Conclusion of Price Campaign

When Major General Sterling Price commenced his invasion of Missouri he had several objectives. By the time he reached Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in November, not a single objective had been met. He failed to take St. Louis and Jefferson City, and he did not install a Confederate governor in Missouri. He had to destroy the huge wagon train of much needed supplies and most of the new recruits deserted on the retreat from Mine Creek.

Following Price's retreat the Confederate effort west of the Mississippi River was minimal. Mine Creek was one of the last significant engagements fought in the west.

Nursing the Wounded

When the armies moved south, hundreds of dead and wounded men were left behind on the battlefield. As soon as the shooting stopped civilians from nearby homes offered assistance.

Men "had fallen all about the house and crawled away to fence corners or brush. When all the wounded were taken from the field we went to the hospital which was established in a cabin north of the creek. Here indeed was a sickening scene, men wounded in almost every way possible. Some were bearing their pain without a murmur, some groaning, some crying, some praying and some dying."
- Barbara Jane (Palmer) Dolson

Field hospitals were established in six homes including the Lathrop home south of the creek and the Ragain home northeast of this point near present day highway K-52.

Cavalry Horses

Kansas, Linn County, near Pleasanton

Throughout the war a variety of horses were used by both sides. Morgans, American Saddlebreds, Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, and Quarter Horses are only a few. The ideal horse was a mare or a gelding, aged four or five years, with a height of 56 to 64 inches (14 to 16 hands) at the shoulders.

The Union army purchased horses while Confederates brought their own mounts from home. When a horse was sick, injured, or killed, the Confederate soldier had 60 days to replace his mount at his own expense. If he could not replace the horse he was forced into the infantry.

By October 1864, after three and a half years of war, horses with the ideal requirements were becoming scarce. Cavalrymen from both sides accepted any horse that was available.

The battle at Mine Creek was one of the largest cavalry battles of the Civil War. Thousands of men and horses took part in the engagement.

Cavalry regiments played an important role. In the beginning they supported the infantry and artillery and screened their movements from the enemy. They also gathered information as to the whereabouts and strength of enemy troops. After victorious battles they pursued and harassed the retreating troops; in a defeat they covered the rear of their own army and executed defensive actions to delay the advance of the enemy. Toward the end of the war the cavalry took on a more offensive role such as it did at Mine Creek.

Lunenburg - Home of the Bluenose & Bluenose II

Nova Scotia, Lunenburg County, Lunenburg
English
On March 26, 1921, Smith & Rhuland’s launched hull number 121, the fishing schooner Bluenose. Built from a design by William J. Roué, Bluenose at 258 tons, was the largest schooner ever launched at Lunenburg. Although built primarily to challenge the Americans who had won the first series for the International Fishermen’s Trophy, she also has to pay her own way as a working fishing vessel. In 1921, under the command of Captain Angus Walters of Lunenburg, she defeated the Gloucester, Massachusetts schooner Elsie and successfully defended her title four times between 1922 and 1938. Each time she had to defeat other Canadian challengers in order to ear the right to race against the Americans.

Bluenose represented Canada in England at Silver Jubilee festivities for King George V and Queen Mary in 1935, and was the Maritime Provinces’ representative at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933

Throughout her illustrious racing carrer, Bluenose was also a “high liner” fishing vessel, providing her owners with a good return on their investment.

By 1942 she had outlived her usefulness as a fishing vessel and was sold to the West Indies Trading Company. She was lost in a storm off the coast of Haiti in January 1946.

Bluenose’s legacy lives on with her depiction on a stamp issued in the 1930’s, on the Canadian dime, and in Bluenose II, a replica also designed by Roué and built by Smith and Rhuland for the Oland Brewery in 1963. Bluenose II, now operated by the Bluenose II Preservation Trust, serves as Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador and a symbol of Lunenburg’s great seafaring heritage. When in port, she is available for public sailings and ticket can be purchased at the Bluenose II Ships’ Company Store on (where else!) Bluenose Drive.

While visiting Lunenburg, count the number of times the word “Bluenose” appears around Town.

