The Flight Test Mission Control Center at Edwards Air Force Base is named for Colonel Ridley who lost his life in 1957 in the crash of a C-47 aircraft while serving on the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group in Japan.

Ridley was a pioneer of aviation engineering, an innovator, and one of the architects of modern aircraft testing. He logged more than 2,800 flight hours in his short career. He considered himself proficient in the flying of the F-80, F-86, F-84, F-89, B-29, B-45, B-47, B-50, B-25, C-47, T-33 and X-1.

He first served as a test pilot on the B-24 bomber. Ridley served as pilot and project officer on the X-1 project and as pilot and project engineer on the Air Force evaluation of the XB-47. At Edwards Air Force Base, Ridley rose from Chief of the Flight Test Center’s Test Engineering Branch to Chief of the Flight Test Engineering Laboratory. He established the basic testing techniques and philosophy of the Flight Test Center.

He was appointed as one of the original members of the NATO’s Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development. He served on the flight test techniques panel from 1951-1956. Many of the techniques developed by his panel remain in use today.

Jack Ridley was honored by an audience with Pope Pius in Italy and induction into the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame.

Established in 1990 by the Lancaster City Council, the Aerospace Walk of Honor celebrates test pilots who were associated with Edwards AFB. Recognition is awarded for distinguished aviation careers marked by significant and obvious achievements beyond one specific accomplishment.

Henry Clay Work

“Hurrah! Hurrah! We bring the Jubilee.
Hurrah! Hurrah! The flag that makes you free!
Se we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia”     “Marching through Georgia,” by Henry Clay Work

Henry Clay Work was born in Middletown in 1832, the son of an impassioned abolitionist named Alanson Work. When Henry was about three years old, his father moved the family to Illinois o that he could help slaves escape to Canada on the Underground Railroad. During the next few years, Alanson Work helped over 3,000 slaves reach freedom, and finally was arrested and imprisoned for his activities. After his release from prison, Alanson Work brought his family back to Middletown for several years.
When Henry Clay Work grew up, he worked as a printer in Hartford and Chicago. In his spare time, he taught himself music and began composing songs. Before long, his first song was published; in the decades following, Work penned some of the 19th century’s favorite tunes. Many focussed on social issues of the time, such as the temperance movement or the condition of African Americans. In 1865, Work wrote “Marching through Georgia,” a Civil War anthem celebrating Union General William T. Sherman’s 1864 campaign that destroyed Confederate supplies, liberated slaves and helped bring about the South’s surrender.
Henry Clay Work’s most popular composition was “Grandfather’s Clock,” a sentimental ballad about his grandfather’s “treasure and pride,” a tall clock that “stopped short, never to go again, When the old man died.” The 1875 song sold nearly a million copies and earned the then considerable sum of $4,000 in royalties.
Despite his success as a songwriter, Henry Clay Work’s life had many tragedies: three of his children died young, his wife lost her sanity and had to be institutionalized, and Work lost nearly all of his money in two ill-fated investments. In 1881, the composer died in Hartford after writing over seventy songs. People around the world still sing some of them today.

Middletown Heritage Trail
Welcome to the Middletown Heritage Trail! You’ll find “stations” like this one throughout the downtown area. Each gives a brief glimpse into the city’s past, recounting stories about interesting people, places, and events in Middletown’s history. You can follow the Heritage Trail as a whole, or just visit individual stations. An overview of the Trail is located beside Police Headquarters at 222 Main Street. Heritage Trail brochures are available at the Middletown Police Headquarters, the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce (393 Main Street), the Russell Library (123 Broad Street) and the Middlesex Historical Society (151 Main Street).

