West Virginia, Ohio County, Wheeling
The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, designed and erected by Charles Ellet, Jr., was completed in 1849. Known as the "Gateway to the West," the bridge was the first to cross the Ohio River carrying people and products to the West along the National Road. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world, 1010 feet at the time it was constructed. The bridge held that distinction until the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883. Called "the father of American suspension bridges," it is the oldest vehicular suspension bridge in the world that is still being used.

The great 1849 suspension bridge at Wheeling extended the National Road west, bringing people and goods to the city. At the northernmost navigable part on the Ohio River, overland routes, river traffic, and railroads converged, attracting entrepreneurs who manufactured iron, steel, nails, textiles, glass, tobacco, and other goods.

In 1827, William Heathcote built this building for use as a woolen mill. In 1851, the building was sold to Phillip Sheffer and Charles Olp. Sheffer bought out Olp and in 1852, converted the mill into a grist mill. In March 1885, Israel Glatfelter bought the mill from The G.F.Seitz estate and made many improvements which increased the mill's capacity. Glatfelter sold the mill in 1918 to B.Frank and Thaddeus Owings, who along with flour, began to manufacture June Bug Feed.

In 1983, after 131 years of service, the mill ceased operating and in 1984 the building was converted into a restaurant. In December 1893, Israel Glatfelter added the front building to his mill and moved his clothing store in. This was the first building in town to have large glass display windows.

Fort Garland

Top of the Marker:
The Soldier’s Life Fort Garland housed infantry and cavalry units. During the 1870’s the famed Buffalo Soldiers—African-American cavalrymen—were also posted here. For all soldiers—and their families—life at Fort Garland was often dull, sometimes dangerous, but never easy. A civilian who visited the post remarked that despite its remoteness “frontier life suggests a poetic expansiveness, but to the soldier it usually involves a career of humdrum routine.

To protect the valley's Hispanic settlers against Indian attacks, the U.S. Army established Fort Massachusetts in 1852 near Blanca Peak, which towers just north of here. But the fort was too remote to be effective, so in 1858 the Army put up a new post -- Fort Garland -- a portion of which you see immediately across the road. Built largely of adobe, the new fort stood guard over the San Luis Valley and its people until abandoned in 1883. The Colorado Historical Society invites you to visit Fort Garland, which has been preserved as a museum.

"Totally Unique and Unexpected"

Welcome to the high elevation desert that is Great Sand Dunes! Does this landscape strike you as amazing, bizarre or totally out of place. If so, you’re not alone. For many, the unexpected combination of massive dunes surrounded by alpine peaks and a desert valley inspires awe and curiosity.

The 30 square mile dunefield before you is the most impressive part of an enormous deposit of sand stretching west, south, and north. The San Juan Mountains on the far western horizon contributed most of the sand, which was washed by mountain streams into the San Luis Valley. From there, southwesterly winds blew, bounced and pushed the grains toward the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, piling them into the tallest dunes in North America

A Landmark for People

“We can see the Dunes and the Crestone Needles from all over our ranch. When we are lost, that’s what we navigate by.”
--local rancher

Whether traveling on foot, by horseback, Model A, or the latest-model car, the dunes and mountains behind them were—and still are—used as landmarks by travelers in and around the San Luis Valley. The oldest evidence of humans in the area dates back to about 11,000 years ago. Perhaps echoing your own experience in driving here, those people probably saw the dunes as a tan blur in the distance from miles away.

On the far horizon, the San Juan Mountains rim the San Luis Valley to the west. Behind you, mountain passes through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains were used by people traveling between the San Luis Valley and communities to the east. The Medano Pass Primitive Road (4-wheel-drive, high clearance required) and the Mosca Pass trail both follow rough historic routes over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Mountains and passes were important in the formation
of the sand dunes.

You are looking at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Prevailing southwesterly winds carrying sand across the San Luis Valley were blocked by the mountains.

As the winds rose to sweep through the passes, sand was dropped.

Some storms come from the northeast and reverse the wind flow through the passes, blowing sand back toward the Dune field.

Different Life Zones Exist in the Mountains
Imagine climbing the mountain in front of you. You might notice it gets cooler as you ascend. As the temperature drops, moisture in the air condenses, precipitation increases, and creates different life zones.

The Alpine Life Zone
Only low shrubs and a few hardy plants can survive this cold, windy climate.

The Subalpine Life Zone
These dense, moist forests consist of spruce and subalpine fir trees.

The Montane Life Zone
Aspen trees mark moist locations. Ponderosa Pines are typical of drier sites in this live zone.

The Foothills Life Zone
Pinons and junipers dominate this dry shrub ecosystem.

Adobe Construction

The Casa de Aguirre, like many of Old Town’s original buildings, was constructed of adobe. Adobe bricks, flooring, roof tiles, and other materials were made locally by combining clay, sand, water and straw and pouring this mixture into wooden forms. Once the bricks and tiles were dry enough to hold their shape, the forms were removed and the blocks were left to cure in the sun. The bricks were ready after thirty days of drying time. The exterior walls of adobe houses were coated with plaster to protect them from damage by the wind, sun and rain. The present-day re-creation of the Casa de Aguirre used authentically made adobe bricks (exposed here) mortared onto an earthquake-proof substructure.

Annette McGavigan
Aged 14
Shot dead by the British Army
6 September 1971
———————
Here the innocence of a child's world contrasts vividly with the chaotic violence with which others have surrounded her. The mural commemorates fourteen year old Annette McGavigan who was shot by a British soldier in 1971, the 100th victim of the Troubles and one of the first children to be killed. The little coloured stones at her feet are objects that she was collecting for a school project. The broken gun signals a call for an end to violence. The butterfly and the crucifix are symbols of innocence and rebirth. Annette stands for all the children who have died through violence during the Troubles.

Our challenge was to take such a heart-rending event as the brutal death of a young girl and make it the plea for peace and sanity.

West Virginia, Ohio County, Wheeling
On this site stood the first Ohio County Courthouse whose cornerstone was laid in 1839 . In the 1890s, the Courthouse was razed and replaced by the Board of Trade Building and Court Theatre. Wheeling architect Edward Batee Franzheim designed the Building, which now has been honored by its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Board of Trade Building was a state-of-the-art office complex which has been home to many prominent Wheeling businesses and was erected at a cost of $170,000. The Court Theatre was expanded in the 1920s and was considered the premier theater in Wheeling which housed many vaudeville shows and plays. The Court was later converted to a movie theater and was closed in 1982.

Wheeling attorney Robert P. Fitzsimmons purchased the entire building in 1996 with his business associates, Russell Jay Guthrie, and Kay L. Guthrie. The property was fully rehabilitated and renovated under the guidance of attorney Fitzsimmons' father, Robert J. Fitzsimmons, and Kay L. Guthrie, Project Manager.

"this was a considerable Village contains about fifty houses...it is situated on the east side of the river on an elevated bank; the landing is good, just below the town and on the side big Wheeling creek emtys itself into the Ohio..." -- Meriwether Lewis, September 7, 1803.

In the fall of 1803, Captain Meriwether Lewis traveled down the Ohio River to meet Captain William Clark in Louisville, Kentucky. Along the way, he stopped here (now Wheeling West Virginia) to collect rifles and ammunition shipped overland from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In the fall, the Corps of Discovery traveled to St. Louis, Missouri and established a winter fort. In the spring, they began their trek up the Missouri River searching for an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean. After the three-year arduous expedition, they reached the Pacific Ocean in 1806. The amazing details of the journey were meticulously recorded in journals kept by Lewis and Clark.
