The Great Fire of 1877
One of the most destructive fires of modern times occurred at Saint John, N.B., on Wednesday, June 20th, 1877. It was more calamitous in its character than the terrible conflagration which plunged portions of Chicago into ruin, and laid waste the great business houses of Boston a few years ago”.The Story of the Great Fire in Saint John, N.B., author George Stewart (1848-1906)

To truly appreciate the harmonious rhythm of the architecture that currently graces the streets of uptown Saint John and in particular the Trinity Royal Heritage Preservation Area, one must understand the impact that “Great Fire” of 1877 had on the community: George Stewart in his The Story of the Great Fire in Saint John, N.B. provides a very vivid description to the fire and with this quote he attempts to put the fire in perspective with the other “great fires” which occurred in the 19th century in North America.

The Saint John fire of 1877 destroyed two-thirds of the central portion of the city. Lost in the fire were businesses, churches, and homes along with all their inventory, records, photographs, heirlooms and memorabilia. The extent of the damage, destruction and loss was so great that many insurance companies went bankrupt trying to satisfy claims.

By 1881, however, a mere four years later, the city had re-built itself, and in fact during this period of reconstruction, more buildings were erected than were originally lost. The best architects, craftsmen and artisans were brought from Montreal, Boston, New York and Halifax to work with leading Saint John designers to re-build the city.

As you look down Germain Street, it is hard to imagine, but for the most part all the buildings you can see were erected during the four-year "re-building” of Saint John. Akin to the pheonix (sic) rising from the ashes it was this incredible act of destruction - the “Great Fire” of 1877 that enabled Saint John to have the magnificent streetscapes that presently surround.

Trinity Royal
Preservation Area

English
You are standing on the northern boundary of what s known as “Trinity Royal”. In 1982, in order to maintain the unique nature of the surrounding 19th century architecture, the City enacted a by-law and designated “Trinity Royal” a heritage preservation area. This heritage preservation area encompasses twenty city blocks on the western half of the central peninsula, approximately half of the rebuilt city. It’s western boundary being Water Street, then it runs north along King Street, east as far as Charlotte Street and south to Harding Street. King’s Square and Queen Square are both included. The designated streets are easily identified by the blue and white heritage street signs.

The name “Trinity Royal” comes from the dominance of the beautiful steeple and weather vane of Trinity Anglican Church on Germain Street, a land mark that can be seen from almost anywhere in the uptown area. This is combined with the “royal” street names that criss-cross the area - King, Queen, Princess, Duke and Prince William Streets. Another interesting point is that the boundaries of the designated area also nearly replicated the original city as laid out by the Loyalists, which they has christened Parr Town, after John Parr, the Governor of Nova Scotia.

“Trinity Royal” is unique in that it encompasses both business and residential architecture . A stroll down Germain Street will quickly demonstrate this face. The first block, known as “The Quality Block” is dominated by commercial establishments, but crossing Princess Street, the building soon become predominately residential. Originally designed and built as single-family homes, today many of these grand residences have been converted into multi-family dwellings. Sir Leonard Tilley, New Brunswick’s Father of Confederation, and Lady Alice Tilley resided at 223 Germain Street, while New Burnswick’s first oil magnate Joseph Bullock erected residences for himself and family members at 179, 183, 185 and 187 Germain Street.

Much is known of the architecture and origins of these magnificent structures and can be found in the City of Saint John’s publication: Three Historic Walking Tours available at all Tourist Information Centres. Enjoy your stroll into our past!

The Butterfield Overland Mail, the first public transportation facility spanning the area from the Mississippi to the Pacific with passenger and mail service, 1858-61, used the 2400-foot peak to the northeast as a beacon. The drivers and passengers viewed it for 30 to 40 miles. In that era it was called Abercrombie Peak, for Col. J.J. Abercrombie of the U.S. Army, active in defense of this frontier. Waterman Ormsby, a newspaper reporter riding the first Butterfield stage to pass this way, noted that the peak resembled a fortress. Later the height was renamed Castle Peak.

On New Year’s Day, 1871, Indian raiders who had stolen horses in Coleman County were pursued and overtaken here by 18 Texas Rangers and cowboys. Leaders of the group were Captain James M. Swisher and rancher Sam Gholson.
The Indians took refuge in the heights west of Mountain Pass. The ensuing battle lasted all day, and at nightfall the raiders left the horses and fled.
Of the fewer than one dozen Indians, one was killed, several wounded. One cowboy was wounded and another, J.M. Elkins, recorded the battle in his book “Indian Fighting on the Texas Frontier”.

