This plaque is dedicated by the Board of Port Commissioners of the City of Oakland as a permanent tribute to the courage and foresight of these gallant airmen.
Their aeronautical exploits – starting in 1928 with the pioneering flight of the Southern Cross from Oakland to Australia and thence continued around the globe by Kingsford-Smith to complete at Oakland the aerial circumnavigation of the world – contributed greatly to the progress of aviation and demonstrated the practicability of regular transoceanic air service.

Panel one:
The Neon Boneyard Park Sign
The lettering on a neon sign is often the most memorable design component. The Neon Boneyard Park sign includes hidden reference to this aspect of the grand history of Las Vegas signage. Each letter in the word "Neon" is taken from the typography of a famous sign. The first "N" is classic Golden Nugget. The "e", from Caesars Palance, is perhaps most recognizable. The "o" is from Binion's Horseshoe, and the final "n" celebrates the Desert Inn. Each of these historic signs can be found in the Neon Museum Boneyard.

Panel two:
Neon Signs Project
The Neon Signs Project partners the Neon Museum with the City of Las Vegas to install restored signs from the Museum collecting along Las Vegas Blvd, illuminating downtown Las Vegas. In 2009, the stretch of Las Vegas Blvd. between Sahara Ave. and Washington Ave. was designated a National Scenic Byway, one of only three urban Byways in the country. The National Scenic Byways Program is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. The first sign was the Hacienda Horse and Rider, installed in 1997 at Fremont Street. Binion's Horseshoe, the Bow & Arrow Motel, and the Silver Slipper were erected in 2009.

Panel three:
The Neon Museum
The Neon Museum was established as a non-profit organization in 1996 to collect; preserve, and exhibit neon signs, the classic Las Vegas art form. The collection is housed in the famous Boneyard, with additional restored signs located at the Fremont Street outdoor gallery and along Las Vegas Blvd. as part of the National Scenic Byways "Neon Signs" project. The Museum celebrates the distict architectural and design innovation of the Las Vegas neon sign.
Panel four:
The La Concha Motel Lobby
Originally located at 2955 Las Vegas Blvd. South, the sweeping Googie arches of the La Concha Motel lobby defined on era. Built in 1961 by the Doumani Family, architect Paul R. Williams was the first African-American member of the American Institude of Architects. Planned for demolition, the Doumani family instead promised the building to the Neon Museum in 2005. In 2006 the shell was relocated, and in 2007 the building was reassembled at its new home. The historic La Concha lobby now serves as the visitor center for the Neon Museum.

Early Texas River Steamers

Texas, Washington County, near Brenham
River-shipping efforts in pioneer Texas by steamboat were centered primarily on the Brazos (about 2 mi. E.), and Washington-on-the-Brazos (about 15 mi. N.) was an important distribution point for commercial interests. The Brazos flowed through most productive cotton and sugar region in Texas; steamers greatly aided shipment of these items to markets in New Orleans. The first steamer reached Washington in 1840; by 1849 its docks were busy with steamboats making regular river trips.

Between 1820-1840 settlers made journey to Texas on the Red River in steamers if the river was high enough and there were no obstructions. Buffalo Bayou, extending from Houston to Galveston Bay, was waterway traveled most often by steamers, and took over trade from Brazos River because it had better outlet to the sea. Navigation on the Trinity, Colorado, and Sabine rivers also increased inland growth and development.

While rivers in Texas seemed to offer possibilities for steamboat travel, the story of river navigation is largely one of disappointment. Most meandering rivers were too shallow, often flooded, needed clearing; many were choked with driftwood. These hazards greatly retarded economic and social development of the state. By 1865 the importance of river steamers was gone.

This bay front site originally bordered Ohlone Indian settlements. In 1820 the Spanish crown granted it to Luis Maria Peralta. In 1842 it was given to his son Antonio Maria Peralta. The area was acquired by Horace Carpenter (first mayor of Oakland), in 1852. He then founded the Oakland Waterfront Company. In 1892 Carpenter sold the site. Beginning with the Pacific Carbonic Gas Company in 1893, this site has been occupied by several important industries. In 1979, fortuitously, it was acquired by the Hon. Robert A. Schultz.

Fort Fred Steele was established in 1868 as one of a group of military posts placed along the route of the Trans-Continental Railroad to protect and support the railroad construction. Today, except for the Powder Magazine (south of the Railroad tracks), only foundations remain. The buildings are marked with metal signs indicating the original use of the building and the dotted lines on the above map closely follows the original Parade Ground Path. This post did have some unique structures. These include the stone sidewalk, part of which still exists, along Officers Row, on the west side of the post. Another interesting structure is the Stone Corral, much of which still stands. Building number 13 shows evidence of being a military structure and may have been a barracks. Remember! These structures are unsafe, DO NOT ENTER!