Lunenburg’s Shipbuilding Tradition

Nova Scotia, Lunenburg County, Lunenburg
English
Lunenburg’s success in the fishery stimulated the construction of many fishing vessels. Almost all of the schooners fishing out of Lunenburg during the Town’s first 200 years were built in the Town or in other Lunenburg County ports. Local shipbuilders also built vessels which were involved in the carrying trade along the eastern seaboard of North America and south to the West Indies and South America.

Many builders specialized in smaller boats such as whalers, dories, skiffs and flats. Boatbuilders such as Joseph McLachlan, James Maxner, William Morash, and Alexander Anderson were just a few of the Town’s well-known boat builders. Lunenburg dories, used exclusively bt the Town’s fishing fleet for over 100 years, were the main product of the smaller yards.

Shipbuilding and boat building also led to the growth of industries required to outfit the vessels and the Town became the home of numerous sailmakers, riggers, shipwrights, marine blacksmiths and marine engine shops. Shipyards such as Lunenburg Foundry also refitted vessels during the Second World War.

The Town’s most renowned 20th century shipyard was Smith and Rhuland. From 1900 until 1975, more than 210 vessels, mostly fishing schooners and trawlers, were launched from her ways. Beside Bluenose and her replica Bluenose II, the yard also built the replicas of HMS Bounty and HMS Rose. Soctia Trawler Limited, the successor to Smith and Rhuland carries on a shipbuilding tradition in the Town dating back to the 18th century.

What is the name given to the major marine slip in Lunenburg?

Historic Shubenacadie Canal System

Nova Scotia, Halifax Regional Municipality, Dartmouth
Vessels entering Lock two, traveling northward, were approximately 19 meters above the level of the Harbour. This lock would raise them another three or four meters enabling them the make their way along the canal to Lock three. This present lock was completed in 1857. However the first lock at this site was constructed by Irish and Scottish canal workers in the late 1820’s. It was built totally of granite and was much larger than the present one - six meters longer and over a meter wider. The granite was obtained from the King’s Quarry in Purcells Cove. Horse-drawn carts transported the rough stones from the Harbour to the foot of Lake Banook where they were loaded on a barge and transported to the shore close by. The final shaping of the stones was carried out in this area by highly skilled stone masons who lived in small crude huts just to the east of the lock.

The granite used on the east wall of Lock two was from the original structure. However, all the stones had to be removed and reset. The west wall was constructed following a procedure used on American waterway such as the Morris Canal in New Jersey which became a model for the Shubenacadie. Because of the two types of construction, this Lock is referred to by engineers as a “hybrid.” This may be te only such lock in existence.

Not far from this Lock, on the shores of Lake Micmac, was a camping area used by the Mi’kmaq who frequently canoed the canal system. When their craft were loaded, the Mi’kmaq used the locks and inclined plane in a manner similar to the canal barges. There are a number of referenced in the canal-keepers’ logs which speak of passing a canoe through the lock or over the incline. Other stop-over areas used by the Mi’kmaq were located near Red Bridge Pond and on lands now known as Findlay Park, adjacent to Lock one. During the 1970’s an archaeological excavation on the shores of Lake Micmac unearthed many stone tools which are now part of the collection of the Nova Scotia Museum.

(Sidebar on the left. To enlarge the map, click of the photo image.)

• Used by the Mi’kmaq for centuries, the Shubenacadie waterway was carved out of the bedrock by glaciers during the last ice age.
• Work on the Canal system began in 1826, ceased in 1831 and resumed in 1854. The Canal was completed in 1861. Construction of 9 locks, and 2 incline planes connected the chain of 7 lakes and the Shubenacadie River enabling boats to travel from Halifax Harbour to the Minas Basin.
• The Shubenacadie Canal opened in sections and operated between 1856 and 1870. Steam vessels hauled barges laden with goods along the System.
• By 1870, railways were able to transport goods cheaper and faster forcing closure of the Canal.
• Today the Shubenacadie Canal System is a National Historic Civil Engineering site and a popular recreation and heritage corridor.
