This building is constructed of locally made soft bricks and originally housed three separate businesses. The east section was home to a variety of grocery stores, a jewelry store, a Skelgas appliance store, and a plumbing and heating business. In the 1910's and 1920's, a watch repairman had a workbench set up in the front window and passersby could stop and watch him work. A realty office and an apartment were located on the second floor.

The center section of the building has contained a hardware store with a tin shop in back, a furniture store, a millinery and music shop, and a grocery and meat market. In 1939, the Ben Franklin Store opened in this part of the building, then expanded to the west in 1941 and to the east in 1978.

In the late 1800's, a business in the west two-thirds of the building was originally a lodge hall for the Pythian Sisters and the Knights of Pythias. It was remodeled into apartments after World War II.

John Wayne's father, Clyde Morrison, worked for Smith Drug Store in this building around 1905-1910. Earlier records indicate the building housed a harness shop, a hardware store and a tin shop as well.

In 1916, a jewelry store occupied this structure. Movies were shown here in the mid-1920s. By 1947, R. M. Harrison Co. operated a variety store in this building. In the early 1950s the Harrison store traded locations with the Woody-Thompson shoe store two buildings to the west.

In 1959, Bob Walters joined Ralph Thompson and this store became Thompson and Walters Shoes. Walters purchased this building in 1979 and changed the name of the shoe store to Village Bootery. From 1991 to 1993, "Bud" Hendricks operated the business. Terri and Terry Kuhns acquired the business in 1993, and added new signage and stone to the storefront in 2005. Second Hand Rose, a consignment shop, occupies the lower level.

California, Mono County, near Mammoth Lakes
Crowley Lake, widely known for its trout fishing, has yielded more than 40 tons of fish the first week of fishing season. It was named for Father Crowley, a beloved Catholic priest. who traveled this area extensively.

The White Mountain Range, to the east, is the home of the bristlecone pines, the world's oldest living thing.

The banded light and dark colored formations of the Sierra Nevada was once sediment deposited by an ancient sea and is approximately 450 million years old.

This basin is a caldera, created by the collapse of a large volcano over 500,000 years ago. the collapse was preceded by violent and tremendous explosions known as nuees ardentes, which caused the catastrophic ejection of approximately 35 cubic miles of super-heated material over an area of 450 square miles. This resulted in the extensive tableland seen to the east and south which is known as the Bishop Tuff.

Built originally as a stagecoach depot in 1866, it evolved into a railroad station in 1883 to carry freight and passengers on the Carson & Colorado Railroad line, known locally as the "Slim Princess". It served the Independence community from 1883 until it was closed during the Great Depression on June 29, 1932. The station was torn down in 1955 and the railroad line ceased operation on April 30, 1960.

It was first named Independence, then changed to Citrus and finally Kearsarge Station in 1913. Along side the station depot was a residence for the section boss and a bunkhouse for the workers.

Owens Lake Dust Mitigation Program

$

California, Inyo County, near Keeler
Owens Lake was once over 300 feet deep and part of a large ancient freshwater lake. As the climate changed over centuries, the lake began to dry up leaving behind concentrated minerals and salts. By 1905, diversion of water by farmers in the Owens Valley, coupled with drought in the region, had shrunk the lake even further to approximately 60% of what it was in the mid 1800's. In 1913, the City of Los Angeles purchased most of the water rights in the Owens Valley and completed the first Los Angeles Aqueduct to divert much of the remaining water in the Owens River south to the city of Los Angeles. As a result, the lakebed has been essentially dry since 1920.

Dust blowing from the dry lakebed became a problem for the communities surrounding Owens Lake, and its presence eventually constituted a violation of the Federal air quality dust standard. In July of 1998, the City of Los Angeles and the Great Basin United Air Pollution Control District entered into a historic agreement committing the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to mitigate the dust conditions.

This marker signifies the first phase of a dust control program - Shallow Flooding. This involves delivering water to emissive areas of the lakebed until the soil becomes thoroughly wet to the surface and is unable to emit dust.

This program is part of s series of actions in which the City of Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power have taken positive steps to protect the environment.

In 1862 this high quality deposit of dolomitic limestone was discovered. Its remorte location delayed development until 1883, when the Carson & Colorado Railroad was constructed. In 1885, Drew Haven Dunn filed a mining claim and the Inyo Marble Company began quarrying operations. The property was purchased in 1959 by Premiere Marble Products. They produced dolomite marble in several colors and its final product is widely used in terrazzo flooring, roofing, landscaping and in swimming pool and chemical filters.

Premiere Marble was purchased by its present owner F.W. Aggregates, in 1992 and continues operation to this day. It is the largest dolomite marble mine in the United States. A recent survey of the mines potential revealed that the dolomite deposit is approximatey seven miles long and 1,400 feet deep, giving it a virtual unlimited supply for many years to come. Plant superintendent, Manuel Castro has generously donated these large white dolomite rocks for Slim Princess Chapter's historic plaques for the past 35 years.
