On June 4, 1990, the Big Ten Conference admitted Penn State as its eleventh member. Established in 1895 as one of the nation's first intercollegiate athletic organizations, the conference instituted a blueprint for the control and administration of college athletics under the direction of appointed faculty representatives. The Big Ten became a model for the successful jointure of academic integrity and athletic excellence.

Demonstrating that sport can be a powerful force for social change, Penn State led the way in breaking the color barrier in intercollegiate football in the south. By the players' own decision, the team refused an offer to play a segregated deep south opponent in 1946. The Nittany Lions then became the first team to field African American players in the Cotton Bowl in 1948 and the Gator Bowl in 1971.

On moving from the Dyer field Beatty's brigade formed line at right angles to this road facing north. His left was soon advanced to the high ground near the McDonald house and immediately became engaged. General Negley hastened with Stanley's brigade to the support of Beatty then being forced back and at once became engaged on the right of Beatty in the woods west of the Kelly field both brigades facing north. Sirwell's brigade upon being relieved near Brotherton's at 10 A.M. was ordered to support the left of Beatty but before joining him was ordered to Snodgrass Ridge.

In 1892, under the direction of Prof. Henry Waters, Penn State became the first American institution of higher education to offer correspondence courses in agriculture. The goal was to make scientific studies available to those persons unable to attend traditional college classes. Penn State's initiative was followed by a national expansion of correspondence instruction in technical fields.

At nearby Curtin, making iron was begun about 1810 by Roland Curtin. The last old-style furnace in the U.S. was in blast here and ceased operation in 1922.

Martin Luther King Jr.

On Jan. 21, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to a crowd of 8,000 in Rec Hall as part of his efforts to draw national attention to the need for voting rights reforms that would prevent discrimination against African Americans. Dr. King's powerful non-violent message helped to spur passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, widely considered the most successful piece of U.S. Civil Rights Legislation.

Great Shamokin Path

The Indian highway from Shamokin, now Sunbury, to Kittanning, left the Bald Eagle Valley to follow Marsh Creek and Little Marsh Creek. It crossed the Allegheny Mt. by way of Snow Shoe and Moshannon.

John I. Thompson Grain Elevator and Coal Sheds

Erected in 1885 for his son John by Lemont founder Moses Thompson, this complex was a hub of trade for Centre County. Grain was exported and coal imported on the Belle- fonte, Nittany, & Lemont Railroad, later part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, contri- buting to the regional economy. These buildings are rare surviving examples of wooden structures of their kind. Moses Thompson was also a founder of Farmer's High School, now Penn State University.

Plumbe Forge

About six-tenths mile north are the remains of the forge built by Dr. John Plumbe in 1828. Here, "blooms" were made from pig iron carried from the Bald Eagle Valley by mule. Costs of hauling products to the Pennsylvania Canal caused the forge to close in 1842.

Two miles southwest of here, an iron center called Scotia was established by Andrew Carnegie in 1881. Here houses were erected, a railroad built, and machinery set up. Some physical traces of the center have remained.

About 8 A.M. this brigade arrived from its position in the Dyer field as the reserve of Negley's division and went into line on the left of Dodge's brigade its left extending across the Lafayette road. About 8:30 A.M. it was ordered to advance its left to the high ground near or around the McDonald house.

Callaway–Steptoe Cemetery

Nearby are buried several prominent area settlers and their descendants. Col. William Callaway, in 1755 one of the first two members of the Virginia House of Burgesses from Bedford County, donated the hundred acres of land on which the town of New London was built. His son Col. James Callaway served as county lieutenant (commander in chief) of the Bedford County militia , during the Revolutionary War. James Callaway s son-in-law James Steptoe was a close personal friend of Thomas Jefferson and served for 54 years as the first clerk of Bedford County. Steptoe’s home. Federal Hill, stands nearby.
