Wilcox Building

This building of hand hewn beam logs cut from Volcan Mtn. was a general store, post office, a stage coach stop, and telephone exchange, owned by story telling Horace F. Wilcox, president of the “Hot Stove Society” - a gathering of men who spun yarns and solved world problems, retiring in 1891, he sold the business to M. Jacoby & Fred R. Sawday who advertised “first class goods at reasonable prices and square dealing with politeness thrown in.” F.L. Blanc minister, carpenter & lumberman ran a mercantile store here from 1907 – 1920.

Honoring Black Pioneers of Julian

33 of the 55 black residents listed in the 1880 U.S. Census for San Diego County, lived in the Julian area. First to find gold was Fred Coleman in 1869. A creek, mining camp and a toll road bear his name. Albert Robinson and wife Margaret founded the Hotel Robinson, now the Julian Hotel. America Newton, a laundress, owned 80 AC. adjacent to the grade that bears her name. The four black pioneers buried in the Julian Cemetery are Albert Robinson, America Newton, Susan Tull – Margaret's mother and Margaret's daughter, Martha Boyd.

Theophile Verlaque House

This house, built by French immigrant Theophile Verlaque in 1886, was the first permanent residence in the community of Nuevo, later known as Ramona. It is one of the oldest and best preserved buildings in the San Diego backcountry and is closely associated with a noted Ramona pioneer family. The Verlaque House remains a rare example of an adobe French Colonial style residence in the Western United States. It stands as a monument to the vision and character of the pioneer settlers of San Diego County.

Wheelbarrow Odometer Survey of 1894

From May 5th to December 29, 1894, Porter Perrin Wheaton, a civil and mining engineer, measured 2328 miles of county roads. His wheelbarrow with odometer, clinometer, and compass made the survey unique. From this data was prepared the first coordinated surveyor's map of San Diego County, completed in 1900.

This small Spanish Eclectic structure was the northernmost residence in the village of Palm Springs when it was built in the 1920s. As the city grew, there was an increasing need for community services, especially along "Main Street," and Dr. Smith converted the residence to a medical office in the early 1930s. Dr. Peppers occupied this building from 1940 to 1958. This structure continues to be used as downtown office space, with a change from medical to real estate use in 1972.

The Plaza Theatre opened in December 1936 with a screening of "Camille", a tragic love story starring Robert Taylor and Greta Garbo; actor Ralph Bellamy served as master of ceremonies for this event which attracted about 40 Hollywood celebrities. The Theatre was also home for some of the Jack Benny radio broadcasts in the 1940s, along with those of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. The "Village Insanities" revue, a highlight of the Desert Circus of the 1930s and onward, was also staged here.

Where mail was delivered, horses changed and passengers given rest and a meal. First stage carrying overland mail left Tipton, Missouri on Sept. 15, 1858 and, passing through Temescal arrived in Los Angeles onOct. 7, 1858.

First dedicated by the History and Landmarks Committee, Corona Woman's Improvement Club, May 24, 1934 at the site of the Stage Station along Temescal Canyon Road. Rededicated Oct. 7, 2006 by the Corona Woman's Improvement Club.

This house was constructed in 1834 by Thomas Oliver Larkin, the only United States Consul in California under Mexican rule, it has been used as a private residence, the United States Consulate, City Hall, and served as Headquarters of General Stephen W. Kearny and Colonel Richard B. Mason, United States Military Governors of California in 1846-1847. Donated in 1957 to the State of California by Alice Larkin Toulmin.