More Music from Middletown
Henry Clay Work was not the only Middletown native to influence American music. In Reginald deKoven composed the first important American operetta, “Robin Hood, “ which featured the ever-popular song, “O, Promise Me.” DeKoven, who had studied music throughout Europe, was a conductor and music critic as well as a composer. In the 20th century two more Middletown natives drew the spotlight in the entertainment scene. From the 1930s to the 1960s, Elias Paul “Allie” Wrubel composed songs for film, including the jaunty “Zip-A-Dee-Doo Dah” for “Song of the South, “ which won the Academy Award for Best Song of 1947. Tony Pastor serenaded Americans with his saxophone during the “Big Band” era of the thirties and forties. Born Antonio Pestritto in 1907 to parents who had emigrated from Melilli, Sicily, Tony grew up in Middletown’s North End. He took saxophone lessons first from Allie Wrubel, and later from Lucio Pandolfini, a Melillese native who had studied at Italy’s Conservatory of Music. Young Tony soon crashed the national scene, gaining acclaim for his exceptional solo on “Begin the Beguine” with the Artie Shaw Band.

A stevedore training program was established in 1942 at Fort Indiantown Gap. Soldiers were trained to load and unload cargo using three wood and concrete dry land ships. Many recruits were African Americans whose companies were segregated from their parent port battalions during instruction but not in WWII combat locales such as Italy and Normandy Beach on D-Day. Training provided here enabled efficient operations instrumental in Allied victory.

America Responds To A New Challenge

South Carolina, Charleston County, Sullivans Island

The growth of powerful iron navies during the 1890’s prompted the United States to build hundreds of new anti-battleship batteries such as this, which mounted four 10-inch guns.

Each shell, weighing as much as 617 pounds, had a range of nearly 8.5 miles (14,700 yds. or 13,436 M.) and was capable of penetrating 20 inches of armor at close range. A well-trained gun crew could fire at the rate of 1½ times a minute. This rate of fire was made possible by the use of the disappearing carriage, which employed the energy of its recoil to lower the gun behind the fortification. Counterweights raised the gun for the next round.

These 82,000 pound giants remained on active duty from 1898 to 1943.

Disappearing Rifle: The Endicott System

South Carolina, Charleston County, Sullivans Island

This rooftop cavity held the carriage mechanism for one of Battery Jasper’s four 10-inch disappearing rifles. Installed in 1898, these formidable weapons represented the latest technology. Weighing 55 tons with a range of 8.5 miles, they fired 571-pound shells.

Rising above the parapet to fire, the rifle recoiled by moving back and down, “disappearing” behind the thick concrete walls to allow the crew to reload in safety. The breech-loading rifle was raised and lowered by using a counterweight which rested on the deep center cavity of the gun mount.

In 1943, Charleston Harbor’s Endicott batteries were obsolete, and the coast artillerymen removed the guns and carriage.

This gun emplacement, manned by the Regular Army in peacetime, drew upon the Coast Artillery units of the National Guard for its huge manpower needs in wartime. One 10-inch gun crew alone consisted of 43 men – 26 of the gun detachment, 11 handling ammunition, and 6 as relief.

Artillerists not assigned to the guns performed other vital duties including position finding, searchlight operation, and harbor mine defense. In addition, all were cross-trained as infantry. The work was strenuous but required precision and specialized skills, as well as constant drill and practice.

South Carolina, Georgetown County, Georgetown
The rice culture in Georgetown County is one of the most colorful chapters in American History. Through maps, dioramas, artifacts, "The Garden of Gold" video produced by the museum, and other exhibits, the Rice Museum tells the story of the rice plantation era and a society based on one agricultural crop.

The Kaminski Building next door houses the Maritime History Museum, home of the "Browns Ferry Vessel." Listed on the National Register, this is the oldest vessel of colonial manufacture in the United States. This 50-foot vessel was built around 1700 and sank in the Black River in the Browns Ferry area of Georgetown County in 1730.

Other exhibits in the museum include the history of the Kaminski Hardware Company, Gullah history of the S.C. Low Country; the life of Miss Ruby Forsythe, one of South Carolina's great educators; and the story of Joseph Hayne Rainey, the first African American elected to the U.S. Congress.

The Provost Gallery houses rotating exhibits of art and history, and the gift shop features local arts and crafts, as well as items from museum collections throughout the world.
