Cavalry Corps.
Brigadier General Robert B. Mitchell.

September 17th to September 22, 1863.
1st Division - Colonel Edward M. McCook.
2d Division - Brigadier General George Crook.

The Cavalry Corps arrived in McLemore's Cove from the rear of LaFayette and the vicinity of Summerville and Alpine via Lookout Mountain and Dougherty's Gap, September 17th, McCook's Division in advance. The Corps was actively engaged throughout the battle in defending the fords on the upper Chickamauga against Wheeler's Cavalry and protecting the right of the Army. It occupied Crawfish Springs the evening of the 19th, and successfully held the enemy's cavalry back until 5 p.m. of September 20th when Mitchell began to fall back through Chattanooga Valley, having been joined here by Post's Brigade of Davis' Division from Stevens' Gap at noon, taking off all trains and all wounded from the hospital here who could be moved. During the 21st the corps was in line of battle all day across Chattanooga Valley, north of McCullough's Mill and south of Rossville, frequently skirmishing with the enemy's cavalry.
On the morning of the 22d, it was withdrawn to Chattanooga, a portion of McCook's Division covering the rear and successfully resisting several sharp attacks.

Locomotive No. 2714

Wisconsin, Fond du Lac County, Fond du Lac

This engine was built in 1911 by the American Locomotive Company of New York. It was one of four engines purchased by the Wisconsin Central in May, 1911. It was built light for passenger service. It weighs almost 100 tons. It was fired by a stoker and the tender held 12,000 gallons of water and 175 tons of coal and was able to maintain 200 pounds of pressure. It pulled up to 18 passenger cars and could reach 80 miles per hour.

While in service No. 2714 logged over 2 million miles. It made runs from Fond du Lac to Stevens Point and Minneapolis. At one time it also ran between here and Winnipeg, Canada. The 800 mile trip to Winnipeg, was the longest continuous run of any steam engine in the United States at the time.

This 79 year-old "iron horse" was moved to this site in July, 1955. About 20 volunteer Soo Line switch crewmen moved the locomotive to the Chicago & Northwestern tracks at North Fond du Lac. A Northwestern crew transported the engine from that site to a specially constructed spur, built by the same volunteer Soo Line crew, from the end of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad spur across the street from here to where the engine now rests. A Whiting car mover used at the Soo Line's round house moved the engine across the temporary tracks. The tracks and material upon which the engine now rests were donated to the city by the Soo Line.

Three sister engines have since been scrapped. This engine was retired February 15, 1955 and donated to the city of Fond du Lac by the Soo Line and Wisconsin Central Railroad and dedicated July 4th of the same year.

Refurbishing of this engine in 1990 was spearheaded by the Kiwanis Club of Fabulous Fond du Lac under the leadership of Jerry Brunette and Bob Kahl at a cost of $10,500 and re-dedicated on July 4th of that year.

Wharton's Division - Brigadier General John A. Wharton.
Martin's Division - Brigadier General William T. Martin.

Troops of this Corps were engaged in guarding the passes of Lookout Mountain as far as Gadsden, Alabama, and the upper fords of the Chickamauga.
The remainder of the Corps was concentrated at Glass' Mill. About 11 A.M. Wheeler, with this latter force dismounted, crossed the river and attacked Long's Brigade of Crook's Cavalry Division, 900 strong, and after a severe fight drove it back to the vicinity of Crawfish Springs, the Union loss in killed, wounded and missing being 131.
He then recrossed the river under orders to proceed to Lee and Gordon's Mills and attack the enemy.
He arrived there about 3 o'clock, again crossed and attacked capturing a number of prisoners, wagons, arms and a quantity of ammunition.
He then moved to Crawfish Springs where, about dark, he captured the Union hospitals, together with such wounded as could not bear transportation when the Union forces withdrew from that place at 5 P.M.

Scottish Strength

New Brunswick, Saint John County, Saint John
English
Saint John has a strong Scottish presence. The breakup of the clan system in the late 18th century caused massive emigration from the Highlands. As a result, some 25 percent of the population has Scottish ancestry. Scottish influence is found throughout Greater Saint John in the names of streets and neighbourhoods such as MacKay Highway, McLaren Boulevard, ad the community of Upper Loch Lomond.

Saint John is home to Canada’s oldest Saint Andrew’s Society, which held it first meeting on March 8, 1798. William Pagan, a successful merchant and politician was elected president - the first in a long line of prominent citizens at the helm, including mayors, chief justices, and lieutenant-governors. Among them was Robert Foulis, famous for inventing the world’s first steam fog alarm, which was installed at Partridge Island in 1859.

The Saint Andrew’s Society’s two principal tenets - benevolent assistance to the natives of Scotland and their descendants, and support of Scottish culture - remain strong today. The Society opened Saint Andrew’s House, a senior citizens’ apartment complex, in 1992. Saint Andrew’s Day is celebrated annually with a gala that features traditional dress, music, fare, and , of course, the famous haggis , made of sheep’s or calf’s heart, liver, etc., and minced with oatmeal, suet, and onions boiled in the animal’s stomach. And of course the annual Robbie Burns Night continues to pay hommage to Scottish ancestry.

What do you do for a 225th anniversary The answer in Canada’s first incorporated city was celebrate! Saint John 225: The Original City/La ville originale was a year-long celebration of the city’s heritage, creativity and cultures. Neighbourhoods and community organizations, regional and local businesses and all levels of government helped Saint John live up to its title as a 2010 Cultural Capital of Canada.

Saint John 225 was a year of festivals: the Original Flavour of Saint John Fundy Food Festival, the First Nations Festival, the Rising Tides Festival, Festival de la Baie Francaise and many more/ Sports fans thrilled to the 2010 Acadian Games, watched the Seadogs hockey team win the QMJHL Memorial Cup and cheered for local players at the Lily Lake Pond Hockey Tournament.

From around the world, people added their Saint John stories, memories and insights to a unique online project called City Stories: Our People’s History. Saint Joh 225 commissioned artist Peter Powning to make a sculpture for Harbour Passage that included imprints of people’s prized Saint John memorabilia. In a generous gesture by industry leader Jack and John Irving, an elegant clock was erected at the foot of King Steet to commemorate the anniversary.

Art, writing, music, theatre and dance were celebrated with The Originals Saint John Arts Awards ceremony, while Enterprise Saint John sponsored a video tribute to the city’s heritage, arts and culture. On December 31, 2010, the city’s 225th ended with a bang as the Original New Year’s Eve Celebration featured sports awards, a free concert and spectacular fireworks.

New Brunswick’s Original Business Centre

Saint John was incorporated on May 18, 1785, when King George III signed a Royal Charter to join the communities of Parrtown to the east of Saint John Harbour and Carleton to the west into one city.

It rapidly became a major North American port of entry for immigrants, welcoming newcomers from around the world and starting the city’s tradition of cultural diversity.

New Brunswick’s first Governor, Thomas Carleton, regulated fishing, shipbuilding and trade in the busy port city, already a centre for commerce, manufacturing and transportation. Located about 110 km (68 miles) from the nearest border with the United States, Saint John serves domestic and international business through its road and rail connections. Ship transport exports and import cargos through the deep-water, year-round port, while cruise ship passengers keep the waterfront hopping with ships arriving weekly from June to October.
