Old Cutler Road

Florida, Miami-Dade County, Cutler Bay
Old Cutler Road owes its name to the former town of Cutler, a farming community founded by William Fuzzard in the late 1800s. The town was named after Dr. William Cutler of Massachusetts who visited the area around 1880 and encouraged Fuzzard and others to settle here. In 1883, Fuzzard, with the help of other residents of Cutler, cut a path north and east through a wilderness of pine rocklands and hardwood hammocks to the Village of Coconut Grove. The road followed a natural limestone ridge along Biscayne Bay, and established the first overland route connecting Coconut Grove and Cutler. It was subsequently widened to a wagon trail and was declared a public road in 1895. The road became known as Cutler Road, later as Ingraham Highway, and still later as Old Cutler Road. Today, Old Cutler Road, which follows a somewhat altered course, maintains the appearance and atmosphere of a country road, and provides a tangible reminder of the heritage of the Miami area. Old Cutler Road was declared a State Historical Highway in 1974 by the Florida Legislature.

The Redland District, named for the color of its soil, was settled in the early 1900s. Dan Roberts, Claude Jenkins and George Kosel were the first pioneers to file homestead claims in Redland. The pioneer community was concentrated along Redland Road. By 1912, early settlers had built several churches, a school, a small store and the Pioneer Guild Hall. The Redland Fruit and Spice Park is one of the oldest and unique parks in the county system. It displays a large variety of exotic fruit bearing trees. The Merritt Residence, located at 24890 Redland Road, was built in 1930. The Merritts restored the house after Hurricane Andrew and won the 1994 Florida Trust Award for Preservation.

As the militia – local citizens—defended this road, then known as the Bladensburg or Washington turnpike, from approaching British troops in 1814, three historical figures stood in the thick of the battle at or near this point: President Madison, Secretary of State James Monroe, and Francis Scott Key. They were making and preparing plans for the battle alongside commanding General William Winder and Secretary of War John Armstrong.

Francis Scott Key was here acting as an aide to American General Walter Smith of the Georgetown militia and helping direct positions of troops. After the battle, Key traveled to Baltimore with American agent for prisoners of war John Stuart Skinner to seek the release of William Beanes of Upper Marlboro. While waiting aboard the truce ship in Baltimore's harbor, Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry and was inspired to write what would become America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."

The Methodist Church in Singapore
Built between 1870 – 75, the Middle Road Church was first known as The Christian Institute. Here, young men gathered for recreational activities and daily worship made possible by Charles Phillips, its trustee. He invited the Methodists to use it from 1885 until it was formally transferred to them in 1892. It housed the Methodist Girl’s School until 1900 and was shared with a group of Straits Chinese formed by Methodist missionaries in 1890.

When it was officially inaugurated as the Malay Church in 1894, it became the first Straits Chinese Methodist Church in Singapore. It remained here until 1929 when it moved to Kampong Kapor and is now known as the Kampong Kapor Methodist Church.

A fortress wall is a structure made of stone or earth for the purposes of protecting the designated area and using that area as the administrative and military center.

The Namdo stone fortress stands on flat ground which encircles Namdong Village. It is said that this was build by the Sambyeolcho forces to defend the coastal areas when they were stationed in Jindo during King Wonjong’s reign and it is also said that this is the very spot that the Sambyeolcho left for Jeju Island.

This fortress was reconstructed in the coastal regions and the naval forces were dispatched here in the early Joseon Dynasty to repel Japanese pirates. the then place name was Mandopo.

At the time, because the Manho (the commanding officer) was dispatched to rule this area, it came to be called the Namdoposugunmanho jinseong (a naval base in charge of Manh, ten thousand houses, at Namdopo). According to the chronicle, it was in the 20th year of King Sejong’s reign (1438) that ten thousand houses existed in this area. From this, it is believed that this mountain fortress was built afterwards.

