Site of Thornton's Store

Texas, Taylor County, Abilene
Known throughout West Texas as “a city within itself,” Thornton’s Store was one of Abilene’s leading businesses for nearly seven decades. E.L. Thornton (1896-1964) moved to Abilene from Arkansas in 1919, after service in World War I. He opened a fruit stand in 1919, followed by a grocery store in 1920. Joined by his two brothers, Thornton soon expanded his business. In 1925 he added dry goods, followed by a drug store and a feed store in 1929. Radio and refrigeration departments were added in 1931.
By 1937 Thornton’s filled an entire block of Oak Street, adding a café, a beauty shop, and shoe department. In 1941 a franchise for selling new Studebaker cars was added. The one-story properties were renovated in 1947 into a four-story structure of more than 100,000 square feet. Thornton’s was famous for its Christmas displays. In 1959 the largest fire in Abilene’s gutted the Thornton property. Reconstruction began at once.
After the deaths of E.L. Thornton in 1964 and his son Charles Eugene Thornton in 1965, surviving family members sold their interests to a chain store based in St. Louis. Thornton’s continued in business under new ownership until 1985.

King and Queen Seat

Maryland, Harford County, near Jarrettsville
The King and Queen Seat to your right is a natural 190-foot rock outcrop that overlooks Deer Creek Valley. This cliff towers directly above Deer Creek and affords a spectacular view of the rolling hills and farmland of Harford County

During the 17th Century, the Susquehannock Native Americans who lived in three settlements along Deer Creek used the King and Queen Seat at the Rocks as the site of ceremonial gatherings. Bald Eagle, chief rule of the Tribes, and his wife, took their places on the King and Queen Seat and the Braves gathered on the rocks and ground below to listen to orators. According to Legend, Bald Eagle and his wife occupied these seats as they witnessed the marriage of their son, Bird-That-Flies-High and the beautiful Iroquois maiden, Fern-Shaken-By-The-Wind.

In recent times, the King and Queen Seat was the filming site of the popular family movie Tuck Everlasting, directed by Jay Russell (2002), staring Alexis Bledel, William Hurt and Sissy Spacek.

The Perry House - Basin Park Hotel

Arkansas, Carroll County, Eureka Springs

1884 - Cutter's Guide
The Eureka Springs of Arkansas

The hotels and boarding houses of Eureka Springs are numerous. The Perry House is the only real first-class hotel in the city; and we say this with no disparagement of the Southern, Hancock, Harper or other houses that would be the first-class houses but for the Perry House.

The Perry House 1881-1890
This first-class hotel was built around two-years ago, by Mr. Joseph Perry, of Colorado, a gentleman who has built more good hotels on the line of the railroads in Kansas City and Colorado. Mr. Perry came to Eureka Springs as an invalid and considered incurable, but he was so quickly and perfectly cured of his sufferings that he felt grateful enough to build a fine hotel. He has not only built a fine house, but [h]as furnished it throughout in the best manner, and keeps it in first-class style in every particular.

The 1905 Basin Park Hotel - A Hotel For A Day Or A Year
The Basin Park Hotel ranks among the largest and most modern resort hotels in the country, a fire-proof structure, built at a cost of $150,000.

The hotel occupies a central position at the resort, adjoining the famous Basin Spring. From every floor bridges reach to the mountain, conveniently leading to pleasant walks, also affording guests a feeling of great security in case of fire. The Basin Park is equipped with all modern conveniences, including fine electric elevator with every known safety appliance, electric lights, hot and cold water in every room, one hundred bed-rooms, fifty with private bath, telephone in each guestrooom and guest's bath-room on every floor. The dining-room will seat two hundred persons. Lobby, office, barber-shop and drugstore on the ground floor. The seventh floor is devoted to ball-room, sun parlor, reception, grill and billiards room. -1907 hotel brochure.

