As a University of Kansas student in 1905, Phog Allen played basketball for the inventor of the game, Dr. James Naismith. His performance produced three Letters from 1905-1907 and earned him a place on the roster of the K. C. Athletic Club.

His coaching career at the University of Kansas began in 1907 and continued through 1909. When Allen told Dr. Naismith that he wanted to coach, Naismith replied "You do not coach basketball, you play it."

Not only did he fill the coaching position at the University of Kansas but simultaneously coached at Baker University in nearby Baldwin City and at Haskell Indian Institute in Lawrence. After the 1909 season he dropped out of coaching until 1912 when he began coaching at Central Missouri State University. His enviable record of 102 wins versus 7 losses and 7 titles established him as a coach to be revered.

He moved back to the University of Kansas in 1919 to serve as Athletic Director, Football and Basketball Coach and in 1923 he initiated the K.U. Relays. However basketball was his passion. His K.U. teams won 24 conference titles, the NCAA in 1952 and his 1922 and 1923 teams were awarded the National Title by the Helms Foundation. Adolph Frederick Rupp

Kansas, Douglas County, Lawrence

Born in Halstead, Kansas, of German emigrant parents Sept. 2, 1901, he was quite proud that he was a full-blooded German.

Rupp graduated from Halstead High School and then attended the University of Kansas where he played basketball under Coach Phog Allen. Dr. Naismith was also at K.U. at the time.

Rupp told the story that as a child he would sack sawdust into what resembled a basketball and then with a barrel hoop nailed to the side of a barn he learned to shoot baskets. Learning to dribble with that sawdust ball was out of the question.

His first coaching position was in Iowa. Next came Freeport, Illinois as a high school coach and then to the University of Kentucky in 1930. Rupp was proud of his home state of Kansas, but made it very clear that he would spend the rest of his days in Kentucky. One of his high points was to be able to defeat his old coach and alma mater.

He became the coach with the most wins in Dec. 1967 when he won his 772 game, surpassing the record held by his old coach Phog Allen of Kansas. His final record was 875 victories and 190 losses. Rupp's teams gained worldwide recognition. NCAA Champs in 1948, 49, 51 and 1958, his team also won the NIT Championship in 1946, five Sugar Bowl titles and a record 27 SEC Championships since 1949. They have been named National Champions six times by the polls.

During his tenure 25 of his Wildcats were honored 37 times as All Americans and 52 players were honored 91 times as All-SEC performers. 31 players entered the pro ranks.

Listed below are some of Rupp's accomplishments

Most successful basketball coach
He was named National Coach of the Year 4 times
In 1967 he was named Coach of the Century
He was Co-Coach of the 1948 Olympic Team
He produced more Gold Medal winners than any other cage coach
He was named to the Kentucky and Kansas Hall of Fame and to the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1944
He was named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Springfield, Massachusetts in 1959

Adolph Frederick Rupp enjoyed being known as the undisputed Baron of Blue Grass in his role as Coach of the University of Kentucky.

Saint Francis Dam Disaster Memorial

California, Ventura County, Santa Paula
Minutes before midnight on the chilly evening of March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam failed. The dam's 200-foot high concrete wall crumpled and collapsed, sending billions of gallons of raging flood waters down San Francisquito Canyon, about five miles northeast of what is now the city of Santa Clarita. The avalanche of water swept 54 miles down the Santa Clara River to the sea. No one knows the exact death toll but more than 450 people perished in the disaster.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on March 13 an urgent message of imminent disaster reached the night telephone operator in Santa Paula and was relayed to police officers, city officials and then homes in the lower portions of town. Among the many heroes of the flood that evening were two motorcycle officers who rode through the night to warn the sleeping citizens in the low lying areas of Santa Paula that a torrent of water was about to inundate their homes. Their heroic efforts saved countless lives. Their wild ride that night was stopped at 3:05 a.m. when the wall of water swept through Santa Paula on its way to the ocean.

Many stories of heroism and courage emerged in the aftermath of the flood. This monument represents one such act of heroism.

[Front]:
I was that which others did not want to be.
I went where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do.
I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness...should I fail.
I have seen the face of terror; felt the stinging cold of fear; and enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment's love.
I have cried, pained, and hoped...but most of all, I have lived times others would say where best forgotten.
At lease someday I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was...a soldier. George L. Skypeck
