Virginia, Arlington County, Fort Meyer
Mary Randolph, wife of David Meade Randoph, and first person known to be buried at Arlington, was the eldest child of Thomas Mann and Ann Cary Randolph, of Tuckahoe. Her maternal grandfather was Archibald Cary, of Ampthill; Her paternal grandfather was William Randolph, of Tuckahoe. She was a direct descendant of Pocohontas; A Cousin of Thomas Jefferson; of Mary Lee Fitzhugh Custis, wife of George Washington Parke Custis, the builder of Arlington House; and of Robert E. Lee. Her brother Thomas Mann Randolph, Governor of Virginia 1819-1821, married Martha Jefferson, daughter of Thomas Jefferson. Her eldest son was William Beverley Randolph, through whom alone her line was descended. Her youngest son, Burwell Starke Randolph, when a midshipman in the U.S. Navy, fell from a mast and was crippled. Her devoted care of that injured son is said to have hastened her death, and would seem to explain her epitaph.

Alabama, Limestone County, near Decatur
The Southeast Air Forces Training Center operated by Southern Aviation Training School, also known as Pryor Field, was constructed in 1941. These two aircraft hangars and beacon tower are the remaining artifacts of one of only a few World War II Army Air Forces Training Centers that have remained in continuous use as airplanes hangars since 1941. The school provided primary flight training for Army Air Forces pilots. The facility was deactivated on December 28, 1944 and turned over to the Army Corps of Engineers in September 1945. The training center was eventually discharged to the War Assets Administration as surplus and became a civil airport. The hangars were then used to convert surplus Army aircraft for commercial airline use for the Southern Airways Company which became part of Delta Airlines.

The facility was listed in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 2010.

Indiana, Crawford County, Marengo, Crawford County
Discovered September 6, 1883 by Blanche & Orris Hiestand who descended into the first room. The following Sunday, Mitch Stewart and friends explored the main passageways. The next day, local residents descended in mass on the cave. Owner Samuel Stewart, recognizing the commercial potential, secured the entrance and immediately opened the cave to the public. The Marengo Cave Company was formed in 1900 to operate the cave. The cave became a popular destination for railroad excursions prior to the Great Depression.

Continued on back

Local residents used their wagons to haul visitors to and from the train depot. As transportation changed from trains to automobiles, the business languished yet survived on word-of-mouth advertising. The cave was sold to Floyd Denton in 1955. Floyd had big plans for redevelopment but died in 1960 before he could realize many of his plans. The cave was sold to a group of avid cave explorers in 1973. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1984, the cave business has steadily increased since 1973 to become Indiana's #1 natural attraction.

Alabama, Elmore County, Wetumpka
Constructed in 1924 on five acres, this building was one of nine schools constructed in Elmore County with funding assistance from the Julius Rosenwald Fund. Between 1912-32, Julius Rosenwald, a Jewish philanthropist and CEO of Sears, Roebuck and Company teamed up with Booker T. Washington and Tuskegee Institute to provide matching grants for the construction of school buildings for African Americans in mostly rural areas of the South. This collaborative effort produced more than 5,000 of these buildings in 15 southern states, 389 of which were constructed in Alabama. In addition to the Rosenwald funding of $1,300, the community, both black and white contributed $5,400 toward the construction of this school. The school grew to six buildings on an eight-acre site before being closed due to integration in 1963. In 1987, the original 1924 building was restored for use as the Elmore County Black History Museum. This building, along with others on the site, was placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 2001.

Hutchings, Sealy & Co. Buildings

Texas, Galveston County, Galveston
Four decades after joining in partnership, George Ball, John Henry Hutchings, and John Sealy employed prominent Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton to design office buildings for their Ball, Hutchings & Co. commission and banking operations. Built in 1895 as two individual but connected structures, these buildings complemented Galveston's Stand Avenue, known at the time as the "Wall Street of the Southwest."

The buildings' renaissance revival style is represented by the heavily rusticated stone arches featured on its entryways, terra cotta detailing on the parapets and entablatures, evenly spaced columns and pilasters, elaborate stone cornice, and arcading windows. The foundation walls are six feet wide at the base and made of pressed brick with ashlar patterned sandstone facing.

The corner building, which features the name "Hutchings" on its entablature, was originally constructed for John H. Hutchings. The adjoining office building, featuring the name "Sealy" on its entablature, was built for John Sealy. These majestic buildings are reminders of a grand era in Galveston's history and the philanthropic legacy of these early businessmen. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1992

Covered Bridges

0
0
North Carolina, Catawba County, near Claremont

Why Covered Bridges:
They protect exposed wooden superstructures from rot resulting from exposure to the elements (rain, sleet, snow, and blazing sun).
An uncovered wooden bridge's life span would be 15-20 years; but with a roof and sides, one would last as long as a hundred years.

Misconceptions:
Wooden bridges prevented heavy snows from covering and/or blocking passage.
Barn-like appearance soothed animal fears of bridge crossing (prevented horses from bolting).
Covered bridges protected travelers from the sun.

Structures
Often were built by farmers in the form of a bard-raising; hence, they had a barn-like outward appearance, but utilized several different truss systems. TRUSS: triangular system of timbers designed so that each timber helps support the others; together, they distribute the weight and stress over the span of the structure.

In 1805, the first American covered bridge was built in Philadelphia, PA, across the Schuylkill River, with 3 spans and 550' long. The first covered bridge in NC was built across the Yadkin River near Salisbury, in 1818, by a local plantation owner who used Ithiel Town's lattice truss. During the 19th century, there were 1000s of covered bridges throughout the United States and 100s in North Carolina.