A Hotel For The 21st Century
Marty and Elize Roenick purchased the Basin Park Hotel on February 28, 1997 with plans of construction of a semi-retirement home on the hotel top floors. Although the loft style home was never built, the Roenicks have been responsible for the preservation and restoration of the Basin Park and Crescent Hotels, doing their part in protecting the irreplaceable. -2002 gubernatorial proclamation

Arkansas, Carroll County, Eureka Springs

Festus Orestes Butt was born in 1875 in Illinois just before his family moved to Carroll County, Arkansas. He became a licensed attorney before he was of legal age. The Arkansas General Assembly set aside his "disability of minority", and he set up a practice in Eureka Springs in 1894. Elected to the legislature, Butt served four years, then two successive terms in the state senate before 1910. He was elected mayor of Eureka Springs in 1911, 1916 and 1920. During a second term in the Assembly, Butt enacted special legislation in 1913 that gave Eureka Springs perpetual first class city status, regardless of population. Beloved for his oratory, wisdom and service to community, F. O. Butt practiced his profession on these premises until his death in 1972.

Chandler Mall Buildings

Richard H. James and Charles S. Beck built the three story brick and limestone Beck and James Building in the year 1888 to house a clothing and apparel store.

F. H. and Avarilla James and their family resided in the upper rooms and C. S. Beck was a boarder in their household. He was a practitioner of the art of “magnetic healing.”

Zadock P. Freeman, well known civic leader and mayor, built the Freeman Block, another brick and limestone structure, in which F.A. Pickard operated a hardware and furniture store.

The substantial three story buildings were constricted two years before the level of Main Street was raised and widened with the result that their lower floors were enclosed by high stone retaining walls.

About five years earlier, R. H. James constructed a large wooden building with a fine hardwood floor beside Main Street adjacent to the future site of the Beck and James Building. He operated a “skating rink” where visitors skated on wheels to music. Roller skating was one of the most popular year round sports in America in the Victorian Era.

This building was damaged or destroyed by the Great Fire of 1888 and James rebuilt a portion of it as an opera house. Theatrical stock companies and road shows then touring the country gave performances throughout the year in the beautifully appointed theater. It was originally lighted with coal gas lamps, and replaced in 1899 with 200 electric lights and footlights for the stage. Local recitals, musicales, and political rallies were held at the opera house as well.

Changing times brought new interests. In 1917 Mary Arnheiter, Mary Lou Evans and Alma H. J. Hubbell adapted the opera house to show motion pictures and opened "The Queens Photoplay House". In 1923 the building was used as the Pentecostal Mission meeting house.

By the Great Depression in the 1930's many large wood buildings were no longer in use and owners found that there was a market for salvaged lumber in surrounding communities. It is believed the opera house was among buildings razed in that era. The site is now a parking lot.

In 1930, Edgar J. Chandler operated a grocery store in the Beck and James Building and his wife, Ida, sold ladies ready-to-wear in the Freeman Block. In 1952, the Clark brothers, Norman and Roland, established the town’s first modern supermarket on the premises. In 1977, an entire block of buildings from the Basin Bath House to the Auditorium were sold to John Fuller Cross by the current supermarket owners. Thus began a massive restoration project of these buildings which included removal of a false front and aluminum veneer. Restoration was completed in time for the 1979 Eureka Springs Centennial.

War in the Chesapeake

Maryland, Baltimore City, Baltimore
During the War of 1812 the young United States was embroiled in conflict with Great Britain. From 1812 to 1815 Americans fought to protect their rights and economic independence. They faced superior enemy forces on the homefront and the high seas. The strategically important Chesapeake Bay region felt the brunt of the war, choked by shipping blockades and ravaged by enemy raids. The events in this region were crucial to the outcome of the war. Though there was no clear victor at the end of the war, the United States protected its democracy and emerged with heightened stature on the world stage. Explore this pivotal time in American history along the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail.

