The Lathrop family lived in a cabin south of the creek. They were home during the battle.

"In front of a log cabin stood an old woman, with several children clinging to her skirts, fearless of the leaden shower which ceaselessly pattered against the cabin wall. With gray locks floating in the wind, the old lady shouted, while we whirled past, 'God bless you, boys! God bless you boys! Hurra for the Union! Hurra for Kansas! Give it to 'em.' The sight was inspiring. With a wild shout the troops cleared the fence, swept over the prairie beyond, and attacked the disordered rebels."

Chaos at the Crossing

At the creek at 11 a.m. on October 25, 1864, the four-to-five feet high banks were slippery and crumbling from a recent rain. The rushing water was deep, and the crossing was difficult. Hundreds of wagon wheels and horses had churned the mud into mires. The crossing was congested with supply wagons - some still attempting to cross, others disabled and stuck in the mud.

To avoid capture many panic-stricken, fleeing Confederates bypassed the crossing and plunged their horses down the steep bank into the water.

This is the main crossing of Mine Creek on the Fort Scott road. The solid rock creek bed made travel easier for wagons.

[Photo caption reads] The main crossing of Mine Creek - photographed during a drought when the creek was almost dry. The rock creek bed is visible.

The French built this powder magazine into the earthworks of their new fort in 1702. Both the French and the British used it to store gunpowder. In the early 1800s, it was used briefly as a prison or “Black Hole.”

In the 1890s, local citizens who were concerned about the dilapidated state of Fort Anne won a grant from the Government of Canada to restore this magazine.

Two cemeteries are located in this burial ground: the earlier Acadian parish cemetery and the later Church of England cemetery. The wooden markers once placed on most of the graves have long since decayed. The gravestones that remain represent only a small portion of the burials here.

Starting in the middle 1600s, the Roman Catholic parish of St. Jean Baptiste located its cemetery in this area. Acadians from the Port-Royal area, French soldiers and administrators along with their families were buried here. There are no original signs of this cemetery visible.

When the British took the fort in 1710, they established a cemetery. This burial ground served the garrison and the Town of Annapolis Royal from 1710 until 1940.

You are standing on the west bastion which, in the 1700s, was the principal bastion. This being the closest bastion to the river, a flag was flown here to show approaching vessels who controlled the stronghold.

Important ceremonies took place here. In 1726, the British Crown and chiefs of the Mi’kmaw, Maliseet and Abenaki nations ratified a treaty during a trilingual ceremony. Also in 1726, some Acadians of the Annapolis Royal area swore a conditional oath of allegiance to the British Crown at this bastion.

On the morning of July 9, six-year-old Glenn Worthington was ushered into the farmhouse cellar with his family and their slaves. The windows had been boarded with thick oak boards and tubs of drinking water were placed in the cellar. Young Glenn peered between the gaps of the boarded windows, witnessing horrific events as the battle unfolded.

When the fighting stopped, Glenn helped his family tend to the wounded soldiers who lay in the yard. That afternoon, Glenn was injured while trying to retrieve a bayonet from a pile of burning rifles. A coal from the fire ignited a cartridge, which exploded in his face. Glenn was burned, but fully recovered in a few weeks.

In June 1864, with Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant intent on destroying Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army, Lee developed a bold plan to capture Washington, D.C. He sent Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early with 15,000 troops to invade the North. Pushing through the Shenandoah Valley to Frederick, Maryland, Early expected to encounter minor resistance, but instead he found an opposing force of 6,600 troops he had not anticipated. Although his army prevailed at the Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864, the delay cost Early his chance to take Washington and, perhaps, to turn the war in favor of the Confederacy.

Fort San Jacinto

Texas, Galveston County, Galveston
The northeastern tip of Galveston Island has seen defense fortifications since the early 1800's. Crude Spanish and French forts (1816-1818) gave way to small sand forts and batteries constructed by the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1844. In 1863 the Confederate Army built sandbag breastworks and an earthen battery named Fort Point. All traces of these early fortifications were destroyed by the strong winds and tides which regularly reshaped the sandy tip of the island. A more substantial fortification call Fort San Jacinto was built here by the U.S. Army in 1897. After the fort was destroyed in the 1900 storm, the Galveston seawall was extended northward in 1921 to protect the area. The fort was rebuilt and new gun emplacements were added for the defense of Galveston during World War II. The round, concrete base of one of these 90-mm gun emplacements remains here today. For San Jacinto was decommissioned in 1959.

Rollover Fish Pass

Texas, Galveston County, Gilchrist
A strait approximately 200 feet wide, 5 feet deep and more than 1,600 feet long across Bolivar Peninsula - was opened in 1955 by the Texas Game and Fish Commission as part of its continuing program to perpetuate and improve the state's fish and wildlife resources.

The commission's purposes in constructing this pass were to introduce into East Bay sufficient quantities of sea water to increase bay water salinity, and to provide additional opportunity for travel of marine fish to and from spawning and feeding areas in the bay.

Lower salinity in East Bay was caused by the discharge of several fresh water streams into the area on the mainland side of the peninsula. This excessive fresh water not only limited the existence of marine fish but also restricted the growth of submerged vegetation, which provides nursery areas and forms the basis of the food cycle for marine life.

Creation of Rollover Fish Pass has greatly improved salt water fishing conditions for the thousands of sportsmen who flock to East Bay throughout the year.

Known as Rollover long before the Texas Game and Fish Commission constructed the fish pass, this site has a history steeped in legend dating back to the days of the Spaniards and continuing through the American prohibition period.

According to legend, it was first called Rollover because certain early ship captains preferring to avoid contact with the customs station at Galveston would roll barrels of imported merchandise from the Gulf side of Bolivar Peninsula over to East Bay. From there the barrels were transferred to the mainland without further formality.

The same rolling procedure - in reverse - also is said to have been used for selected items of export.

On the morning of July 9, 1864, C. Keefer Thomas hosted two Union officers at his breakfast table, talking about the impeding battle. Later that morning as the battle drew near, the Thomas family, with several houseguests, neighbors, enslaved laborers, and dogs, entered the farmhouse cellar. Here they experienced "hours of suspense, anxiety, and at times, terror," as one guest later recalled. Caught in a tug-of-war, the house was bombarded by artillery and minie balls, suffering significant damage. As the Union troops retreated, the cellar occupants emerged to find the farm in shambles with hundreds of dead and wounded soldiers scattered about the farm.