Born into an affluent Tennessee family, Cornelia Fort attended the Ward-Belmont School in Nashville and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in New York in 1939. She returned to a society life in Tennessee but was soon introduced to flying by a friend.
In her first week in the air, Fort logged over 2,000 miles. She became an instructor in 1941, a year after her first flying lesson. She worked with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s civilian pilot training program at Fort Collins, Colorado, before taking a similar position in Hawaii. She was airborne with a trainee when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor; Fort landed safely while under enemy fire.
By 1942 she was part of the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS) commended by Nancy Harkness Love. Fort and 26 other women pilots ferried war planes across the United States. Fort was transferred to a new squadron in Long Beach, California. On March 21, 1943, she ferried a BT-13A airplane toward Dallas’ Love Field. While flying in formation, her plane struck another aircraft. Available records indicate that Fort was the first American woman pilot to die on active military duty when she plunged into the rugged terrain of Mulberry Canyon, three miles southeast of this site. Shortly before her death at age 24, Cornelia wrote, “I am grateful that my one talent, flying, was useful to my country.”
On August 4, 1943, WAFS personnel merged with and helped create the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), led by noted aviator Jacqueline Cochran. The WASP’s most famous training ground was Avenger Field at Sweetwater in nearby Nolan County.

Mulberry Canyon

Human activity in this area has been traced to prehistoric eras. Native American tribes roamed this land with the buffalo, deer, turkey, mountain lion, and black bear. Among the first recorded ventures into the canyon were the Military Road Survey and the Forty-Niner Mail Route of 1849. The Military Road was used by the Butterfield Stage Overland Mail route from 1858 to 1861. The canyon was named for the mulberry trees that grew along the largest creek.
Cattle ranchers began to use the canyon in the 1870s. The last herds of buffalo passed through Mulberry Canyon in 1878 just before pioneer families began to build communities. In 1879 settlers planted maize, corn, and wheat; the first cotton was planted in 1886. The last black bear lived as a pet on the Brown Ranch in the 1880s.
Over half a dozen small communities sprang up in the canyon. Ten churches and ten schools have served the area, which at its peak had a population of 500. The earliest marked grave in White Church Cemetery is dated 1883. Nubia, the only town, had a post office until 1917. The last store closed in 1946.
In 1997, descendants of the pioneer settlers still occupied much of Mulberry Canyon.

Haugen Homestead

Minnesota, Kandiyohi County, near Willmar
In May 1859, Olof Olson Haugen, his wife Bergeret, and son Frederick homesteaded here in section 32, Dovre Township. Over the next three years, the Haugen family diligently worked to establish their new life; building shelter, raising crops and animals, and developing relationships with people who came before them.

Dakota people had hunting and fishing camps in Kandiyohi County before the American and European immigrants came. These immigrants had to learn how to co-exist with the Dakota. Many settlers had good relationships with the Dakota and would trade goods and food with them, thus it was a surprise when 25-30 warriors attacked them in August 1862.

On August 21, 1862, Olof Haugen had gone to Green Lake to get the mail and do trading. A Dakota war party came upon their homestead and killed both Bergeret and Frederick. Their bodies were later discovered by a burial party and buried at this site.

This project has been financed in part with funds provided by
the State of Minnesota through the Minnesota Historical Society from the Arts and
Cultural Heritage Fund and the Kandiyohi County Historical Society.

In 1541, the Spanish explorer Coronado is thought to have passed this way en route from New Mexico to the fabled Indian villages of “Quivira”, though his path across vast Texas plains is now difficult to determine.
Upon finding that his Indian guide, “The Turk,” had taken him too far south, Coronado halted at a small canyon or barranca.
Here he conferred with his captains and decided to follow the compass directly north.
When they reached “Quivira” (possibly in Kansas), no gold was found – only the poor, grass huts of a Wichita village.

Alderbrook developed around a sawmill built by H.C. Libbey in 1877. The Village grew to include a post office, a dozen company-owned houses, a boarding house, school and railroad station. The mill employed as many as 40 to 60 men and cut as much as 3 to 5 million board feet each year of lumber, clapboards, lath and shingles. It was sold to a Portland company in July 1909 and was destroyed by fire five months later. The blaze was likely started by a spark from a freight engine. The mill was not rebuilt and the once productive hamlet disappeared as the company left for other tracts of timber.
