A prominent provincial politician, Gowan was born in County Wexford, Ireland. He came to Upper Canada in 1829 and immediately immersed himself in political affairs. Drawing upon his experience in the Irish Orange Order, Gowan established the Grand Orange Lodge of British North America in 1830 and , as the first Canadian grand master, ably guided the organization during its formative years. In 1836 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly, representing this area intermittently until 1861. A shrewd strategist and an effective orator, he gradually broadened his influence, using his newspaper, the “Brockville Statesman,” to promote his political views. Following his retirement from provincial politics, Gowan continued to work for the retention of strong ties with Britain, a cause he had upheld throughout his career.

In 1808 the provincial government authorized the erection of a court house and gaol in Elizabethtown (Brockville) to serve the District of Johnstown created ten years earlier. By 1811 a brick structure had been built here on land donated by William Buell, the founder of Brockville. It was replaced in 1824 by a larger building which remained the judicial and administrative centre of the region until the present court house was completed in 1843. Prominently situated at the head of the public green, this imposing Neo-classical structure was designed by the noted Toronto architect John George Howard and constructed by Benjamin Chaffey, a local contractor. Subsequently enlarged and renovated, it retains the arrangement of prison and court facilites so effectively integrated in the original plan.

The village garrisoned by a company of Leeds Militia who, taken by surprise, could offer no resistance. The invaders released prisoners from the jail, took a quantity of arms, horses and cattle, and carried off an number of residents. Civil War Robbery In this building is the Farmers Bank vault, which was robbed of $60,000 as "Morgan's Raiders" were on their last raid through Kentucky. Late the night of June 8, 1864, several of Morgan's men went to the house of J. O. Miller, cashier, and took the vault key from him. The money was never recovered. It was believed it went to Confederate cause. See over.

Bank Sues In 1866, a civil suit was filed in Anderson Co. by Farmers Bank against Lt. J. F. Witherspoon. The bank was awarded a judgment of $59,057.33 for damages. On appeal, Witherspoon found not liable. Court of Appeals said that under laws of war, robbery was not unlawful. Furthermore, there was no proof Witherspoon more guilty than any other in Morgan's command. Over.

William Buell’s 1816 Map of Brockville

This is one of the earliest maps of the Village of Brockville and shows many of the early details upon which the later Town, and then City of Brockville have been superimposed.

The war of 1812-15 has just been over for a short time. The area around the first Court House shows the wartime accommodations for soldiers, with barracks, cook house, and hospital still in place.

The waterfront shows the original shoreline characterized by “Oak Point” on the left, a natural landmark known by Indians and French voyageurs. Here, where we stand, is the small bay and beach where landings were common. This is the origin of the first name of the settlement, “Buell’s Bay.”

William Buell (1751-1832), a disbanded Ensign in the Loyalist regiment, the “King’s Rangers,” arrived here in 1785, and took up his Crown Grant of land. He took advantage of the situation and developed his land into a town site for the settlers who arrive in subsequent years.

From this location northward runs the present Apple Street, which was opened through the middle of Buell’s early apple orchard.

Plan of the Village of Brockville being part of the property of William Buell, Esq. Situated in front of a part of his lands, and laid out in lots according to this plan into Town Lots, of which the following have been disposed of prior to the delineation of this plan, and marked with the initials of the purchasers names. Those unmarked are the property of William Buell Esq., The whole accurately laid down by a scale of 100 feet to the 1/2 inch, taken from actual survey by Andrew N. Buell. — Brockville, September 25th 1816.

Williamsville School No.9

New York, Erie County, Amherst
Williamsville School #9, originally located at New and Smith Roads, served farm families living in the northeastern part of Amherst. I was used as a school until the early 1950s. As many as 36 students, ranging in age from 4-18, attended it at any one time.

This schoolhouse has been restored as closely as possible to its appearence between 1880-1890. It is an excellent example of late 19th-century vernacular schoolhouse architecture with bonneted windows in the Italianate style. The rondel over the entrance door identifies the school and its construction date. The interior south wall and the teacher's platform have been rebuilt, and the original floorong has bee exposed and repaired. The original exterior and interior paint colors have ben replicated.

The desks were all two-seaters similar to the pair of desks on the front of the room. You can still see the marks on the floor where the original desks were anchored. The single-seat desks now being used, while not original to this building, are from the same time period.

The stove has been placed where charred floor planking indicated its original location. Older boys were responsible for bringing in wood and keeping the fire burning. In winter, the stove was also used to heat lunches or dry wet mittens.

In 1885, Grover Cleveland was president of the United States. His portrait hangs on the wall in this school to indicate the pride that area residents may have felt in having someone from Erie County in the White House.

The typical school day lasted from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. At Noon, the students ate ouside during good weather. AFter lunch they helped with school chores or played games. According to oral histories, children attending this school sometimes played "flood", a tag type of game they made up because the ground around the school was often wet or flooded due to its proximity to Ransom Creek.

It was not until after 1900, when increased immigration led to a heightened interest in Americanization, that schools commonly had the American flag inside. The flag on this flagpole has 38 stars, as there were only 38 states in 1880.

Willamsville School #9 was closed in 1951. In 1953, the building was sold to Alfred Jurek Post #1672 and was utilized as a youth center. Ransom Oaks Development purchased the land in 1971 and donated the building to Amherst Museum prior to the cinstruction of the houses and townhouses which now stand at the site.

The most unusual of Kentucky's covered bridges is the Sherburne "suspension" bridge, built 1867-68 at a cost of $3,500. In the early days a stagecoach route from Mt. Sterling to Maysville crossed the bridge, then privately owned. This bridge is 266 ft. long and has a single roadway 14 ft. wide. The heavy steel suspension cables and reinforcing timbers added in 1951.