The stone fortress is about 610m around, and 2.8 to 4.1m high. The remains of the gates and Ongseong (the outer wall to protect the fortress gate) are well preserved. Unlike the other remaining Sugunmanhijinseongs it is good state of preservation and for the reason, this fortress wall is worth being preserved. =============================================================

Orange Grove: A Small Neighborly Community

Maryland, Howard County, Elkridge
"Life was quite and serene. The difference between then and now much like the difference between the raucous blare of the Diesel horn and friendly warmth of the whistle on a distant locomotive." - Thomas Phillips, Orange Grove in 1900

Orange Grove was once home to more than a dozen flour mill workers and their families. Prior to 1905, nine houses and an combination one-room church/school lined the river. Cows grazed in the pasture where the pavilion now stands, each home owned by Patapsco Flour Mill Company, which operated a mill across the river.

Neighbors gathered at the village water pump not only to collect drinking water, but also to exchange news. The minister, teacher, doctor, butcher, and produce grocer traveled on foot, horseback or horse-drawn wagon to service the community or sell their wares.

Of the town's 41 people in 1900, 19 were children. Thomas Phillips, who grew up here, reminisces how the river valley was a magnificent playground with opportunities for mischief and fun. Children enjoyed snow-sledding and ice skating on the lake created by the mill's dam. One of the favored pastimes was "chestnut hunting."

As you wander through the park today, imagine the different sights, sounds and smells of Orange Grove when it was a mill town.

Back to Nature in the Patapsco Valley

"[On] any weekend [you] will find from 20 to 25 of our faithful band of Gypsies enjoying nature to its fullest extent ... Enjoying watching the change in foliage from week to week, taking dips in the old Patapsco river in spite of frost, getting up at 4 A. M. to watch the daybreak, walking eight miles to church in the morning and chopping wood, preparing meals, washing dishes and taking trips through the reserve during the day." - The Baltimore Sun, October 29, 1916

While the Patapsco Valley had proved well-suited for industrial development in the 18th and 19th centuries, it has proved ideal for recreational use in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Patapsco Valley's transformation into a public park began in 1907 when Catonsville resident John M. Glenn donated 43 acres of his Hilton Estate to the Maryland State Board of Forestry.

State Forester Fred W. Besley recognized the valley's potential as a public park. By promoting the Patapsco as a park, he hoped to lure Baltimore residents out of their hot row homes into the cooler, tree-covered river valley. He hoped to show them firsthand the benefits of forest conservation, and he chose to do it right here in Orange Grove, along the Cascade Branch that tumbles down the hill before you.

By 1913, families were riding the railroad or driving on backcountry roads to picnic and camp near the river. Some visited for an afternoon, others roughed it for six months. Anyone could camp in the park for free, provided they observed the strict fire regulations and registered with the State Forester's Office, or the B&O railroad.

From these humble origins sprang Patapsco Valley State Park, Maryland's first state park.

S T Goth Memorial

United Kingdom, Lancashire, Fleetwood
This is the funnel of the trawler Goth which disappeared in a fierce storm off the North Cape of Iceland in December, 1948. There were 21 men onboard who had hoped to return from the fishing grounds to spend Christmas with their families.

Deckhand Ernest Parker had been married for just two weeks. His best man, John Tandy left behind a wife and baby. Many of the young crewmen had survived wartime service and so had the Goth. Built in 1925, the ship was a coal-fired steam trawler. After working from Hill, the Goth became a naval vessel and was later bought by Wyre Trawlers of Fleetwood. The funnel has been painted in the firm's colours. The ship was due to be re-named Wyre Gallant.

For nearly 50 years, the wreck of the Goth lay undisturbed on the seabed until Icelandic trawler Helga came fishing one day and tangled the funnel in the nets.

Skipper Vidar Benediktsson took the funnel to Reykjavik and it was traced back to the Goth by registration numbers marked on it and the outline of a house flag design from the ship's Hull days.

A chain of goodwill transported the maritime icon back to Fleetwood and relatives of the crewmen held an emotional Service of Remembrance at the Fisherman's Mission Chapel.

