California, Kern County, Tehachapi
The "T-Hacha-P" logo was taken from an early fruit crate label. The steam powered combine shown is followed by a horse drawn water wagon, with Tehachapi Peak in the background. Jake Jacobsen, a former mayor and civic leader, along with his brother Rolf, built this seed-packing shed.

The funnel still seen on the roof of the building, directed seeds into a hopper, which you can see inside the building. In the past, Tehachapi has seen the production of seeds for many diverse crops.

Maryland, Anne Arundel County, Annapolis
On March 25, 1655, colonial Governor William Stone landed Maryland militia at the Puritan settlement of Providence, located at the mouth of the Severn River. He planned to subdue the settlers who had asserted their independence from the government in St. Mary's City. The Puritan militia defeated Stone's forces and secured temporary control of the colony, ruling Maryland until 1658, when an agreement restored proprietary authority to Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore.

Wandering Warblers

$

New Jersey, Monmouth County, Wall Township

To the careful observer, warblers are delightful splashes of color that decorate the foliage in the spring and fall. Although several species breed here in the summer, most warblers only stop briefly in New Jersey during their migration from breeding to wintering grounds. As many as thirty species can be seen in New Jersey during the spectacular fall migration.

Warblers over-winter in the tropics. In the spring, they follow rivers, coastlines, and mountain ranges northward, aided by the sun and stars. Most warblers that pass through New Jersey breed in Canada and the northern parts of the United States. At the breeding grounds, they nest and raise their young. Before the cool autumn temperatures set in, warblers return to the tropics.

Declines in songbird populations, including warblers, have been noticed in many parts of their range. Recent research suggests that it may be linked to habitat loss: destruction of tropical forests where they over-winter, fragmentation of Northern breeding forests, and the steady loss of coastal forests where migrants rest along their journey.

The Garden State

New Jersey, Monmouth County, Wall Township

When Europeans first came to the eastern shores of North America they encountered a vast, virgin forest that seemingly stretched westward forever. First viewed as barriers and places for hiding, the trees soon became cabins, gunstocks and cradles, wagon wheels, and eventually newsprint and prefabrications – and economic and recreational treasure.

One of the major forest classifications is called the Eastern Deciduous forest – the type to which the forests of New Jersey belong. Deciduous trees shed their leaves every year during the harshness of winter. Forty-two percent of the Garden State’s vegetation is forest trees. New Jersey’s forests sustain an abundance of wildlife and plants – giving credit to its well deserved nickname.

Forest Composition

Ever wonder why some trees will grow in one place but not in another? Look below the forest canopy to discover one reason. New Jersey, for example, is divided into five physiographic regions, each with its own unique topography and soils. Topography, moisture, and soil are some of the factors that help determine the types of trees that grow in each region. The sandy soils of the inner and outer coastal plains provide nutrients for vegetation different from those found in the higher, rocky soils of the piedmont and highlands. What other factors and conditions might determine the types of trees growing here?

Ohio, Defiance County, Hicksville
In 1838 the honorable Mr. A.P. Edgerton, agent for the Hicks Land Company of New York, erected this building as his headquarters from which he sold land to the first settlers of this community. It became the property of the building and loan company, who, in 1989, deeded it to the Johnson Memorial Library. The building was then moved to this library site.

A memorial gift from William and Lyndall Coulter enabled the library directors to renovate this historic property for appropriate use.

The Road to Zion

Nebraska, Platte County, Columbus

In 1847, Brigham Young led 143 men, 2 women, and 3 children west along the Platte River, then southwest into Utah. By the 1860s, an exodus of more than 70,000 other Mormons followed this trail to their "New Zion." Today, a marked 1,624-mile auto tour route closely parallels their historic trek from the Midwest to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake.

The Mormon pioneers set up communities and ferry crossings along the trail to assist later wagon trains going to and from Utah. From 1856-60, European converts pushed and pulled handcarts loaded with 500 pounds of supplies to Salt Lake City. After 1860, the Mormon church sponsored oxen-drawn wagons.

Duncan

Nebraska, Platte County, Duncan

The history of Duncan, Nebraska has been closely associated with overland routes through the Platte and Loup River valleys. The Mormon Trail passed nearby during the mid-19th Century and the first transcontinental railroad was completed to this point in 1866. The early settlers in the area included Swiss and Polish immigrants. In June, 1869, Cherry Hill Post Office was established here. Two years later, in 1871, officials of the Union Pacific Railroad platted the town of Jackson on this site.

In 1879, Jackson was selected as the location for the junction of the Union Pacific and its subsidiary, the Omaha, Niobrara, and Black Hills Railroad. Union Pacific financier Jay Gould reportedly chose Jackson for the junction because he was angered at the nearby town of Columbus which had promoted construction of a rival railroad into the region. However, an ice jam destroyed the Loup River bridge on the Omaha, Niobrara and Black Hills line in 1881, and the tracks were later relocated to join the Union Pacific at Columbus.

In 1880, Jackson was renamed Duncan and the Village was formally incorporated on March 4, 1913.

Lime Kiln

Maryland, Baltimore County, Cockeysville
Lime Kilns in this area were built into hillsides for support. A fire was maintained at the bottom of the pit and crude lime from a nearby source was thrown on top of it. The heat from the fire would separate the pure powder form of the lime from the other rocks and minerals. Lime in Balt. Co. was used to white-wash buildings, as a disinfectant, and poured over dead bodies to slow decay. Although the exact age of this kiln is not known, it probably was constructed in the late 1800's.
