Fairmont Army Air Field

Nebraska, Fillmore County, Fairmont
Construction began on the Fairmont Army Air Field September 17, 1942. Located east of here, it was one of eleven built in Nebraska during World War II.

The 1,980-acre field began as a satellite of the Topeka Army Air Base. Early in 1943 the name was changed to Fairmont Army Air Field. A short-lived training school gave way to the 451st Bombardment Group, which arrived in September 1943. Other groups were the 485th, 504th, 16th, 98th, 467th and 489th. Hangers of various sizes housed B-24s, B-17s, and B-29s. Extensive concrete runways and other structures were built. The field had barracks for nearly 6,000 officers and enlisted men. Its 350-bed hospital was the largest in Nebraska.

In September 1944 Lt. Col. Paul Tibbets visited Fairmont and selected the 393rd Bomb Squadron of the 504th to join the 509th Composite Group at Wendover Field, Utah. This group dropped both atomic bombs on Japan.

The field was declared surplus in the spring of 1946.

Alabama, Montgomery County, Montgomery

Old Elam Baptist Church Cemetery is Montgomery County's 22nd cemetery listed in the prestigious Alabama Historic Cemetery Register. Rev. James McLemore, Electious Thompson, Arnold Edwards, and E. Jeter founded Old Elam Baptist Church on June 19, 1819. Although founded by a white congregation, for its first 46 years the church and cemetery were integrated. In 1865, the deed for the church and 10 acres including the cemetery were passed to the church's African American members.
The oldest graves date back to June 17, 1820. One grave belongs to a person born in South Africa in 1817 who was brought to America as a slave in 1823 and remained here until her death. The cemetery is diversified and holds the earthly remains for early settlers, slaves, sharecroppers, American and Confederate soldiers, educators, preachers, and successful businessmen and women. This cemetery provides powerful insights about the diligence and commitment of our ancestors. The Alabama Historical Commission listed this cemetery in the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register on March 19, 2013.

Alabama, Autauga County, near Prattville

This cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Autauga County having been established as a burial ground by at least 1841. The land was officially set aside as a burial ground when the county seat was in this area from 1834 to 1868. The area was first know as Kingston and was later renamed Old Kingston. Buried here is Mr. W.N. Thompson who was born in Wilshire, England in 1791 and died in 1851 and also served as the first circuit clerk of Autauga County when the county seat was located in Kingston. Also buried here are Native Americans, slaves, whites, African Americans, a sheriff, teachers, and soldiers from the following U.S. wars: War of 1812, Civil War, WWI & II, Korean War and Vietnam War. In December 2005, the Old Kingston Historical Cemetery Committee, a not-for-profit group, initiated a cemetery restoration project. This cemetery was placed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register on November 12, 2008.

The Bronnenberg Family

Indiana, Madison County, Anderson
The Bronnenbergs represent true pioneer spirit and a preservationist ethic.

Frederick Brandenburg was born in 1775 in Germany. As a youth he apprenticed as a tanner. Brandenburg immigrated to America as a young man, changing his name to Bronnenberg. He established a tanning business in Pennsylvania where he met and married Barbara Easter in 1806. The Bronnenbergs lived in Virginia and Ohio before reaching Indiana in 1819 with eight children.

A daughter's illness and death led them to postpone their westward journey to Illinois and stop in Indiana. A nearby abandoned fur trapper's cabin became their temporary home.

Frederick Jr. stayed on his father's farm until the mid-1800s when he built this brick home. Tulip poplars from nearby woodlands provided the timbers. Limestone for the foundation was quarried near the White River. Bricks made from local clay were fired at the site. Cedar trees provided the wood for making roof shingles.

The Bronnenbergs stayed at the Mounds, expanding their farm, tannery and mill. A log cabin located on the bend of the White River was constructed. The family expanded as well with the addition of four more children.

The Bronnenberg Family recognized their responsibility to preserve the mounds. They guarded the mounds against artifact hunters. As the result of their vigilance, the mounds remain among the best examples in the state.

"To write the pioneer life of Madison County, Indiana, without mentioning the Bronnenbergs would be like visiting Massachusetts without seeing Boston." Samuel Hardin

Goshen Quaker Cemetery

Ohio, Logan County, near Zanesfield
This cemetery was established in the early 1800's as a final resting place for early Quaker pioneer families such as the Martin, Robert and Samuel Marmon and their sister, Kesiah Marmon-Outland families who migrated to Ohio from Northampton, North Carolina starting in 1806. Many other Quaker families followed these brave pioneers, (Outlands, Reames, Watkins, and more), to start a new life, spread their faith and to escape persecution being suffered in the southern states for nonsupport of slavery. The result of this coming together in faith was the Goshen Friends Church in 1807. This relocation to the Ohio territory later helped these families and their descendants to become quiet helpers in the Underground Railroad system. In addition to many brave pioneers and their descendants, 1 Revolutionary War Veteran, 3 War of 1812 veterans and 12 Civil War veterans are contained within its borders. It is also the resting place of Evangeline Reames, founder of the Ohio Friends Home in 1905.

As the early Quakers believe ornate tombstones were ostentatious, many graves were left unmarked or marked only with simple field stones. Later tombstones were simple in design. Some of the more ornate and larger stones of the upper portion of the upper portion of the cemetery are descendant purchased replacement stones for original monuments that were destroyed or lost over time. This cemetery was restored in 2007 as part of the 200 year Anniversary of the Goshen Friends Church by the Girl Scouts of Appleseed Ridge, Junior Troop 553, of East Liberty. All recovered stones were reset and Memorial Marker placed for individuals who were historically listed as being interred in the cemetery but for whom no stone could be found.

For more information on the cemetery, please visit the local library, historical society or inquire at the Church office.

Earl Sloan's accumulation of a fortune from the formulation and sale of "Sloan's Liniment" resulted in the creation of a living legacy. To "honor the place of his nativity" Dr. Earl Sloan donated funds to build the Sloan Library for the people of Zanesfield. With a wish to teach boys and girls "trades, mechanical and domestic science," he also provided for the establishment of the Sloan Industrial School. Dr. Sloan's vision for the future continues to aid and inspire young people today as they benefit from educational opportunities made possible through his generosity.

Ramona Town Hall

California, San Diego County, Ramona
Dedicated on Washington's birthday, February 22, 1894, this building was given to the townspeople of Nuevo (as Ramona was then known) by a rancher and financier Augustus Barnett and his wife Martha. Feeling that the local schoolhouse was not a proper place to hold dances and other social events, Barnett donated $17,000 in gold coin to erect a building that could serve as the social center for the community as well as host a library.

Romona Town Hall was designed by noted San Diego architect William S. Hebbard. Built of adobe with brick veneer in the Romanesque / Mission Revival style, it is considered one of the largest freestanding adobe structures in the southwest.

The building was erected by T.O. Samuels on two lots donated by real estate developer and surveyor Milton Santee. Santee soon thereafter successfully lobbied to town to change its name to Ramona in order to capitalize upon the popularity of Helen Hunt Jackson's literary character of the same name.

During its long history, this building has served the community as home to the towns library, movie theater, high school, bank, dance hall, justice court, and annual turkey day celebration. Numerous organizations – including the chamber of commerce, Masonic Lodge, volunteer fire department and Red Cross – first assembled here.
