Old Spanish Trail

0
0
California, Los Angeles County, San Gabriel
The Old Spanish Trail was an historic pack trail connecting Santa Fe to the pueblo of Los Angeles. Travelers from Santa Fe aimed for the San Gabriel Mission as a welcome destination and gathering place. Traders brought woolen goods from New Mexico and returned with highly prized California mules and horses. The trail originated as a trade route from Santa Fe into central Utah during the Spanish Colonial days but was also used as an emigrant trail to California during the Mexican period.

Inset on right: San Gabriel Mission On September 8, 1771 founding Fathers Pedro Cambon and Angel Somera named the new mission for the Archangel Gabriel. It was the fourth in a chain of 21 missions built in California. In 1774, Juan Bautista de Anza arrived and established a formal overland route from Mexico City to California.

As trade between the United States and the new Republic of Mexico expanded, Santa Fe traders saw the potential for profits in dealing directly with California ranchers and church missions. In the fall of 1829, well after Mexican Independence from Spain, Antonio Armijo led a caravan westward from Sante Fe. He arrived at the San Gabriel Mission in January, 1830 with 60 men and pack mules loaded with woolen goods. Armijo returned to Santa Fe that spring with an additional 100 horses and mules. For the first time, a trade and communication route was established between the Mexican provinces of New Mexico and California. Thus the Old Spanish Trail was born.

Following the success of Armijo’s expedition, San Gabriel Mission became a focal point for the lucrative trade. Traders, trappers and travelers coming west gathered here to conduct their business with the Californios. The Mission was one of the most prosperous in California, and the padres graciously provided food, rest and shelter to the travelers, weary from the long and difficult trail. Some of the visitors were no doubt rough and unruly, but all were treated with courtesy by the padres.

Governor Pio Pico secularized San Gabriel Mission in 1834 and much of the land became private property. In 1874, the Catholic Church was granted control of only 13 acres including the church.

The Lincoln Highway Bridge Rails

Nevada, Washoe, near Verdi

These are the first Lincoln Highway bridge rails ever built on the nation's first transcontinental highway. The Abraham Lincoln Highway ran from Times Square, New York, to Lincoln Park in San Francisco, during 1913-1927.

Towns all across the nation were anxious to have the "Main Street of America" pass their way and went all out to advertise the route. Washoe County had been criticized for not marking their part of the route. So in 1914, contractor A.F. Neidt, when building a new culvert about 0.9 miles east of here took it upon himself to mark the highway with these unique rails.

H.E. Frederickson, (pictured) Consul-at-large of the Lincoln Highway Association was so impressed with the rails that he proposed this design for all Lincoln Highway bridges clear across the country. Only one other such set of bridge rails were ever built, in Tama, Iowa, the following year in 1915.

In later years, when the highway numbering system replaced named highways, this route became U.S. 40 and was eventually realigned.

During the early 1970's, when Interstate 80 replaced U.S. 40, the Nevada Department of Transportation salvaged the old bridge rails from the long abandoned Lincoln Highway and put them on display here.

Terminal Island Memorial
From the early 1900s until World War II, the fishing village of "Fish Harbor" on Terminal Island was a
thriving community of 3,000 people – primarily Japanese immigrants and their U.S.-born children. The local canneries and fishing boats played a vital role in the American fishing industry. In the village’s neat rows of shops and homes people loved, laughed, worked, played and raised families. On February 25, 1942, all villagers of Japanese descent were given 48 hours to leave Terminal Island. By April the village was gone, homes and livelihoods taken away and villagers sent to internment camps.
- We remember these people, and the community of Terminal Island that was their home.

Panel 2:
The story of Terminal Island is the story of a fishing village, and the Japanese Americans, young and old, who made it their home.

For young girls, Girls' Day was a day to be celebrated, to dress in their kimonos, display their dolls and perform traditional folk dances.
On Boys' Day the symbolic carp flags were flown, and boys displayed their athletic prowess at the annual track meet.

The Rocky Mountain Fur Company, headed by Milton G. Sublette, David E. Jackson and Jedediah S. Smith, conducted a fur trading rendezvous in this vicinity in June-July, 1827, taking 130 bales of beaver furs for shipment to St. Louis by pack train. Sublette had left St. Louis in March with 60 men and merchandise, arriving via South Pass in late June. The trading was concluded and all parties dispersed in mid-July 1827, following the return of Smith from a perilous journey to California. Traders were also here in 1826. Large bands of Indians frequently gather here.

Samuel and Elizabeth Pinder Baker built this "Cracker" house in 1882. A sponge hooker of mariner lineage who owned land at Baillie's Bluff, he gave it a nautical touch as well as the traditional "Dog Trot" hall through the center. Vertical wall planks are joined like shipbuilders fasten together wooden hulls. Restored for use as a museum, the Baker House is the "Crown Jewel" of Pasco County's Centennial Park.

St. Marks Lighthouse

Florida, Wakulla County, St. Marks
Noted lighthouse builder Winslow Lewis began work on the Saint Marks structure in 1829. Eroding shores forced relocation a short distance inland in 1842 to its present location. The adjoining keeper’s house is not original having been rebuilt on several occasions. During the Civil War the lighthouse played a role in military affairs primarily because of its strategic position on the coast. Coastal raids launched from the blockading squadron comprised much of the hostile action against the Confederacy in Florida. One such raid in June of 1862 resulted in the destruction of a fortification located near the lighthouse. In response to the danger of raids of this nature, Confederate Army pickets were positioned in or near the lighthouse on a regular basis. To deter the use of the lighthouse as a lookout tower, a naval party launched and burned the steps and interior woodwork on July 15, 1863. In March of 1865 Federal Troops landed near the lighthouse for a major raid into the interior only to be repulsed at the Battle of Natural Bridge. Restored to service after the war it resumed the role of a navigational aid for Gulf Coast commerce.

