Federal Building (United States Courthouse)

New York, Saint Lawrence County, Ogdensburg

In 1856, the City of Ogdensburg petitioned the U.S. Treasury Department to construct an imposing Federal building that would suitably reflect Ogdensburg's importance as northern New York's leading social and commercial center.

This structure was built between 1867 and 1870 after the design of Alfred B. Mullett (1834-1890) at a cost of $265,000. The neo-classical scheme, based on Palladian design, remains an important example of nineteenth-century civic architecture. Built of Berea sandstone and characterized by interior structural and decorative elements of iron, the three-story building measures one hundred-twenty by sixty feet.

In addition to its architectural significance, this structure housed the post office, a federal courtroom, and offices of the collector of Internal Revenue and the special agent of the U.S. Treasury Department. A bonded warehouse was located in the basement.

President Ulysses S. Grant attended a public reception here on August 7, 1872.

This building serves as the oldest active Post Office in New York State and is among the oldest in the United States.

Baltimore Street Facade

Pennsylvania, Adams County, Gettysburg
341 Baltimore well represents the evolutionary style of many Gettysburg buildings. This three story front building, built in the 1890’s, replaced the original one story wooden structure that stood during the battle and dates back to the 1820’s.
The original wooden structure was purchased in 1859 by William Homan, a shoemaker, who added to the house as his family grew. Notice the South Street middle portion of this building. William Homan added a two story brick building to the wooden front in 1862. These two structures survived their precarious position in “No man’s land” between Union and Confederate lines as the battle raged from July 1 through July 3, 1863.
And the house continued to evolve during the 20th century with the addition of a rear portion and a third floor. Otmar Carli, famous restorationist whose portfolio includes the Gettysburg Courthouse and buildings in Europe, owned this property for a time and added his own unique touches.

Guri Endresen-Rosseland

Minnesota, Kandiyohi County, near Willmar

This monument has been placed to honor Guri Endresen-Rosseland and other early settlers of the Solomon Lake community. The settlers were predominately immigrants from Hardanger, Norway. Among the special characteristics of these pioneers were their courage and faith in Almighty God.

No one of them exemplified these characteristics more than Guri Endresen-Rosseland whose heroic deeds have resulted in her being acclaimed one of the most outstanding heroines of the nation. The State of Minnesota has recognized her heroism by erecting a monument alongside her grave. This monument is located in this cemetery.

During the Sioux Indian Uprising of 1862, a band of Indians attacked the Endresen cabin, killing the husband, Lars, and a son, Endre. Guri Endresen escaped with her infant daughter, Anna, by hiding in the cellar. After the Indians left, she hitched the family oxen to a cart and set out with her child for refuge at Forest City, some thirty miles away. Enroute she stopped at the homes of other settlers, attending to the needs of those wounded in the massacre. Some she took with her. All travel was by darkness.

Following the submission of Chief Little Crow and his warriors, Guri returned to the family homestead to rebuild her home. The cabin and graves are preserved in the Guri Endresen Cabin Site, located two miles west of the church at the end of the marked trail.

The Vikor Lutheran Congregation was organized at the Endresen cabin in 1871. It was named after the Vikor Church in Norway which was built by Lars Endresen.

This plaque has been place in this centennial
year of the Sioux Uprising in the State of Minnesota
by the Vikor Memorial Association and the
Council of Bygdelags, June, 1962.

Utah, Juab County, Nephi
Constructed in 1893 by Oscar M. Booth, this house is an excellent example of the Queen Anne architectural style in Utah. Some identifying features of the home include its side-hall plan, asymmetrical massing, long wrap-around porch, and the octagonal tower with conical roof. Mr. Booth was a local carpenter and builder who is best known in the Nephi area for his design of the Whitmore Mansion, listed on the National Register. It is also reported that in addition to the work Booth did in Nephi, he also worked in the Avenues in Salt Lake City during the 1890s. He was born in 1868 in Utah and continued his building activities, primarily in Juab County, until his death in 1944. Mr. Booth, along with his wife rose, owned this home until 1897, when it was then sold to another local resident of Nephi. The home retains its historic integrity and is a contributing resource within the city of Nephi.

The Old Mill Wheel

Utah, Juab County, Nephi
In 1859, John Hoile established a flour gristmill at First South between First and Second East. The mill consisted of a small one-story frame building. On June 20, 1870, the mill was bought by John Hague who operated it until he died in 1900. The mill sat idle until 1907 when it was purchased by the Juab Mill and Elevator Company. They immediately enlarged the mill's manufacturing capacity by adding a three-story brick structure.

This wheel is the third and last wheel used at the millsite. A wooden flume or millrace, raised 16 feet high on stilts, carried water from Salt Creek at a place between Third and Fourth East. The force of the flow turned the wheel which powered the whole mill. During the 1920s, the Juab Mill and Elevator Company bought the Nephi Mill and Manufacturing Company located at First North and Second West. From the time on, flour was milled at the Nephi Mill and Manufacturing Company, and the Old Mill operated as a feed mill, manufacturing poultry feed and chopping and grinding grain.

Activities came to an end at the original site in 1949 when both mills were sold.

Juab Co. Jail

Daughters of Utah Pioneers Marker

Prisoners from Juab county were first held in the basement of the Social Hall that stood on the corner of Center Street and Second East in Nephi. The next jail was a sturdy frame building built of thick heavy planks painted red located directly south and west of the old courthouse.

This Juab County Jail was built in the Territory of Utah four years before Utah became a state. The contract for construction of this jail was awarded July 13, 1892, to Pauley Jail Building and Manufacturing Company, St. Louis, Missouri, for $8,916. This two-story brick building is unique with iron cages and interior ceiling of heavy metal similar to a ship. Occupants through the years have known sorrow, repentance and remorse. Some were filled with bitterness and revenge. Suffice it to say that the old jail served the purpose for which it was constructed and remained in use until 1974.

This Museum and Community Center consists of part of the old Juab County Court House, the jail and a pioneer implement building known as the Brough Building. Pioneer memorabilia are kept and displayed in this complex.

Division of State History Marker
Built by the Pauley Jail Building and Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Missouri, in 1892, the Juab County Jail played a central role in county law enforcement activities. Located adjacent to the county courthouse in Nephi, the building served as a territorial jail until Utah was granted statehood in 1896. It was the principal jail in the county until March 1974, when the Tri-county Detention Center was opened in Nephi. The Juab County Jail, with its two-story height and intact interior, is one of the largest and best-preserved late-nineteenth-century jails remaining in Utah.
This brick rectangular building with a sandstone foundation and a hip roof exhibits typical Late Victorian detailing such as the brick segmental arches over the windows and doors and a band of corbelled brick just below the eaves. The only significant alteration is the c. 1915 addition of a concrete, basement-level heating plant and accompanying large brick chimney attached to the north side of the jail. The top of the chimney has a simple geometric designs in cast concrete, reflecting the Prairie School style of architecture that was popular during the early twentieth century.
