Powers Bank

David W. Powers began freighting on the Smoky Hill Trail in the early 1860's. His bull trains were outfitted at Leavenworth destined for Denver, Colorado and going as far as Salt Lake City, Utah. Powers established a bank in Salina, Kansas, in 1870 including his nephews James W. and David B. Powers as partners. The booming cattle trade at Ellsworth lured him to this location in 1873. The Powers Bank specialized in providing capital for cattle drovers whose business dealing ranged all over the west. The Powers family handled cattle extensively themselves, establishing the Bluff Creek Ranch near present-day Kanopolis Lake.

Fires plagued the businesses on South Main Street throughout the early years. The last of three devastating fires occurred in November 1875 destroying this entire block. Except one building near the center of the block, the buildings were entirely constructed of wood and the flames "licked up like so much straw, rapidly threatening the destruction of the whole town." Twenty-five buildings were burned. South Main would no longer be a thriving business center. Many businesses relocated on North Douglas Avenue while others left Ellsworth for good.

Perry Hodgden, a founding merchant of Ellsworth, built his house on this location following the fire. In 1963, the Ellsworth County Historical Society established the museum in his home and on the grounds that once were witness to the wild frontier days when Ellsworth was known as "The Wickedest Cowtown In The West."

Constructed in 1867 as the Old Iron Works and Machine Shop. In 1886 a new factory was built for the Consumer's Ice Company, incorporating the earlier walls of the original building. In 1891 an explosion partially destroyed the building. It was re-built by the Haubtman & Loab Machine Co. In the 1920s it housed La Belle Creole Cigar Factory (later known as the Irby Tobacco Factory). From 1943 to 1975 Universal Merchandise called it home; from 1976 to 1986 International Muffler leased the building. The building was vacant from 1986 to 1996 and many applications for demolition were filed and denied., the last being April, 1995. In May of 1996 the building was purchased and renovated by Great Chefs Television for their offices and warehouse. In 2004 the building was converted into mixed commercial and residential condominiums and the balcony was added.

Upper Landing Place

Head of navigation on the Mohawk in former days. Here for untold ages pre-Indian drew forth his canoe and transported it to Wood Creek. Here, also, for many decades, in times of normal water the white man landed his bateau.

During the siege of Fort Stanwix in Aug. 1777, Sir John Johnson had a camp of his Loyalist Regiment near this spot, which was attacked and looted Aug. 6, by Lt. Col. Marinus Willett and 250 of the garrison. On his return from his subsequent raid on the camp at the Lower Landing place on the same day, Willett was attacked a short distance north of here by a body of Brig. Gen. Barry St.Leger's British regulars, drawn up on the opposite side of the river. Sharp firing ensued, the British being driven back and the garrison re-entering the fort with much booty from the raided camps.

Guarding the landing place 1755-56 stood Fort Williams.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.
It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. Lexington Reservoir

Built: 1952
Lexington Reservoir, named for the historic 1850's town which once stood on the valley's floor, is a significant source of local drinking water. Water captured in this reservoir is released into Los Gatos Creek, where it percolates through the earth's layers until it reaches the underground aquifers which are the source for the valley's groundwater. This process cleans the water so it can later be pumped from wells for use in homes and businesses.

When constructed, the dam and reservoir shared the name Lexington. In 1977, the dam was renamed to honor James J. Lenihan, the Santa Clara Valley Water District's longest-serving director. During his 37 years of service, Lenihan's contributions to state and local water-management included securing federal water delivery through the San Felipe Project, and ensuring construction of the Guadalupe River Flood Control Project.

Lexington Reservoir provides many opportunities for water-related recreation. Sorry, for public-safety, no swimming is allowed.

In 1952, Santa Cruz Mountain rainwater flowing from the surrounding creeks filled the new reservoir and slowly covered what was left of the once prosperous towns of Lexington, Alma and an old portion of Highway 17. Looking out today across the deep cool water standing behind the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s Lexington Dam, only the two town’s submerged memories remain.

In 1848 William Hanks and Isaac Branham owned land and established a settlement in this area. They sold to Zechariah Jones who passed the property on to John Henning, who named it “Lexington”. The towns of Lexington and Alma, founded in 1862 by Lysander Collins, grew quickly to prominence due to the abundant timber spilling from the flumes of nearby sawmills. Both towns supported the daily existence of hundreds of hard working pioneer families who supplied lumber and produce to the growing California economy

The Santa Cruz Gap Toll Road, incorporating a road earlier built by Charles McKiernan (a.k.a. Mountain Charlie), along with a railroad line linked Alma, Lexington, and the smaller settlements of Patchen, Laurel Wrights and Glenwood to the cities of Santa Cruz and San Jose. The Southern Pacific abandoned its rail line in 1940 due to wash outs in the winter of 1939-1940 and the opening of State Highway 17. Remnants of the toll road, railroad track beds, two tunnels and a few ties are now visible to mountain hikers. The entire shoreline surrounding this reservoir became part of the Santa Clara County Park system in 1958.

The Miller Estate

Henry Miller, “The Cattle King”
With only $6 in his pocket, German immigrant Henry Miller (birth name Heinrich Alfred Kreiser) stepped off the boat in San Francisco in 1850 with one pervading ambition – to labor hard at a business in America. He knew the trade of raising and butchering cattle, so chose ranching.

At the peak of his ranching career, Miller controlled 14.5 million acres of land in California, Oregon and Nevada, where he grazed a million head of cattle and more than a hundred thousand sheep. Along with numerous businesses, ranch estates and a mansion in San Francisco, Mr. Miller owned a summer estate on Mt. Madonna.

Summers on Mt. Madonna
Henry Miller began buying property on Mt. Madonna in the 1870s. Logging had stripped much of the mountain of its dense forest, yielding panorama views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Clara Valley.

During their first mountain summers, the Miller family “roughed it”, entertaining visitors in colorful, furnished tents.

In the 1890s, Mr. Miller began building what would become three expansive “bungalows”. He terraced hillsides and planted lawns, flower gardens, an orchard and a vineyard. After Miller’s death in 1916, the estate fell into disrepair. In 1927, the County of Santa Clara began purchasing the property from Miller heirs for parkland.

In memory of
Michael R. Maione
1945 – 2003
A noted Lincoln scholar who served as associate editor of the Sentinel in Orange County for several years and as a historian at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C.   He gave several lectures in this area. He received a federal appointment to the Lincoln Bi-centennial Commission shortly before his death.
