Gaillardin Redoubt
Built originally of logs and subsequently of drywall masonry, this small enclosure surrounded by a breastwork was intended to keep an enemy from taking possession of Gaillardia Mountain, which overlooked Fort Louis and the town. Embrasures in the walls enabled soldiers to fire at attacking enemy. In 1799, it boasted an armament of six cannons.
Breastwork
The low stone walls surrounding Fort Royal are called breastworks. Built as an outer defence perimeter for the fort, they were originally accompanied by a wooden palisade. The upper part of the hill was cleared of trees to enable soldiers to fire at an approaching enemy from the protection of this wall. If the enemy threatened to overrun the breastwork, the soldiers would retreat to the fort.
Glacis
The sloping ground outside the walls of Fort Royal is known as the glacis. Within this area, an enemy attacker was exposed to musket fire from the fort.

Redoute du gaillardin
Construit de rondins à l’origine, puis de maçonnerie, ce petit fortin entouré d’un épaulement devait empêcher l’ennemi de s’emparer du mont Gaillardin, qui dominait le fort Louis et la ville. Épaulement
Les murets de pierres qui entourent le fort Royal s’appellent des épaulements. Édifiés pour servir de périmètre de défense avancée au fort, ils étaient à l’époque épaulés d’une palissade de rondins . Le sommet de la colline était déboisé pour permettre aux soldats de tirer sur les assaillants de derrière ce mur. Si l’ennemi menaçait de prendre l’épaulement, les soldats pouvaient battre un retraite dans le fort.
Glacis
Le talus situé à l’extérieur des murailles du fort Royal était appelé glacis. Dans cette zone, l’assaillant était exposé aux tirs de mousquet du fort.

Modern Ship Propeller

This propeller wheel is typical of those used to drive Lakes freighters. It measures 14 feet 5 inches in diameter and weighs over 11 tons; being made of a special bronze alloy, its value exceeds 10,000 dollars. The propeller was removed from the 520-foot ore-carrier Charles S. Hebard, which was built in 1906 and scrapped 60 years later.

Potsdam Raquette River Walk

The Industrial Center


The inexpensive, reliable power provided by Potsdam's falls attracted industry to Fall Island. Water was diverted from the top of the dams into flour flumes (rectangular wooden conduits.) One flume ran down each side of the island. As water flowed by each factory, some was drawn off to drive turbines that turned the machinery using belt drives. A flume also ran down each bank of the river, providing power to more mills and factories.

By 1820, Fall Island became the industrial center of Potsdam, providing water power to two grist mills, six sawmills, two fulling (cloth processing) mills, two carding (woolen) mills, a brewery, a distillery, and a trip hammer and scythe factory.

Fall Island's industrial heyday lasted until the 1920s. Among its enterprises were:
• Leete Foundry, established in 1820, operated for over a century.
•Batchelder & Sons Furniture, founded as Batchelder & Badlam in 1841, sold furniture, pianos, and cabinetry and provided undertaking services.
•Clarkson Shingle Factory, founded in 1886, also manufactured butter tubs for the North Country's dairy industry.

Potsdam's Logging Heyday

In 1850, Potsdam businessmen led by Henry Hewitt, successfully petitioned the State Legislature to declare the Raquette, upstream from Potsdam, a public highway, overruling objections to log drives.

Within three years, sawmilling increased eight-fold. Sawing technology rapidly evolved from a single blade powered by a waterwheel to gangsaws of many blades powered by turbines that were often combined with a gristmill under the same roof.

During the heyday of logging (1880 to 1910), logs were sometimes cut more that 50 miles away in the watersheds of Tupper Lake and Long Lake. Potsdam industrialists Augustus Sherman and George Sisson owned much of this land.

