Utica Area

Historic New York

Utica Area
Situated on the important Mohawk Valley route between the Hudson River and the Great Lakes, Utica has long been a travel crossroads. Indian trails converged there, and Fort Schuyler was built on the site in 1758. The community which grew around the fort's ruins became the village of Utica in 1798.

During the American Revolution, patriot militia under General Nicholas Herkimer at Oriskany on August 6, 1777, halted an invasion by the British compelling them to raise the siege of Fort Stanwix (Rome). Tories and Indians raided Mohawk Valley communities until 1781. With peace, land speculators reopened the area to settlement.

Governor De Witt Clinton at Rome in 1817 started the construction of the Erie Canal, completed in 1825. The Erie Canal, its Chenango branch to Binghamton (1836) and railroad service (1837) increased Utica's importance as a transportation center, and the area prospered. Industrial production started early with textile mills along Sauquoit and Oriskany Creeks. At Ilion, Eliphalet Remington pioneered in manufacturing firearms. Rome became famous for its iron, copper and brass works.

Makers of electrical and electronic equipment have replaced textile factories, while fertile farmlands continue to provide dairy products.

North Creek Turntable

0
0
New York, Warren County, North Creek

Most steam locomotives are designed to operate in the forward direction, although they can operate in reverse at slow speed. Diesel locomotives can operated equally well forward or backward, but it is still desirable to orient them in a forward direction to provide the crew with better visibility. The turntable points locomotives in the proper direction.

The railroad's change from steam to diesel locomotives led to installation of the present 90-foot turntable in 1944. Unlike its 60-foot predecessor, which was rotated by sheer physical labor, the new turntable was powered by an electric motor. The turntable was completely restored with a New York State Historic Preservation Grant in 2003.

Pershing Rifles

0
0
Nebraska, Lancaster County, Lincoln

General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces to Europe in World War I, was Professor of Military Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln between September 1891 and June 1895. Upon his arrival in Lincoln, which was to become his family's home, Pershing found the morale of the Reserve Officers Training Corps at low ebb. To infuse life into the corps, Pershing built an elite drill team which eventually became known as the Society of Pershing Rifles.

The organization served its purpose well, and from 1900-1911 it carried prestige not only in military circles but in the social life of the University as well. Many of its young officer-graduates were on active duty in the Spanish-American War and in World War I. After Pershing was transferred to another post, interest in the Rifles waned and in 1917 it was disbanded. Interest returned in the 1920s, and in 1925 a chapter was installed at Ohio State University. Today Pershing Rifle Societies are found in over 100 universities. Pershing was elected to the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1964, and his bust placed in the Nebraska State Capitol in 1965.

Mammuthus Columbi

Nebraska, Lancaster County, Lincoln

Mammoths roamed Nebraska's grasslands for more than one million years before mysteriously disappearing between 11,000 and 10,000 years ago. These extinct relatives of today's elephants were the largest mammals ever to walk the Great Plains. Adult males stood more than 13 feet tall at the shoulder and had a weight of over 24,000 pounds. Mammoth bones and teeth have been found in Ice Age deposits in all but three of Nebraska's 93 counties. Bones and tusks were uncovered just 100 yards east of where you are now standing. This sculpture was completed by Fred J. Hoppe in 1998.
