Pilot Butte & "Graves" of the Unknown Emigrants

Wyoming, Sweetwater County, near Farson

Welcome to the Pilot Butte Emigrant Trails Interpretive Site. The purpose of the site is to help you gain a sense of what life was like for the 400,000 emigrants who left their homes to seek a new life in the West. They were seeking wealth, religious freedom, land of their own, a new life. They all found hardship and suffering along the trail.

At the bottom of the path you'll see the actual trail ruts of the Oregon, California, Mormon Pioneer, and Pony Express National Historic Trails.

The signs along the path relate some of the history of the westward expansion. During your visit, look around. This area is largely unchanged from the days of overland emigrants. Imagine what it would have been like to walk, ride a horse, or drive a wagon halfway across America and a long way from home.

Just a few miles from where you're standing, the emigrants would come to the first of several trail "splits" that would take them to a crossing on the Green River where they would camp for the evening.

Even with South Pass behind them, Oregon or California-bound travelers still faced more than half their journey and the roughest traveling portion of the trail. Emigrants headed to Utah were slightly better off as they were less than a month away from journey's end.

As you continue your journey, think about the courage of the people who passed through this country and settled half our nation.

Old Country Kitchen

Three medieval houses were combined in 1893 by the architects Alfred Chiodera (1850-1916) and Theophil Tschudy (1847-1911) and equipped with today's eye-catching dining room.
The double arch, clad in majolica, at the entrance front of the pavilion comes from the ceramic company Bodmer & Beavers. Chiodera & Tschudy had built (after seeing it) at the Swiss national exhibition of 1883 in Zurich.

Liberty or Death

South Carolina, Charleston County, Sullivans Island

The American victory at Breach Inlet came at great risk and sacrifice. Thomson’s rangers, other state troops, militia, and Indians from South Carolina were joined by soldiers from North Carolina and Virginia. They all hurried to defend Sullivan’s Island, knowing their rebellion jeopardized their lives and property. British troops and Americans loyal to the crown made long and perilous journeys by sea and land to put down the rebellion. They arrived on these desolate wilderness islands sick, tired, and hungry, and suffered from disease, heat, humidity, scant food, and bad water. Men on both sides made the ultimate sacrifice during the exhausting ten days and nights of combat. By sacrifice and skill, the Americans on Sullivan’s Island won a surprising and decisive victory that helped keep Charles Town free from British control for four crucial years.

the suffocating heat . . . was the most insufferable I ever felt, not a breath of air stirring – thick cobwebs to push thro’ everywhere, knee deep in rotten wood and dryed Leaves, every hundred yards a swamp with putrid standing water in the middle, full of small Alligators, a thick cloud of Musquitoes every where and no place entirely free from Rattle Snakes. . . . spiders, their bodies as large as my coat Button . . . Crocodiles are very frequent and large in these places, we killed one nine feet long, which attacked a Soldier, it was with difficulty he got from him . . . nothing to eat and drink but salt Pork, bad rum and brackish water, no other bed than the Sand and no other covering than the Sky.”British Surgeon Thompson Foster
on Long Island
“ . . . our situation here is looked on by every officer in our case as desperate, and that we must certainly fall a sacrifice . . . However, . . . they would not quit the island were they certain of death.”American Major Samuel Wise
on Sullivan’s Island
I shall . . . conclude with expressing the high satisfaction I have received from the zeal, activity and public spirit of the Gentlemen and Inhabitants of this City and Province . . . we have all worked in concert and harmony for the common good.”American General Charles Lee

Savanna Army Depot Activity

Illinois, Carroll County, near Savanna
[Ordnance Corps U.S.A. insignia]

The area that encompasses Savanna Army Depot was acquired in 1917 when the United States Congress authorized the commanding officer of Rock Island Arsenal to purchase certain lands for the test of field artillery.

Savanna Proving Ground officially opened on 26 December 1918 and over the next two years increased activities spurred a building expansion which continued until the need for test facilities diminished. Savanna was then redesignated as an ordinance depot in 1921 and became independent of Rock Island Arsenal.

The onset of World War II caused a great expansion of the manufacturing and storage facilities at Savanna, to include a one of a kind "Group I" shell loading plant. It was this Group I plant that was used to load the special light weight bombs used by General James Doolittle in his historical Tokyo raid. The unique capabilities of Savanna ensured the depot played a central role in World War II and resulted in it being designated as an Enterprise "E" site with two silver stars.

The depot continued to function as an ammunition storage and production facility after W.W. II and in 1950, the Army Defense Ammunition Center and School was established at Savanna. In 1961 Savanna's unique capability was again shown when it was assigned a special weapons mission that it maintained through 1975.

Savanna Army Depot activity has continually supported the nation's defense through the Korean War, Vietnam War and most recently the Gulf War. It is in recognition of all these contributions to America's Army that this monument is dedicated as a lasting tribute to the thousands of men and women who have worked and served here. Their efforts and sacrifices should not be forgotten by future generations.

Allen Moore, Sr. founded the Chillicothe Normal School and Business Institute in 1890. His desire to locate in Chillicothe was due to the progressive spirit he saw in the citizens of the town.

The city agreed to purchase the site and construct the academic building at a cost of $25,000. Mr. Moore built the first dormitory. Over 600 students attended the first year.

Upon the death of Allen Moore Sr. in 1907 Allen Moore, Jr. became president, and his brother Roy Moore, vice president. The enrollment grew each year with a desire by students for more business subjects including bookkeeping, stenography, telegraphy and penmanship. In 1910 the name was appropriately changed to Chillicothe Business College. C.B.C. became known as the largest school in America devoted exclusively to business education.

During the next forty-two years of growth additional classrooms, dining hall, dormitories, gymnasium and football stadium were added to the campus. Activities included band and orchestra, along with a complete athletic program of football, basketball and track.

During World War II and the Korean War, C.B.C. joined the effort by training supply clerks for the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Upon the death of Allen Moore, Jr. in 1945 Allen Moore III became president and Ralph Moore, vice president. They operated C.B.C. successfully until 1953 at which time they made the difficult decision to close the college due to the courses being offered by high schools, technology and the economics of the times. Over 120,000 students could be claimed as alumni during the sixty-two years of its existence.

The Chillicothe Business College was a fine addition to Chillicothe not only economically but it also created an identity for the town. The well-known orange and black arrow road signs marked the mileage across the nation, including Alaska, to Chillicothe, Mo.

Near this place from the porch of Effingham Tavern on 22 April 1776, Carter Henry Harrison, a member of the Cumberland Committee for Safety, read the Resolutions of Cumberland County to citizens gathered there. These resolutions called for the Colonies to “abjure any allegiance to his Brittanick majesty and bid him a goodnight forever.” The freeholders approved these resolutions, and Harrison was instructed “positively to declare for an independency” at the Virginia Convention. On this historic occasion, Cumberland made the first call by a governmental body for independence from Great Britain.
