Completed in 1847, this neo-classical building was designed and built by local architect Isaac Smith to accommodate the provincial legislature and administrative offices. It also housed the Island's Supreme Court until 1872. Province House retains its central role in Island public life, with the Assembly holding sessions here. In September 1864 it was the scene of the first conference on colonial union. Delegates from the colonies of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Canada met in the legislative council chamber, now the Confederation Chamber, to begin discussions which led to confederation in 1867.

The Turkey Point Lighthouse stands proudly on a 100-foot bluff looking south over the Chesapeake Bay. Built in 1833, the lighthouse pointed the way to safe waters for nearly 175 years. It played a vital part in protecting the lives and livelihoods of many thousands of people. The light was taken out of service in April, 2000. Today, visitors can walk the 40 steps to the top of the lighthouse and experience a moment that started nearly two centuries ago. From the top of the lighthouse-135 feet above the waters of the Bay, you can see for miles.

From Bulls (or Bull) Mountain, American militia had a commanding view of Elk Neck peninsula. The observed the Upper Chesapeake Bay and North East River to the north and west, and Elk River to the south and east.

As enemy ships approached on April 28, 1813, the Americans relayed news to military posts situated from here to Elkton.

“Early in the spring (of 1813) they established a camp of observation on the summit of Bulls Mountain, and stationed a company of cavalry there to watch the enemy and give notice of their approach”...
History of Cecil County, George Johnston, 1881.

Field Communications
Before radio and telegraph, signal systems and messengers on horseback relayed information. Flags in daytime and lanterns at night sometimes displayed coded messages. On Elk Neck peninsula, cavalry carried news from station to station.

Spirited Rebuff

Maryland, Cecil County, Elkton
The British took their terror campaign to the Elk River in April 1813. Their target—Elkton—was protected by several forts.

After capturing a gun battery at Frenchtown, British raiders destroyed its storehouses, a fishery, and military supplies. However, spirited firing from forts Defiance and Frederick located near here halted the enemy’s advance.

Clever Defense
A strong chain stretched across the river to deter enemy vessels. The far end was firmly fastened to a post on the opposite shore. A windlass at Fort Frederick could raise the chain when needed to block passage.

“On the 29th day of April, 1813,…a considerable British force distributed into thirteen barges, commenced a hostile attack on a landing called Frenchtown…”
—Annapolis Maryland Republican, November 20, 1813.

The Great House

Maryland, Saint Marys County, Leonardtown
On this site, lot 39, as designated of a plat of Leonardtown c. 1728, was constructed the “Great House” of John Stewart. Built c. 1734, the structure stood until 1960 and over the years served many purposes being referenced at various periods as the “Great House”, “Thompson's Inn”, “The Tavern Lot”, “The Old Tavern Lot”, “Clarke's Hotel” and the “Beacon Building”.

During its 225 years the Great House provided offices for county agencies, local businesses and professionals while serving as a boarding house, hotel, tavern, billiard room, stage depot, and private residence.

In 1802 the Georgetown and Port Tobacco mail stage was extended to Thompson's Inn at Leonardtown. James Thompson Jr. proprietor was father of 8 sons, four who fought the British during the War of 1812 and thus became known to posterity as the “Fighting Thompsons'.”

In 1818 then tavern proprietor, Philip Greenwell, for the yearly rent of one bottle of Madeira wine to Henry G.S. Key, enjoyed the use of a 15 foot strip of land running along and parallel with said lot, to wit a sidewalk.

The Leonardtown Herald and subsequently the Saint Mary's Beacon were published from this location from 1839 until the demise of the building in 1960. From 1855 through 1952 three generations of the King family, John Franklin, Francis Vernon and Aloysius Fenwick lived and ran the paper from this location.

On April 25, 1905 the Leonardtown telephone exchange, located in the “Beacon Building” opened with 25 phones on the line.

In September 2 1911, after inspecting the new road from Mechanicsville to Leonardtown, Governor Crothers posed for a photograph in front of the Beacon building with a team of oxen symbolizing the passing of the ox team in St. Mary's as an essential element of transportation.

St.Mary;s County Health Department was located on the second floor of the Beacon Building from 1934 to 1953.

The two English yew trees located on this lot were located in the front yard of the structure and are thought to have been brought from England and planted during the Colonial period.