Bridges

Settlers used a raft ferry located below Fall Island to cross the river from 1803 to 1809. Benjamin Raymond built the first bridge for $100 in 1809. It was made entirely of pine planks and hemlock beams planed at his sawmill, located upstream from this location. Pieces of this old bridge were uncovered in 1924 when the Village built the current east bridge. As technology and materials changed, newer bridges were built of iron, and then finally concrete. The bridge that connects Market Street to Fall Island is the eighth reconstruction of the east bridge built over the Raquette River.

First United Methodist Church of Laurel

Methodists, who organized as a congregation in Laurel in 1840, established the First Church in Laurel in 1842. They occupied two other locations before this edifice was built in 1884. It was enlarged in 1909, 1950, 1962, and 2001. The church lost its original wooden steeple in 1977 due to deterioration. On August 16, 1979, a new steeple was hoisted and continues to serve as a beacon on main street.

Naval Battle of Bay St. Louis

On Dec. 14, 1814, five U.S. gunboats fired on a British fleet entering Lake Borgne. Their action was the last naval defense of the U.S. before the victory of General Andrew Jackson at New Orleans.

From 1793 to the early 1980’s, the departure of sealing ships from St. John’s was an annual event of great social importance. At its peak in the 1850’s, the seal hunt employed 13,600 “swilers” and accounted for as much as one quarter of the value of all Newfoundland exports. / De 1793 au début des années 1980, le départ des bateaux phoquiers était un événement social fort important à Saint-Jean. The seal hunt was, for most of its history, much more than an industry. Float Copper

This piece of float copper was dredged from the Keweenaw Waterway, Michigan, by the hydraulic dredge "New Jersey"; on May 27, 1932, while working under contract with the United States Engineers Office, Duluth. It was presented to the office by the contractor, the Zenith Dredge Company.

Float copper is native metallica copper, almost chemically pure, which has been dislodged and transported by glacial action. This piece weighs 490 pounds and fragments of this size are rare.

Fort Prince George

Fort Prince George, covered by Lake Keowee since 1968, was built nearby in 1753, near the unofficial boundary between Cherokee lands and white settlements. Across the Keowee River from the Cherokee Lower Town of Keowee, it was built to protect whites and Cherokees from the Creeks or other enemies and had been promised to the Cherokee "headmen" by Gov. James Glen since 1748. (Continued on other side) (side 2) (Continued from other side) The fort, a palisaded earthwork with bastions on the corners, was manned by about 25 men. Conflict between its officers and Cherokees helped bring on the Cherokee War of 1760-61. Fort Prince George was abandoned in 1768 as relations between Great Britain and the colonies worsened. Archaeologists excavated the fort site in 1966-68 before Duke Power Company flooded the valley in 1968.

Civil War
About the War: The civil war was fought in 1861-1865 between the United States (the "Union" or the "North") and several southern slave states that declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America (the "Confederacy" or the "South"). The war had its origin in the issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. After four years of bloody combat that left over 600,000 soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and the difficult reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began.

Oneidas in the Civil War
In spite of the oppression many Native Americans suffered, Native American men stood with the United States to fight against slavery. Although the war began in 1861, the Oneidas did not participate until 1863. There were not enough volunteers to fight in the war so President Lincoln allowed a bonus of $300 per person. The Oneidas were not citizens of the United States and could not be drafted. Many non-Oneida men who were drafted offered Oneida men the $300 bonus if the Oneida man took their place. About 1/10th of the Oneida population between the ages of 17 - 45 served in the war. Fathers and sons both enlisted and women were left at home to do the farming.

The Significant Parts of the Wall
Oneida Wampum Belt (Diamond belt shown above)
This belt is the inspiration for the back of the wall. The original wampum belt was made by the Oneidas and each diamond represents one of the 6 nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. On the wall we have 50 diamonds to represent the 50 chiefs of the Iroquois Confederacy.

The Eagle
The eagle is sacred not only to the Oneida, but of all Indian country. The eagle flies the highest of all birds and forever keeps a watchful and protective eye over them. It's a symbol that represents a philosophy of the Oneida which incorporates the sentiment that everything that is said and done today will have impact on the next seven generations.