West Elfers Cemetery

Florida, Pasco County, near Elfers
As part of the Baillie Settlement, a congregation of Methodists and Baptists established a Union Church and cemetery on this site, ca. 1876. In March 1877, the church conducted the first burial with the interment of Peter K. Baillie, pioneer settler and Seminole Indian War veteran. When a fire destroyed the church in 1885, the Methodists established their own church and cemetery, now known as East Elfers Cemetery. In 1891, the Baptists relocated to become the Anclote Missionary Baptist Church. In the late 1930s, Michael Milbauer acquired a tax deed for the greater part of the cemetery property. The Milbauer family then established the cemetery as a community burial place, giving burial plots to the underprivileged. After surveying the property, Michael Milbauer deeded a portion to the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine in 1955, who, in turn, deeded it to the Diocese of St. Petersburg in 1983. The Milbauers retained part of the cemetery for a family plot. After Michael's son, Richard died in 1981, the Milbauer portion of the cemetery was deeded equally to the University of Florida Foundation and Saint Leo College, who both deeded their portions to Pasco County in 1987. Among those buried in the West Elfers Cemetery are former public officials, ministers and veterans of seven U.S. wars.

Historic Shockoe Valley

Virginia, Richmond
Richmond is one of the most historic cities in the nation. Captain John Smith was among the first Europeans to visit in 1607, and William Byrd II, the founder of Richmond laid out the original street pattern.

This photograph, taken in 1865 shows Shockoe Valley as it appeared from the Taylor's Hill Park overlook. Note in the distance upon the hill, Thomas Jefferson's majestically designed Virginia State Capitol Building. It houses the oldest legislative body in the United States, the Virginia General Assembly.

The Monumental Church, on Broad Street, is barely visible on the edge of the picture on the right. It is one of America's earliest and most distinctive Greek Revival churches. It was built to honor those who died in a theatre fire on that location in 1811.

Where the grove of trees is located in the right center of the photograph is the Adam Craig House, considered the second oldest structure in the city dating from 1784 to 1787. The house, currently a private residence, served as an art center from 1938 to 1941.

Shockoe Valley was the center of the domestic slave trade until 1865. The wagons in the middle of the view were lined up at Seabrook Warehouse. Behind it and to the right was one of the most notorious trading sites, Lumpkin's Jail, known as 'Hell's Half Acre.'

After Walt Disney's death in December of 1966, the citizens of Marceline lobbied the United States Postal Department to issue a commemorative stamp to his honor. The postal department agreed to issue the stamp. After the issuance of the stamp was announced, Burbank CA, Kansas City MO, Anaheim CA, and Chicago IL vied along with Marceline to be the location of the first day issuance. Marceline was chosen to be the location of the issuance ceremonies.

The Disney family and other honored guests arrived for the postage stamp ceremonies on the Santa Fe Railway Super Chief renamed the "Walt Disney Special," for this event. The United States Postal Department originally ordered 120,000 stamps, but the unusual demand for these stamps resulted in total production of 153,015,000.

Charleston Naval Hospital Historic District

0
0
South Carolina, Charleston County, North Charleston
The Charleston Naval Hospital Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. The 32 buildings and structures that comprise the district represent two periods of development at the Naval Base that closely relate to the growth of the Navy during the 20th century. A prior hospital, constructed in 1917, was demolished in 1922 as demand for hospital services declined after World War I. Only two Craftsman-style residential cottages built in 1917 survive from that period (Quarters 1 and 2), while the remainder of the structures were built just prior to and during World War II, including the existing hospital complex.

Three groups of buildings comprise the historic district: treatment facilities centered on the main hospital complex; service related buildings located to the east of the main hospital building; and residential buildings for officers and staff that are located to the west and south of the hospital. Spanish Colonial style influences such as smooth white walls, hipped roofs with overhanging eaves, and red terra cotta roof tiles are prevalent throughout the district.

The Naval Hospital continued to serve sailors, those who worked at the base and their families until 1972, when a new high-rise hospital was built on nearby Rivers Avenue.

Old Sam

0
Michigan, Branch County, Coldwater

Hero of the Civil War, a beautiful, powerfully built draft horse, was the only survivor of the two hundred horses assigned to the Loomis battery of Michigan, after having been engaged in many battles and skirmishes.

Old Sam was wounded several times and half-starved most of the time, yet he endured four years of battle fatigue, hunger, and pain. (The average life span of a war horse was three to five months.)

On July 28, 1865, after the War, Old Sam and his War comrades were shipped back to Coldwater. Old Sam's No. 1 cannon and caisson were presented to General Loomis for placement in the Loomis Park.

Old Sam was awarded all the honors of a war hero. Each Memorial Day, Old Sam led the parade to the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Old Sam went to his final rest on November 8, 1876 at the age of 27 years. Secretly at night, Old Sam was buried with full military honors at Oak Grove Cemetery with his comrades. Truly, Old Sam was one of the great war horses of history.
