One of Tennessee's earliest settlements. The valley you see was a warpath for the Cherokees, led Daniel Boone to Cumberland Gap and was traveled by Davy Crockett. Across Highway 11W to the right stood Bean Fort, built by William Bean, first permanent white settler in Tennessee. In front of the fort stood Bean Station Tavern, the largest tavern between Washington, D.C. and New Orleans. It housed Presidents Polk, Johnson and Jackson. The cabin is similar to the cabin at Rohn the eighth checkpoint on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Nestled along the north side of the Alaska Range at the confluence of the Tatina and the South Fork of the Kuskokwim Rivers. The original Rohn cabin was built in 1910 as a roadhouse which served the interior gold mining communities of Iditarod, Flat, Ophir, and others. Earthquakes and fires destroyed the original cabin. The present cabin was built in 1929. The cabin and nearby airstrip have been maintained and used as an emergency shelter and landing strip as well as serving as a checkpoint during the Iditarod Race.

Joe Redington, Sr.
Born in Oklahoma, February 1, 1917 • Died in Alaska, June 24, 1999

Joe was an accomplished man; homesteader, big- game guide. bush pilot, commercial fisherman, boat builder, fish- plant manager, and mountain climber. But most of all, he was a man who loved dogs and dog mushing.

After service in the Army during World War II, Joe came to Alaska in 1948 to homestead. Here he established Knik Kennels. Until 1966, he and his dog teams performed search-and-rescue and reclamation work for the Army. In, 1979, Joe mushed a dog team to the summit of Mt McKinley and showed the world what dogs could do.

Joe’s interest in the old mail route known as the Iditarod Trail led to its declaration as a National Historic Trail. he was the driving force behind the creation of the first Iditarod Trail sled dog Race in 1973 and fought to keep the event alive through its most difficult years. Thanks to his tenacity, the Iditarod has evolved into a thriving, world-renowned event that continues to this day. He will always be remembered as the Father of the Iditarod.

Saunders County

Nebraska, Saunders County, Wahoo
Saunders County was originally Oto Indian territory, and a large earthlodge village under Chief Itan was located here during the early historic period. Later, the Pawnee established villages in the area and in 1855 held peace conferences with General John M. Thayer.

The Ox-Bow Trail, the primary route from Nebraska City to Fort Kearny in 1845-1859, passed through this area. Pioneers first settled here in 1856 and 1857. The county's organization was approved in 1867 and the county seat located at Ashland. Wahoo was surveyed three years later and became the county seat in 1873. The origin of the name "Wahoo" is uncertain, but it is probably derived from an Oto word.

In 1883 Swedish settlers in Wahoo established a school which eventually became Luther Junior College. When Luther merged with Midland College in Fremont, the Wahoo campus was sold. In 1965 it became the site of John F. Kennedy College.

Among Wahoo's prominent native sons are artist Clarence W. Anderson, geneticist and Nobel Prize winner George Beadle, baseball player "Wahoo Sam" Crawford, composer Howard Hanson and motion picture producer Darryl F. Zanuck.

In memory of all submarines and crews on eternal patrol.
Honoring all U.S. Navy Submarine Sailors.

In memory of the USS Wahoo SS238 and her gallant crew who sank 20 Japanese ships before being sunk by action on October 11, 1943.

During WWII the U.S. Submarine Force suffered the highest loss rate of the U.S. Armed Forces. Of the 16,000 officers and enlisted men that served on submarines during the war 3,506 (22%) were lost. Although only 1.6% of the U.S. Navy, the Submarine Force sank 30% of the Japanese Imperial Navy and 60% of the Japanese Merchant Marines, choking off the Japanese economy. This victory came at a heavy price.

The Ox-Bow Trail

Nebraska, Saunders County, Ashland
This marker sits astride the Ox-Bow Trail, also known as the Old Fort Kearny or Nebraska City Road. Beginning in the 1840's, this route carried thousands of emigrants and millions of pounds of freight destined for the settlements, mining camps, or military posts of the West. Many travelers were Mormons bound for the Great Salt Lake Valley. The trail, looping north to the Platte from such Missouri River towns as Plattsmouth and Nebraska City, resembled an Ox-Bow, after which it was named. Just west of here was an important ford across Salt Creek, where limestone ledges form a natural low-water bridge. Travel over the trail declined in the mid-1860's with the development of more direct routes from the Missouri to the Central Platte Valley.

The water supply for the City of Lincoln comes from wells in the Platte Valley near here. In 1932 this pumping station was built, and a 36-inch water main laid to Lincoln. A treatment plant and an additional 48-inch main were added in the 1950's.