And an amazing coincidence was revealed. The last radio message from the stricken ship reported that the Goth was trying to seek shelter in Adalvik Bay. At the same time, in the village of Holmavik, Skpper Benediktsson was born -- during the storm which claimed the Goth and her men.

Relatives who had lost fathers, husbands and brothers in the disaster wanted the funnel to become part of a memorial -- not just for their loved ones but for all the Fleetwood fishermen who lost their lives in the very dangerous job of commercial fishing during peace and war. Fleetwood was once Britain's third biggest fishing port but the industry is much declined.,

The memorial plans fell victim to many problems and disappointments but the little group never lost faith that one day their hopes would bear fruit. The memorial was unveiled on 15 December, 2006, by Bill Edwards, chairman of the Fleetwood Goth Funnel Memorial Project and son of Bosun John Edwards.

Perhaps this battered chunk of cast iron is no thing of beauty. But it survives as a reminder of the Fleetwood fishing community and a way of life which is remembered for courage, comradeship, generosity and good humour. It stands as a tribute to Fleetwood fishermen who did not return from the deep and to their families left behind on the shore.

The Fleetwood Goth Funnel Memorial Project Group thanks all those who made the memorial possible including the many Fleetwood people who contributed to the funds. The generosity of Eric Wright, chairman of Eric Wright Group created the memorial with help from painting contractors R J Clarke and Fox Brothers Crane Hire. It was placed here by permission of Asda Stores following free storage by Associated British Ports. This area of Fleetwood was once a busy part of the dockland world and fishing community.

Old Callaway One-Room School House

Florida, Bay County, Callaway
The Callaway School House was built in 1911 (two years prior to the creation of Bay County in 1913) on the SW corner of Beulah Avenue and Letohattchee Street. Callaway had been surveyed and platted in 1908 by Pitt Milner Callaway for whom the community is named. At that time students had to walk several miles through woods and across a small stream to Parker for instruction. “Grandma” Hettina Ettie Fox, who believed every child should have the opportunity to learn to read, spearheaded the drive to build a community school. Ella Callaway Carlisle donated the school’s land. The Washington County School Board, assisted by donations from the community, constructed the school. The first teacher was Kate McMillan. Although serving primarily as a school, it became a social center for the community, hosting church services, socials, Christmas parties, and as a polling place. After the school closed in 1936, the building was used as a church and later as a residence. In 1984, the school was sold to the City of Callaway for one dollar with the stipulation that it be preserved. The building was moved a short distance to John B. Gore Park and was restored by the Callaway Historical Society, Inc.

Holmes County, noted for agriculture and timber, was created in 1848. The first county seat was at Hewett's Bluff, later known as Bear Pen. Cerro Gordo and Westville also served as county seat. Bonifay, the present site, was selected in 1905. Controversy surrounds the county's name. One claim credits a North Carolinian name Holmes who settled in the area around 1830. Another contends it was named for an Indian chief who had been given the English name of Holmes.

Keith Cabin

Florida, Holmes County, Pittman
In 1880, William Thomas Keith (1856-1949) homesteaded ten acres upon which this house stands. In 1886 he filed a homestead entry with the U.S. Public Land Office and in the fall of that year built this cabin that became home for himself, his wife, mother, and eight children. It became the focus of a cotton and tobacco farm that eventually grew to more than 190 acres. By 1893, improvements included a plaza, smokehouse, corn crib, enclosed shed rooms, and a well. The Keith Cabin was originally built as a one-room, “Louisiana Roof”- style log structure with a wraparound porch, a fireplace, and a separate kitchen. This style of architecture is a rare form of 19th century construction found only in the Gulf States from east Texas to the Florida Panhandle. It is characterized by front and rear porches formed by long logs that extend beyond the main block of the house at each gable to support the broad roof overhangs. Keith served with the Home Guard and was a skilled farmer, lumberjack, mail carrier, store merchant, and medical practitioner. His life and home are excellent examples of the rural lifestyle of early Holmes County and Northwest Florida. The Keith Cabin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