“Baltimore must be tamed…”

Maryland, Baltimore City, Baltimore
Baltimore’s importance as the commercial heart of the Chesapeake region wasn’t the only reason the British wanted to capture the city in 1814. They also wanted to stifle Fell’s Point---the home port for many of the privateers that preyed on British merchant ships. The United States augmented its small navy by licensing privately owned ships to attack enemy vessels. Baltimore privateers captured more than 500 British ships during the War of 1812. Explore Fell’s Point today to see dozens of building that once served as homes and businesses for shipbuilders, seamen, immigrants, enslaved and free blacks, merchants, and families in this bustling maritime neighborhood. Exhibits and tours reveal the role of Fell’s Point in the defense of Baltimore and the nation.

Machine in a Stone Box

Peirce Mill represents the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution in America. For centuries, small water-powered mills had ground grain into flour, using human labor in every step of the process. This 1829 mill, on the other hand, was a mechanized marvel., incorporating the latest labor-saving technologies pioneered by American inventor Oliver Evans. Water turned the wheel, which spun a shaft that drove gears, belts, a grain elevator, and a variety of machines. Assisted by gravity and a single miller, the mills machinery automatically turned grain into flour.

Captain Henry Thompson, Clifton Mansion’s original owner, formed the First Baltimore Horse Artillery unit in 1813. General John Stricker chose Thompson’s troop to report on enemy movements at the August 1814 Battle of Bladensburg.

Selected as General Samuel Smith’s personal guard, the troop was stationed at the defenses on Hampstead Hill during the Battle of Baltimore and served as observers/couriers at North Point and Fort McHenry. Duty and Service-Thompson’s journal shows he persistently drilled his militia cavalry troop. The 62-man unit was made up of leading merchants and tradesmen committed to protecting their homeland.

The narrow land shaped by Bear Creek, Bread and Cheese Creek, and Back River was the site of the Battle of North Point, September 12, 1814. Some 3,200 Americans clashed with 4,500 British to delay the advance on Baltimore.

When Britain threatened Baltimore a year earlier, Bear Creek was considered a potential landing spot. More than 400 militiamen were positioned at Camp Eagleston where Bear Creek joins the Patapsco. Life Line-The British used Bear Creek to provide the army with communication and support. After the battle, many of the wounded were transported in small boats down Bear Creek to troopships anchored at North Point.

“Brigadier General (John) Stricker took a good position at the junction of the two roads leading from this place to North Point, having his right flanked by Bear Creek and his left by a marsh. He here awaited the approach of the Enemy”
Major General Samuel Smith to acting Secretary of War James Monroe, September 19, 1814.

M60 Main Battle Tank

Virginia, Hanover County, near Ashland

The Patton series of tanks are named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during WWII, and one of the first American advocates for the use of tanks in battle.

The M60 Patton battle tank entered active duty in 1960, and was manufactured in the USA by Chrysler Corp as an upgrade from the previous standard, the M48. The M60’s design innovations included better armor protection in the form of a new hull made of a single piece of steel casting, an improved main armament, three support rollers per side instead of five, and lighter weight rugged road wheels made of aluminum instead of steel.

American design ingenuity made the new M60 a tough, efficient battle tank that needed little refueling and servicing. With a fuel capacity of 385 gallons and the power of a Continental V-12 twin turbo-charged diesel engine in its belly, the M60 Patton had a maximum speed of 30MPH, and an increased operational range of over 300 miles. its combat weight was 52 tons, and it was manned by a crew of four men. The M60 Patton (and its various upgrades) served as the U.S. Army’s primary battle tank for about 30 years. It was the basic main battle tank stationed in Europe and South Korea during the Cold War. M60 models remained in service through the 1990s, and over 15,000 were manufactured in all.

Deeded by the US Army to this post for perpetual care, this M-60 Battle Tank was placed on-site 23 June 2007 through the cooperative efforts of VFW post 10657 and the Virginia Military Vehicle Association. The funding was supplied by VFW post 10657, and the mechanical, service, and transportation functions were supplied by the VAMVA.

This tank display represents to all, the power this country has exerted in the cause of freedom in our country and around the world. The tank that won the Cold War.
