Byera Tunnel

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Charlotte, Byera
Before you lies one of two manmade tunnels within this ridge called Jasper Rock. This 200-foot tunnel was built using slave labour in 1813. It allowed the Europeans access by land to areas north of this tunnel. Prior to the cutting of Byera tunnel, goods from plantations further north were transported to Kingstown using canoes and droghers (small sea crafts).

The Treaty of Paris between the French and British in 1763 gave the British ownership of St. Vincent. Thus, although lands further north were previously reserved for the Caribs, by 1796, most of the Carib inhabitants were forced into exile off St. Vincent.

Settlement of the Carib Reserve by the Europeans thereafter began around 1804. Several sugar estates including Grand Sable, Rabacca, Lot 14 and Orange Hill were later established.

Byera tunnel was reinforced and repaired in 2004 using steel and concrete. The second tunnel, Black Point, is located at the end of the ridge near the sea.

The Ohiowa Auditorium, completed in 1940 and preserved in near original condition, is one of several Nebraska buildings constructed by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. The WPA, a federal government relief program, provided employment for local workers. During World War II the auditorium served as an entertainment center for soldiers from the nearby Bruning Army Air Field. A community landmark, the auditorium has also been used for dances, movies, roller-skating, craft shows, auctions, and as a polling place.

Weeping Water Academy

Nebraska, Cass County, Weeping Water
This building was constructed by community effort in 1871 of native limestone as the Congregational Church and served in that capacity until a new brick church was constructed 1887-1890. The nearby stone parsonage, first occupied in 1867, was sold in 1870 to provide funds for the 1871 church.

The old church provided space for the chapel, classrooms, and library for the Weeping Water Academy which was established in 1885, as its founders felt their children could not receive adequate training in the local public schools of the day. An active promoter of the school was the Rev. George Hindley. Due to his efforts, the school became and remained identified with the Congregationalists, although the work was largely nondenominational. Three formal courses of study were offered including classical, scientific and English Normal.

As enrollment increased, other buildings were utilized or constructed with the largest being Hindley Cottage. The school closed in June, 1914, due to decreased enrollment as public schools improved. During its 29 years of existence, the academy had some 220 graduates. In 1917 this building became the "Weeping Water Academy Library" and continues to serve as the public library today.

Residents Built and Destroyed on this Corner

The first permanent structures here were the adobe apartments for the Mission military families.

In 1856, a wooden Wells Fargo Express Office replaced the adobe ruins. Express mail and the telegraph allowed San Juan Bautista a connection with the rest of America.

The two story Mission Hotel replaced the Express Office in 1908. The great accomodations and cafe made the hotel popular.

In 1938 the State Park removed the Hotel, allowing space for a garden and the relocation of the Settler's Cabin.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, St George, Kingstown
Background/History
Fort Charlotte, once a formidable complex of batteries, barracks, moat, powder, magazines, drawbridge and outworks, was built with Herculean effort 636 feet above the sea upon Berkshire Hill during the closing years of the eighteenth and early years of the nineteenth centuries. The Fort was completed in 1806, and was the chief defence of the island.

The Fort was started soon after St. Vincent and the Grenadines was ceded to the British in 1763. Fort Charlotte was named after Queen Charlottle [sic] the wife of King George III of England.

The Fort was the headquarters of the resident garrison, and became the largest Fort on the island. It's armament included thirty-four cannons, four, six and twelve pounders and the rampart, eleven, thirty-two pounders and two mortars.

An interesting feature of the Fort is the position of cannons placed pointing inland; they were positioned for defence against inland attack from the Caribs and French.

Fort Charlotte remains an historic landmark of national significance and tourism importance.

The Fallen Monarch

California, Tulare County, Kings Canyon National Park

(Left side)
One wonders how long this tree fell...A high tanning content makes Giant Sequoia wood undigestible to fungi, bacteria, insects, and other decay organisms. Thus, decay of this wood takes place very slowly! The Fallen Monarch has remained unchanged for well over 100 years, and who knows how much longer! Ponder this...Was the tree hollowed by fire before or after it fell? What numbers will ponder its role in this forest...providing food, footing and fertility as well as shelter for millions of smaller, less durable life forms.

(Right side)
Bears and other creatures have most likely used the Fallen Monarch for shelter. Undoubtedly, the Indians that came to the high country in the summertime used the hollow trees. Homesteaders Thomas and Isreal Gamlin used the log as a house and a saloon to serve visitors to the area. Also, the U.S. Cavalry used the tree as a stable for their horses. Every day visitors to the Big Trees were served meals and liquid refreshment here.

(Inscription)
After the grove was set aside as General Grant National Park in 1890, the log was used for a while as an employee camp.

English:
The Lachine Canal, built between 1821 and 1825 and enlarged in the 1840s and 1870s, was the first in a network of canals on the St. Lawrence River that linked the Atlantic to the Great Lakes. A symbol of the modernization of transportation, the canal played a decisive role in Montréal’s industrial and commercial development, notably as a source of hydraulic power, The highly diversified character of the canal’s shore area, which became one of the country’s foremost manufacturing centres, reflects the various stages in Canada’s industrialization.
