The Washington School is significant as a Public Works Administration-funded school in the Art Moderne style by architect John Flad. Constructed of red brick with cast stone banding, the building has unornamented wall planes, curved corners and horizontal design elements, features which define the Art Moderne style. The building is significant for embodying progressive educational ideals and included a gymnasium, library, and science, art and music rooms. The orthopedic wing of the school served physically handicapped children and provided physical therapy treatment rooms.

New Jersey, Monmouth County, Freehold

This monument commemorates the pivotal June 28, 1778 Battle of Monmouth which began near this site. A campaign to erect the memorial, led by Freehold native Governor Joel Parker and Major James S. Yard, began in 1877. Its cornerstone was laid on the battle’s 100th anniversary and its unveiling took place on November 13, 1884. Surrounding the 90 foot granite column are bas-reliefs sculpted by James Edward Kelly depicting Revolutionary War scenes and the seals of the 13 colonies. The figure of Columbia triumphant stands at its peak. Damaged by lightning in 1894, the original statue was replaced in 1896. Funding for construction included private donations and appropriations by the New Jersey Legislature and U.S. Congress. The family of Daniel S. Schank donated the land, ownership of which passed from the state to the County of Monmouth in 1999.

From 1929 to 1940 Arthur Brisbane made available this land as the official scout camp for Monmouth County Boy Scouts. Thousands of boys camped here enjoying the natural beauty of the woods while receiving scout training in self-reliance and kindred virtues.

This plaque commemorates the distinguished service rendered by the Scouts and Scouters of Monmouth Council, Boy Scouts of America, in the early rehabilitation of the buildings at Allaire, with the help of individuals, service clubs and fraternal organizations who were interested in the camping program of the Boy Scouts of America.

. . . . . posthumously named in honor of its most successful owner and operator . . . James P. Allaire. The site today is a testimony to historic preservation and modification to leisure time activities.

Fortunately, ownership of these 3000 acres passed to caring people: first to Arthur Brisbane and then to the State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Parks and Forestry.

Allaire Village represents a significant chapter in America’s industrial growth from the War of 1812 to the Civil War. It typifies the struggle of one man to seek his fortune in business only to find his next day spent paying for the last one.

The village, today, is operated by the State of New Jersey in conjunction with Allaire Village Inc., a non-profit organization.

Enjoy your visit to the Village Complex. Walk in the footsteps of James P. Allaire and imagine life as it must have been.

The Villasur Expedition

Nebraska, Platte County, Columbus

In June 1720 a Spanish military force led by Sir Pedro de Villasur left Santa Fe, New Mexico, to gather information on French activities near the Missouri River. The force included 45 veteran soldiers, 60 Pueblo Indian allies, some Apache scouts, and a priest. Indian trader Juan L'Archeveque, and Jose Naranjo, a black explorer who had reconnoitered Nebraska's Platte River, accompanied the expedition.

Near present Schuyler, Nebraska, Villasur's command met large numbers of Pawnee and Oto Indians who were allies of the French. The Spanish withdrew to approximately this area and camped. The next morning, August 14, 1720, the Indians attacked. Within minutes Villasur, L'Archeveque, Naranjo, 3l soldiers, 11 Pueblo Indians, and the priest lay dead. The survivors fled across the prairie and reached Santa Fe September 6. Spanish losses were the greatest suffered by Europeans in any battle with Indians on Nebraska soil.

The Villasur expedition was the deepest official penetration of the Great Plains until the 1790s, when Spanish fur traders ascended the Missouri River. After 1720 no Spanish military force reached Nebraska country until the 1806 Melgares Expedition visited the Pawnee village on the Republican River.

The Manasquan Floodplain

New Jersey, Monmouth County, Wall Township

Sediments deposited by the Manasquan River provide moist, fertile soils for plants. Ironwood, ash, and hickory trees flourish. Many of the wildflowers bloom before the tree leaves block the sunlight – producing a striking display of spring color.

Millions of years of erosion and flooding helped form the valley. Heavy rains would periodically cause the river to overflow, spreading silt, soil, and water onto the valley floor.

These floodplains slow the momentum of raging floodwaters that might otherwise be more destructive downstream. Look around for signs of flooding, such as uprooted trees and exposed roots.

Sidebar : >
Animals of the Floodplain

To survive, animals must be able to escape the raging floods. Some climb trees, some run to higher ground, and others simply fly away. Deer raccoons, birds, frogs, and water snakes are some of the residents here.

John Snowden Memorial

I have been imprisoned and now I am about to shake hands with time and welcome eternity, for in a few hours from now, I shall step out of time into eternity to pay the penalty of a crime I am not guilty of. God knows that I am telling the truth, and after I have been hanged, I am asking the authorities to please continue to search for the murderer. Though I have suffered, if it would have proved to the world that I was innocent, I would have willingly gone through that awful degree again. I have offered up a prayer for you all. I want to thank everybody that have spent their time and money to help me. Through their song and prayer my soul was made alive and I am leaving on the everlasting Arm of Jesus. I could not leave this world with a lie in my mouth.

Growing up on South Street near the county courthouse, George Phelps' boyhood dream was to be a police officer. After WWII, Army 1st Lt. Phelps saw his dream come true when County Exective Joseph W. Alton appointed him, the first African American, to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Phelps dedicated his life to community service. He initiated and initially funded OIC, Opportunities Industrialization Corporation, that has benefited 8290 people by 2008 through work skills training. Together with Orlando Ridout IV, he led the effort to restore the Maynard Burgess House, owned by free black families from whom he is descended. His leadership refurbished the 1884 Brewer's Hill Cemetery, the City's first African American cemetery. These programs continue as part of the Annapolis quality of life we enjoy today.

Songs Of The Season

New Jersey, Monmouth County, Wall Township

Migrating songbirds fill the air with light melodies in the Spring and Fall. These international travelers stop to rest here and feed on insects and fruit during the flight from their tropical wintering habitat to their northern breeding habitat. Some will remain here to nest. Most can be seen along the northbound route from April to June and southbound from August to September.

You might be surprised to learn that the number of songbirds is in decline. Each year fewer birds return. Habitat destruction is a major contributing factor.

The reduced numbers may be a warning that the existence of these species could someday be in peril. To ensure that their beautiful songs will never be silenced, we need to protect the wetlands, fields, and woodlands of New Jersey’s coastal habitats as well as those along the songbird migration route.

During migration, songbirds fly using a technique called bounding flight. The bird vigorously flaps its wings for a brief period to gain altitude, then folds its wings for a short descent, only to repeat the process over again. Although it is constantly rising and falling, the bird appears to maintain a constant altitude overall.

A Limited Resource
Water covers almost three quarters of the earth’s surface, but only three percent of it is fresh water, and less than one third of that is usable. The remaining fresh water is locked up as snow and ice at the polar regions.

All living things depend on water to survive. It is important to realize that our water resources are limited, and that we impact water quality and availability in subtle and sometimes far reaching ways. For example, mercury (a poisonous metal) is released into the atmosphere as a by-product of burning coal, and can be carried by the wind for hundreds of miles before raining down with rain or snow and contaminating streams, rivers, lakes, the ocean, and ultimately the seafood we may eat.

Half of the rainwater falling on the 2,400 square mile Pine Barrens region seeps through the porous soil into the Cohansey Aquifer. Surface runoff and seepage from this aquifer are the sources for all of Southern New Jersey’s rivers flowing to the sea and Delaware Bay. The Cohansey and its deeper counterpart, the Kirkwood, also supply most of Southern New Jersey’s drinking water.
