The Central Emergency Government Headquarters

Irreverently known as the "Diefenbunker," this structure is a powerful symbol of Canada's response to the Cold War. Designed in the 1950s to withstand all but a direct his by a nuclear weapon, it was intended to shelter key political and military personnel during a nuclear attack. Fortunately, it never served its intended purpose, although the Diefenbaker government made plans to retreat to its protection during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. The bunker functioned as the hub of a communications network and civil defence system until it closed in 1994.

Utah, Millard County, Scipio
Built in 1935, the Scipio Town Hall is one of over 230 public works buildings constructed in Utah under various New Deal programs during the Depression years of the 1930's and 40's. The types of buildings constructed included schools, county courthouses, libraries, National Guard Armories and a variety of others. The Scipio Town Hall was intended for use both as a town hall and as a meeting place for all civic and political functions in the community. Two Scipio men Will and Lew Critchley were the brick and stone masons on the building. Several years after construction, probably in the late 1940's, the brick vestibule on the front was added. This building is a good example of the stylized classicism associated with the PWA Moderne architectural style in Utah. The building was renovated in 1986 with funds raised principally by the Round Valley Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers to be used as a museum for the D.U.P. and as a Senior Citizens Center.

The 1718 Stoddert survey map indicates William Bladen as the first recorded owner of lot 42. Charles Carroll purchased the property in 1725 and may have been responsible for the construction of the original side hall, double parlor plan when he and several other members of the General Assembly brought Jonas Green and his wife Ann Catherine to the colony in 1738. Green was designated the printer of the province in 1740, revived the Maryland Gazette in 1745, served as postmaster, job printer, city councilman, mason and vestryman at St. Anne's Parish. Following his death in 1767, Anne Catherine continued to publish the Maryland Gazette, the first woman in the colonies to do so. The foundations of Jonas' and Anne's print shop lie buried behind the house today. The dwelling has been consistently occupied by direct descendants of Jonas Green since his wife's death in 1775.

65th Infantry Regiment, The Borinqueneers
The 65th Infantry was created in 1899 by the U.S. Congress as an active unit composed primarily of Puerto Ricans. It went on to serve meritoriously in World War I, World War II and the Korean War.

Nicknamed “The Borinqueneers”, the men of the 65th performed valiantly during the Korean War participating in nine major campaigns and even earning praise from General Douglas MacArthur. The 56th Infantry is credited with the last recorded battalion-sized bayonet attack in U.S. Army history even while enduring the hardship of segregation and discrimination.

Amongst many decorations, the 65th earned over 10 Distinguished Service Crosses, 258 Silver Stars, 628 Bronze Stars, 2771 Purple Hearts, 2 U.S. Presidential Unit Citations, 1 Meritorious Unit Commendation and 2 Republic of Korea Citations.

Gabriel A. Rodriquez American Legion Post 1928
This tribute is dedicated to the Gabriel A. Rodriguez American Legion Post 1928. It was established in 1985 through the leadership of Marcos D. Lopez and other Hispanic veterans. Lopez, himself a decorated WWII U.S. Coast Guard veteran, was called home in 2007, and lays to rest in our nation’s hallowed ground “Arlington National Cemetery”.

The American Legion Post 1928 embraces veterans of all cultures but is recognized as the first Hispanic American Legion in Western New York. 'Post 1928' was dedicated to honor the memory of Specialist Gabriel A. Rodriquez as well as his service to his country. Specialist Rodriquez passed in 1981.

This inscription also serves as a reminder of the post-war struggles with “Agent Orange” and “Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome” by Specialist Rodriquez, other veterans and personnel associated with the Viet Nam conflict and all wars.

Lancaster, founded in 1763, lies on the bed of glacial Lake Coos, formed as the glaciers receded 14,000 years ago. Today, the Connecticut, an American Heritage River, flows along the bottom of the ancient lake.
You stand at a gateway to The Great North Woods Region. To the east, aligned from north to south, are Mounts Madison, Adams, Jefferson, and Washington, the highest peaks of the White Mountains' Presidential Range. Mt. Washington, at 6288 feet, is the highest in the Northeast. The strongest winds ever recorded, 231 miles per hour, were measured on its summit on April 12, 1934.

Green Mountain Hall

Vermont, Windham County, Whitingham

The structure, originally of Greek Revival design, was built in 1861 as a Universalist Church. As its membership declined toward the end of the 19th century, the Congregation found it necessary to relinquish ownership to a community association, the Green Mountain Club. In 1909 the association disbanded and turned ownership over to the town.
During the ensuing years, the building was used for Town Meetings, plays, dances and basketball games. Two additions were also made to the building. A large stage was added to the back of the building and a porch and vestibule to the front which altered the original Greek Revival style to what is now termed "Vermont Vernacular".
In 1973 the Board of Selectmen leased the building to the Whitingham Historical Society.

Maryland, Silver Spring
The first decades of this century saw Silver Spring transformed from a 19th century rural village into an early 20th century residential community and center of commerce. Major E. Brooke Lee and Captain Frank L. Hewitt, returning World War I veterans, were influential in laying out the first subdivisions in Silver Spring during the 1920s and establishing major commercial and civic institutions.

One of the earliest and most substantial buildings to be constructed along Georgia Avenue was the first National Guard Armory. It was built in 1914 for Company K of the 1st Maryland Infantry. It has been remodeled and now houses the Silver Spring Volunteer Fire Department.

Did Remington Live Here?
No. But he loved the St. Lawrence River and his wife lived here for a time after his death. He painted in his studio on an island in Chippewa Bay he called "Ingleneuk." The North Country, where he grew up and is buried, remained home for Remington even though he left the area when he was in his teens.

But Didn't He Paint Cowboys?
Although Remington was famous for his western paintings and sculpture, the inspiration he gained from the Northern New York landscape stimulated many of his well-known works.
