Quebec, Ville-Marie, Montreal

This imposing basilica, constructed from 1824 to 1829 and completed in the early 1840s, was the first significant example of Gothic Revival style in Canada. Built as a parish church to designs by Irish American architect James O’Donnell, it is an outstanding example of the style’s early Romantic phase, characterized by the application of medieval features such as pointed arches, battlements, and pinnacles to a classically influenced, symmetrical form. The use of the Gothic Revival for such an important building heralded the prominence the style would have in Canadian architecture.

On February 23, 1854, William C. McKinney, James W. Throckmorton, John A. Throckmorton, and Joseph Wilcox set aside twenty-five acres for the town of Mantua, which was conceived as a site for Mantua Seminary. Proceeds from the sale of town lots provided funds for the school. The town plat consisted of forty-eight city blocks surrounding a town square. To help ensure a proper environment for the school, deeds for town lots prohibited gambling, horse racing, prostitution and the sale of alcohol.

Mantua Lodge No. 209 A.F. & A.M. organized in 1857, and the Masons first met on the second story of Walcott's store. A post office was established in Mantua in 1858, and E.B. Rollins was appointed as the first postmaster. On October 21, 1858, McKinney, James W. Throckmorton and Wilcox met with Mantua citizens to establish rules for the co-educational Mantua Seminary, and a building was constructed just outside of town for the use of the seminary and the Masonic Lodge. Classes were first held in 1860 and by 1868, eighty pupils were enrolled. Liberty Christian Church was established in 1846 and a Methodist congregation was formed the next year.

In 1872 the Houston and Texas Central Railroad laid tracks approximately 1.5 miles east of Mantua, and the new town of Van Alstyne was formed along the tracks. Almost immediately, the residents and businesses of Mantua relocated to the new town. Mantua's post office was closed in 1873, the Mantua Seminary last held classes during the early 1880s and the churches relocated to neighboring towns. Today, only Mantua Cemetery and Mantua Road remain as symbols of the vanished community.

Missouri, Cedar County, Stockton

(side 1)
Here where the Ozark Highland borders on the Western Prairie region of Missouri, Cedar County was organized in 1845. The name is for the trees along Cedar Creek. Stockton, the county seat, was platted in 1846 on land given by Zimri and Marian Crabtree was first named Lancaster. Another town in Mo. also took this name, so Cedar Countians called their town Fremont until, displeased with political views of Gen. John C. Fremont, they took the name honoring Mexican War Commander R.F. Stockton in 1859.

Cedar County, furnishing troops to both sides, was torn by violence in the Civil War. In Aug., 1862, Union Majors Douglas Dade and Samuel Montgomery drove Confed. Col. J.T. Coffee from Stockton and on July 11, 1863, Confed. Major T.R. Livingston and Union Lt. W.A. McMinn were killed in an affray there. Gen. J.O. Shelby routed a Federal garrison and burned the courthouse on Oct. 5, 1863.

The present courthouse in Stockton is a handsome monolithic concrete structure. It was dedicated in 1940. The first courthouse, 1855-63, was replaced by a second in 1867 which was torn down in 1940. (See other side ) (side 2)
(Continued from other side) Cedar County, 317,440 acres of woodland and prairie, is a livestock, grain, and dairy area. Osage tribes ceded the region in 1808 but Indians roamed in the county into the 1830's and some 95 mounds and a village site remain in Cedar County. First settlers were John Crisp, Robert Graham, Thomas English, and a "Mr." Crump in 1832. They located two miles east of Stockton where a big hollow sycamore gave them partial shelter. Early settlers came largely from Tennessee.

In Cedar County is El Dorado Springs, one of Missouri's health resorts. Mineral springs were discovered by the Joshua Hightower family and a town laid out there by N.H. and W.P. Cruce in 1881. To the south, about the same time Jerico Springs grew up near another spring. A number of Germans and Bohemians settled in that area. The spring in Stockton's City Park issues from a cave which underlies the town.

Stockton is the birthplace of the noted veterinarian J.W. Connaway (1859-1947; and soldier, congressman, Lieutenant Governor of Missouri Joseph J. Gravelly (1828-72) lived in Cedar County.

Paso Robles’ First Jail

California, San Luis Obispo County, Paso Robles
By the mid-1880s, the population of Paso Robles had increased to a level where a dedicated building to house criminals was needed. On September 20, 1887, Paso Robles Leaderran a story about a Saturday-night drunken brawl where weapons were drawn but no shots were fired. Those involved were locked up in a boxcar but they set it on fire and escaped.

Two years later another article was printed that basically stated the town constable would not arrest drunks because there was no place to put them; a jail was sorely needed. Criminals had to be taken to San Miguel or Templeton. Through various donations of material and labor, a 2-cell jail was built that faced east near 12th Street, just east of the railroad tracks. Each cell had a ball and chain. The doors were wooden with one-inch diameter ventilation holes and the hinges and clasps were forged by hand. No basic services of any kind seem to have been included. In June 1889, the jail was finished and remained in use until 1914.

Even though constructed “strong enough to hold an elephant, ” the roof eventually cracked, the building fell into disarray and was finally torn down in 1965. Somehow, the left door was saved and equally amazing, remained safe for all these years, as well as an original ball and chain.

The 2009 Museum Board of Directors elected to recreate, as near as possible, the old jail using the door and a few old photographs as starting points. In March, Mr. Will Webster donated $6000 to launch the project. The jail’s design was slightly modified to allow visitors more access. The overall size of 10’x14’ with completely separate cells is almost perfect. While the original jail was supposed to have 2 windows - each 8”x10” - photographs only show one. For easier viewing, this jail has 2 larger windows - one on each side, instead of on the rear wall. Similarly, there was no electricity in the original jail but for safety, a small light is inside each cell. Original bricks were handmade, most likely at a brick factory where Blake’s Hardware is now, at 1701 Riverside Avenue. Over 20 or more brick samples were evaluated before deciding on “period-looking” bricks made in W. Jordan, Utah. Wood to make the second door, doorjamb and roof beams is approximately 100 years old and came from the Hodel family ranch in southern Monterey County. More than 50 individuals, volunteers and local businesses raised $16,000 in cash and in-kind donations and provided the labor for this project.

Ask a museum docent to show you the jail exhibit inside the building.

Lytle Creek Canyon

Lytle Creek Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains has a long and interesting history. It is named for Andrew Lytle, who served as a company commander in the famed Mormon Battalion during the Mexican War. Lytle was among the earliest settlers of the town of San Bernardino, where he later served as mayor. The canyon contains the North, Middle, and South Forks of Lytle Creek, a major tributary of the Santa Ana River. It also is home to Bonita Falls, which consists of three separate drops, making it the second highest cataract in Southern CA. Just east of here is the San Andreas Fault, where a major earthquake occurred in 1857.

The earliest recorded visitors to the canyon were Serrano Indians who lived nearby. During the Mission Period (1771-1846), the area was home to vast Spanish and Mexican Land Grants. Mormon Colonists camped at the mouth of the canyon in 1851 while negotiating to purchase a site for the City of San Bernardino, which was a Mormon Colony until the settlers were called home to Salt Lake City in 1857. In the 1860s gold was discovered in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino ranges, resulting in an influx of miners. Tremendous floods ravaged the canyon in 1862 and again in 1938. Today Lytle Creek Canyon is home to the historic communities of Scotland, Happy Jack, and Tally's. The 2010 Census showed a total population of 701.
