The Yorktown Windmill

History of the Original Yorktown Windmill

Built in 1711 by William Buckner, the Yorktown Windmill was a guidepost on the York River for nearly two centuries. After retiring from his post as Surveyor General of Virginia, Buckner purchased the pointed bluff just above Yorktown from John Lewis of Gloucester for the express purpose of building a mill to grind corn. Although Buckner died only five years later, the mill continued to provide most of the flour for York County throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Although the mill was never photographed, there are a number of paintings, engravings and sketches that show the windmill and its location through the years. The first of these is a painting entitled, “A View of the Town of York Virginia from the River” which was painted by Lt. Thomas Davies, an officer on the H.M.S. Success during its voyage to Nova Scotia and Virginia from 1754-1756.

Perhaps the best known depiction of the windmill is in the painting by James and Charles Peale entitled “Washington and his Generals at Yorktown”. Painted in 1784, the image is a depiction of the Commanders following the siege of Yorktown. While the windmill is not the central focus of the painting, its inclusion here demonstrates that the mill survived in the original location from its construction in 1711 through the end of the American Revolution.

A depiction of the Yorktown Windmill in decline is portrayed in the image entitled, "View of Yorktown, from the Old Windmill, as You Approach from Williamsburg." A hand-colored wood engraving, this image was published in 1848 by Robert Sears as part of his collection, "A New and Popular Pictorial Description of the United States."

A Yorktown Landmark

During both the American Revolution and the American Civil War, Yorktown took the center stage of history during key campaigns. Military and logistical maps from both periods show the Yorktown Windmill as a landmark. Research conducted during the reconstruction of the Yorktown Windmill, suggests that it may have relocated across Windmill Creek in the early 1800s.

The Reconstructed Windmill

Plans to reconstruct the Yorktown Windmill began in 2008 during discussion between engineer Walt Akers and Superintendent Dan Smith of Colonial National Historical Park. The design seen here is derived from surviving paintings of the original mill, examination of research from the Historic American Building Survey and site visits to nearly a dozen surviving American windmills from the 18th and 19th centuries. The reconstructed windmill stands less than 100 yards from where the original windmill was built.

This fully functional replica was built in Seaford, Virginia by more than 100 volunteers over the course of three years. Each of their names is engraved on a commemorative stone plaque that is mounted inside the mill. In the fall of 2011, the windmill was disassembled and relocated to this site in time for the 300th anniversary of the construction of the original. The Yorktown Windmill, named “Miss Evelyn” for the designer’s wife, was dedicated on October 19th, 2011.

The Yorktown Windmill remains on permanent loan from the Akers’ Family to the Watermen’s Museum.

In the style of a Scottish stone croft (farmhouse), this house was erected by James Whitehill, a prosperous farmer and one of a large number of immigrants from Inchinnan Parish, Scotland, who settled Ryegate under the sponsorship of the Scotch American Company of Farmers. He purchased 600 acres, known as the Witherspoon Tract, from James Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence who owned the entire township. Whitehill was a founder of the Ryegate Reformed Presbyterian Church. This is one of the oldest surviving houses in Ryegate and was the first library in town. The house and surrounding acreage is still owned by the Whitehill family.

1800 Brick House 1963

New York, Genesee County, Pembroke
1800 Brick House 1963 ——·•·—— John and James Richardson settled at the crossroads of two Indian trails in the early 1800's, building a log structure to be used for a tavern. The people fleeing from the burning of Buffalo, in 1813, took refuge here. DeWitt Clinton and his party stayed here in 1815 on this way to Batavia, to discuss plans for the Erie Canal.

The original tavern burned about 1813. The Richardsons constructed a new house of brick, from red clay they found on the farm, about 1831.

In 1962 the property was sold to the School District for the construction of a new Junior Senior High School. The brick building was leveled in 1963.

Carved in Stone

Nova Scotia, Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax

These gravestones were all carved by hand, using chisels and wooden mallets. Many of the old slate stones were quarried and carved around Massachusetts Bay, and shipped to Halifax before the American Revolution. By the 1770s local stone carvers were making gravestones from a poorer quality local slate (or “ironstone”). Most gravestones carved after 1820 are plain, massive sandstone.
The images or symbols can be a clue to age. Older stones show symbols of death-stylized winged skulls (“death-heads”) or winged angels (soul effigies). In the early 1800s the images gradually changed from representations of death to those of bereavement-funerary urns, lamps (of life, extinguished), and sometimes sprigs of willow (weeping).

The Old Burying Ground

Nova Scotia, Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax
English
In this common burial ground lie many of the first citizens of Halifax, their descendants and men of the British Army and the Royal Navy who were stationed here. First opened in 1749, the year Halifax was founded, it was used until 1844. During that period, over 12,000 men, women, and children were buried here; fewer than 10% of their graves are marked.

The graveyard was granted to St. Paul’s in 1793 and the church has maintained it ever since. Unfortunately, natural elements and vandalism took their toll and by the mid 1980s the site required extensive work. Public and private funds were sought by the Old Burying Ground Foundation. A complete record was made of the site (1984), a landscape plan implemented and tilted stones reset (1990-91).

Old Burying Ground

English
The Old Burying Ground, which contains more than 1,200 head and footstones, constitutes a unique concentration of gravestone art. A rich variety of styles, poignant images and carving skill is reflected in these old stones. The winged skulls and the winged heads, or soul effigies, are exceptional. Used by all denominations, the Old Burying Ground served the city of Halifax from 1749 until its closure in 1844. Fenced and landscaped in the 1860s, it was restored as a park and outdoor museum in 1990-1991. It bears silent witness to the complex cultural traditions of early British North Americans.

Spicer

Minnesota, Kandiyohi County, Spicer
Green Lake has had three names. The Dakota who spent their summers here for hundreds of years, called it Mdeto.

The first whites called it Carnelian, for its red sandy beaches. Later settlers observed the green color, as the Indians had, and renamed it Green Lake.

Spicer has had two names. The town "boomers" who laid it out in August, 1856 – E. T. Woodcock, J. M. Ayers and V. L. Forsythe – called it Columbia. E. T. Woodcock and his wife, Loretta, spent the winter of 1856-57 in Columbia.

Spicer was named for pioneer railroader J. M. Spicer, who owned the town site, and built his St. Cloud to Sioux Falls Railroad through here in 1886.

Sponsored by the Kandiyohi County Historical Society and Erected in 1990
