In early descriptions it was known as Cerrito De Las Ranas, meaning the Hill of the Frogs. In the 1890s this hill became the scene of mining excitement. Its soil composition, very red in color, had caused early American settlers to name it Red Hill. This landmark is a physical reminder of our rich State and local history.

In the midst of preparations for their exodus to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake, the Mormon pioneers were asked by the United States government to enlist a battalion of 500 volunteers for service in the war with Mexico. These troops started from western Iowa in July, 1846, and arrived in San Diego January 29, 1847. Completing the longest infantry march in history, this expedition helped win the war, prepared the way for colonization of the southwest, opened new trade routes, and strengthened distant national boundaries.

The Rochin Adobe

California, Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara
In 1856 Senor Jose Maria Rochin purchased for $30 the first parcel of land sold within the presidio boundaries.

"1st day of October 1856, between the mayor and common council of the city of Santa Barbara of the first part and Jose Maria Rochin of the second part, for consideration of $30, Santa Barbara property. Signed Francisco Ruiz, presidente del concejo, and Antonio Maria de La Guerra, mayor."

On the 250' by 120' lot a three-room house was constructed of adobe bricks salvaged from the ruins of structures built against the southeast presidio wall.

Originally build at an angle following the presidio walls, a portion of the porch was lost when the street was graded to the 1851 Haley survey specifications. Note that the porch roof overhang is still at the original angle. The rear section of the adobe and protective siding were added in 1901 by F.L Birabent, the son-in-law of Jose and Lorenza. The Rochin Adobe as remained in the family for 135 years. May it continue thus.

A Very Old Fish Story

Minnesota, Wabasha County, Lake City
Ten thousand years ago, as the Ice Age was drawing to a close, Wisconsin's fast-flowing Chippewa River carried vast quantities of sand. But where the Chippewa entered the Mississippi, ten miles downstream from here, its current slowed and the sand settled to the bottom, forming a natural dam that backed up the waters of the Mississippi. Thus was born Lake Pepin, one of the most beautiful stretches of the Mississippi.

Prehistoric Relics
Lake Pepin teems with fish, including species whose ancestry can be traced to prehistoric times. Among the largest and most unusual are the sturgeon and the paddlefish.

These primitive fish were abundant in Lake Pepin until the 1930s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began building a network of locks and dams that altered the Mississippi River's flow all the way to St. Louis. Migratory fish like then sturgeon, paddlefish, and skipjack herring could no longer move freely upstream to spawn, and their numbers have decreased dramatically.

Sport and Commerce
With more than 85 species of fish, Lake Pepin is a resource for recreational and commercial fishing. Important game fish include northern pike, white bass, black crappie, bluegill, sauger, and walleye. Carp, smallmouth buffalo, bigmouth buffalo, flathead catfish, and freshwater drum are important commercially fished species.

Gun Platform No. 1 - 1945

California, San Diego County, San Diego

The two larger mounts are 5-inch 51 calibre guns which were found on older battleships. This gun was designed to engage surface craft, especially swift torpedo boats that were too fast to be tracked and destroyed by a battleship’s large main guns. The large wheels on either side controlled the gun’s horizontal and vertical direction. The weapon fired a fifty pound, 5-inch diameter shell and was propelled by a powder charge inside a separate silk bag. It had a range of 8 miles and a speed of more than 3,100 feet per second.

The single weapon with the elaborate mount is a 5-inch 38 calibre dual purpose gun. This lighter gun offered handiness in engaging aircraft targets with the same range and hitting power of a surface mount. It was widely used on destroyers, carriers, and the later cruiser and battleship designs. The weapon could throw its 55 pound shell nine miles when fired vertically with a velocity of 3,6oo feet per second.

The three weapons are 3-inch 50 calibre duel purpose guns. Developed in the 1930s, the design was light weight for its time and used until automatic anti-aircraft weapons were perfected. This weapon was favored on smaller ships such as support vessels and anti-submarine escorts. It fired a fixed round which combined the thirteen pound shell and propellant in an attached casing like a bullet. It could fire a shell nearly seven miles at a muzzle velocity of 2,700 feet per second.