Jack London

California, Alameda County, Oakland

In 1886, ten year old Jack London traveled to Oakland with his family and led the rough and ready life of countless other working class lads of that era. Though he labored at menial jobs, the world of books captured his imagination at an early age and his mind remained open to new ideas and learning. Jack London’s life and career were influenced by the colorful yarns from hard-drinking sailors and risk-taking oyster pirates that he heard in Heinold’s Saloon. A year in the frozen Yukon provided additional inspiration for his writing. During his brief, brilliant career, London produced over fifty volumes of novels, essays, short stories and newspaper reports. In 1916, at the age of forty, he died as he lived.

“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot.”

Built in 1906 for Edgar R. Braley, an influential figure in early Pasadena. Braley was a well respected businessman who also served as a park, fire, and police commissioner. The Braley Building at 35 South Raymond Avenue was the former site of two earlier structures owned by Braley which housed his produce market and bicycle shop. The new building was home to Pasadena's first electric automobile dealership and was designed by C.W. Buchanan who interpreted the Chicago style detailing in the building's windows and decorative elements. The Braley Building was one of the first major rehabilitation projects in Old Pasadena and is individually listed in The National Register of Historic Places.

Among the retailers in this block were Hertel's Dry Goods, J.W. Woods (The Druggist who later became a well-known local historian), and Conrad & Hotaling, Men's Outfitters. A.C. Vroman established his first bookshop on this block in 1894. This block also was the location of Valley Union Newspaper offices and shops for a grocer, a confectioner, a baker and a jeweler.

History of the Transbay Ferry

California, Alameda County, Oakland

Ferry service between Oakland and San Francisco has played a vital role over 145 years. The earliest licensed operator was Captain Thomas Gray who started his stern-wheeler river boat, the “General Sutter”, from a landing at the foot of Broadway in the Fall of 1851. As the demand for transportation of mail, horses, wagons, passengers and cargo grew, so did the number of ferry boat services (many of “questionable reliability”). Ferry transit reached its peak in the 1930’s and then declined due to bridge construction and the popularity of automobiles. Service between Oakland and San Francisco was discontinued in the 1950’s. The present Alameda/Oakland Ferry was launched in October 1989, following the Loma Prieta earthquake. A joint project of the Port of Oakland and the City of Alameda, the service carried its one millionth passenger in June 1994 and now serves 340,000 passengers annually. The ferry began operations from the Clay Street ferry terminal in 1991.

Origins of Oakland

California, Alameda County, Oakland

In 1850, a twenty-six year old New Englander named Edson Adams set his sights on 480 acres of oak covered shore at the foot of what is now Broadway, on the banks of San Antonio Creek. Although the land was part of the Peralta family rancho he and fellow speculators, Horace Carpenter and Andrew Moon, laid out lots and planned a town. The legality of their actions would be discussed in the courts for years to come. In 1852 the State Legislature incorporated the township of Oakland. The settlement’s name was derived from “El Encinal (oak grove) de Temescal”. The boundaries of the town were the Bay on the west, 22nd street to the north, Lake Merritt on the east, and San Antonio Creek on the south. At its founding, the Town of Oakland has 75 residents. In 1996, the City of Oakland’s population was 373,242.

The building behind you was the Port of Oakland headquarters from late 1961 until 1990. An aluminum skin now covers what was a 1920s cold storage building, the Haslett Warehouse. One third of the original building was demolished to allow construction of a second tunnel to Alameda, the Webster Street Tube, which was completed in 1963. The former warehouse was remodeled in 1960, and port employees moved their offices from the Grove Street Pier to their new home in late 1961.
The area around Jack London Square was spruced up with new sidewalks, lighting and streets in 1952 to coincide with the City of Oakland’s centennial celebration. Restaurants like the Sea Wolf, later Scott’s Seafood, the Grotto, later Kincaid’s, the Showboat, a floating restaurant, were popular destinations during the early days of the Square.
Under the Phase I Master Plan, adopted by Port Commissioners in 1984, new office space, retail outlets, and parking facilities were added to the area between Clay and Franklin Streets. The work was completed in 1989-1990. Phase II Master Plan will yield greater opportunities for entertainment, shipping, and business throughout the Square.