Modern Ship Anchor

This Navy-style stockless anchor is the type used on all modern ships and, at 3 tons, it is typical of those carried on 8-10,000 ton freighters. A usual rule of thumb provides that a vessel's anchor chain should be three times the depth of the water in which she is anchored: this chain usually weighs about 100 pounds per foot.

Capstan

Deck capstans were used on sailing ships centuries ago to handle anchor lines on the heaviest of the ship's tackle. This cast iron geared capstan was recovered from the sunken schooner Samuel P. Ely at Two Harbors, Minnesota, where the ship sunk in 1896. The big 7-master was built in 1869, salvaged for the museum by Elmer Engman[,] Dave Anderson, John Simenson and Randy Bradford.

McDougall Patent Anchor

Unique apparatus invented by Duluth's Captain Alexander McDougall for use on his whaleback ships. About fifty appear to have been produced at the American Steelbarge Company Shipyard in Superior. This one was recovered in 1977 from the wreck of the Thomas Wilson, sunk in 1902. Salvaged by Robert and Randy Bradford, Al Kennedy, Judy Ferrell, and Elmer Engman.

What was summer like in Door County in the early 1900s? If you were a local girl, you might clean rooms at a family hotel or help with farm chores. Perhaps you would tend to younger siblings. If old enough, you might even work at Camp Meenahga.

Camp Meenahga was located across Shore Road. Camp Meenahga girls spent summer differently than young women of Door County. For eight weeks, at a cost of $350 (1924), campers had a "vacation from fashions and abnormal excitement." They studied dance, wood lore, sewing and "no more than one strenuous" activity, perhaps horseback riding.

Many came from St. Louis. Once here, they enjoyed a daily swim and home-cooked meals. Farms, still located within Peninsula State Park at the time, provided fresh vegetables and milk.

Walk across Shore Road to Skyline Trail and look for signs of Camp Meenahga. Can you see the foundations of the barn-turned-camp lodge? Walk further, watching for a stone fence that the Evenson family likely built when they farmed this site around 1900. Imagine sounds of laughter in the nearby tennis court as carefree girls learned the art of friendly competition.

"In 1916, I conceived the idea of a girls camp," wrote Alice Orr Clark in her journal, "It was certainly up to me to find some work I could do." Mrs. Clark, a single woman from an affluent St. Louis family, established Camp Meenahga with close friend Francis Woodward Mabley.

CCC Legacy

Arizona, Coconino County, Grand Canyon National Park

The nearby plaque commemorates an amazing feat achieved by members of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in the 1930s - construction of a telephone line spanning the entire width of Grand Canyon. One of the poles still stands behind this wall. Beginning in 1934, CCC enrollees worked through winter snow and summer heat to survey and clear a right-of-way roughly following the Bright Angel and North Kaibab trails. Supplied by pack mules, they set 592 galvanized pipe telephone poles and completed stringing the 18 miles (29 km) of copper-weld wire in 1935.

Tucumcari

This area was troubled by both Comanches and Comancheros, New Mexicans who traded illegally with the Indians, until the military campaigns of 1874. With the coming of the railroad in 1898, the small community of Liberty, eight miles to the north, moved here to form the nucleus of Tucumcari, which was incorporated in 1908. The Rock Island-Southern Pacific Depot built in 1927 is an outstanding example of a Mission Revival style depot and recently restored.

In order to find the best route from Arkansas to California, Capt. Randolph B. Marcy led an expedition past here in 1849. The town of Tucumcari was founded in 1901 and takes its name from the mountain, which signaled people traveling Route 66 and Interstate 40 that rest was nearby.

Yetta Kohn (1843 – 1917)

Born in Bavaria and widowed in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Yetta ran the family store and raised four children alone. She later moved to La Cinta on the Canadian River where she opened another store, became postmistress, started a bank and operated a ferry. She eventually bought land that became the 4V Ranch, which expanded into the T-4 Cattle Company, operated today by her descendants.
