The wall was erected by the Beduin Governor of the Tiberias Region, Daher El-Omer, in the 18th century on the basis of the ruins of an earlier wall built by the Crusaders.

The wall was destroyed in the 1837 earthquake and since then only partially rebuilt. In the beginning of the 20th century, new settlements were established for the first time, outside the walls. The remaining ruins were once again struck by the great flood of 1934.

In May 1851, there was a chance encounter on the streets of Seneca Falls which forever altered the struggle for women's rights. Amelia Jenks Bloomer introduced Susan B. Anthony to Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The friendship that was forged between Stanton and Anthony gave direction and momentum to the seventy-two year struggle for women's suffrage which culminated on August 26, 1920 in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United Stated Constitution. Neither woman lived to see this happen.

[Text at the top of the marker]: Doors of Burial Caves

Burial caves were frequently sealed by stone doors in order to prevent bad smells and looting. In 2nd-3rd centuries CE Tiberias, basalt doors were used in mausolea and decorated with relief of panels and iron nails that imitated wooden doors.

[Text at the bottom of the marker]: Burial Customs - Sarcophagi

Burial in stone coffins (sarcophagi) was common from the second to the fifth centuries CE. The sarcophagi were composed of two parts: a rectangular box, in which the deceased was placed, and a lid. They were often decorated with carved floral, geometric and mythological motifs. The sarcophagi were placed in a built tomb (mausoleum) or in a hewn burial cave. The entrance to the cave was sealed by a stone door or a circular rolling stone. This burial custom was common among the entire population: Jews, Christians and pagans.

The Finns Point Range lights served as a point of entry and exit for maritime traffic between the Delaware Bay and River. In 1950, after the Army Corps of Engineers dredged the channel to 800 feet wide and 40 feet deep, the Finns Point Rangelights became obsolete.

Erected in 1876 for the U.S. Lighthouse Service at a cost of $1200, the Finns Point Rear Range Light is constructed of wrought iron as opposed to cast iron typically used in similar towers. Wrought iron was considered ideal for a tall structure exposed to both high winds and elements because of its resistance to corrosion and stress fractures.

Prior to automating the lamp in 1939, imagine the lighthouse keeper climbing each of the 130 steps to the top twice each day - once at night to light the lamp and again in the morning to extinguish the flame.

Efforts to Save the Lighthouse
In the years following its decommissioning, the Finns Point Rear Range Light went through a period of neglect, and the lighthouse keepers home burned to the ground. The toolshed is believed to be all that remains.

Through the efforts of a local citizens group called the "Save the Lighthouse Committee" and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Finns Point Rear Range Light was restored in 1983. Today, the lighthouse is part of the Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.

From Marsh to Solid Ground

Pennsylvania, Philadelphia County, Philadelphia
In 1771 the British army built Fort Mifflin on the southern tip of marshy Mud Island. The process of draining the island began with this construction. Over the next century the waterways between Mud and the other islands were gradually filled in by people and tidal silt.

Farms were established on higher ground. People dammed streams and drained meadows for fields and grazing. They built dikes to keep the tide from flooding their new pastures. The waterways filled in and became solid ground.

An Island of Green
As Philadelphia grew and prospered, it became the "world's workshop" in the 19th and 20th centuries. Industry eventually surrounded Fort Mifflin.

Today, the fort is an island of green in the midst of an urban industrial complex. Fort Mifflin forms a valuable link in a chain of green spaces along the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers that is essential in supporting and nurturing the region's wildlife.
