Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church

Founded on ground purchased by Richard Allen in 1791, this congregation is the mother church of the African Methodist denomination. The present structure, erected in 1889, replaces three earlier churches on this site.

First in the nation. Built 1806 by Thomas Sparks and John Bishop to make hunting shot & symbolized a new U.S. industrial independence. Bishop, a Quaker, sold his share when ammunition was made here for the War of 1812. The Sparks family stayed in control until 1903.

Washington Avenue Immigration Station

This road, formerly an Indian trail which paralleled the coast, was used by the Spanish and the British. In 1778 it was traveled by the Revolutionary soldiers who marched against Fort Tonyn at Point Peter. Albert Gallatin while U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in 1805 recommended the Old St. Marys Road, a portion of the Post Road, as one of seven principal routes that were important to U.S. defense and postal service.

The first company in North America to successfully manufacture an artificial fiber (rayon). Plant employees, many of whom were women, lived in Viscose Village, a planned community built in 1912-1915 designed by Ballinger & Perrot of Phila. in the English Domestic Revival style. The Marcus Hook plant contributed significantly to the country's defense in both World Wars--supplying fiber for many military applications.
