Florida, Santa Rosa County, Navarre
Dr. James Hartley Beal (1861-1945) was an influential pharmacist, chemist, lawyer, educator, and scientist. Despite his busy life, he began collecting land and marine shells, purchased his first specimen, in 1888. The Fort Walton Beach resident bought this house in early 1928. The building was used by Dr. Beal as his office and housed his extensive shell collection. By 1940, his collection had grown to be one of the largest shell collections in the world. The nearly two million shells were donated to Rollins College, where they remained on display until 1988. They were then transferred to the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida, Gainesville. The house was extensively remodeled and converted into the Summerhouse Restaurant, which operated there from the 1980s until 2004. It was originally located at 2 Miracle Strip Parkway in Fort Walton Beach. The building was slated for demolition in the fall of 2004. In order to save the building, Dr. Beal’s Shell Museum was purchased and moved by barge to its present location.

Looking for new opportunities for the steel company fabricated, Ingalls opened Ingalls Shipyard in 1937 to build dredges, tugboats, and barges for coastal and river service. Ingalls Shipyard produced a variety of watercraft for government, including "Liberty" boats, vital for transatlantic supply routes. As World War II approached, the yard's small size forced Ingalls to look for a larger site and relocated to Pascagoula MS. Ingalls' shipbuilding interest were sold to Litton Industries in 1961, which sold Decatur yard to Trinity Industries in 1981, which promptly closed it. A self-imposed occupancy tax implemented in 2001 by the Decatur-Morgan County Hospitality Association provided necessary funds for the development of a harbor and the city of Decatur purchased the property in 2003. Texas, Kinney County, near Brackettville
(About 8 miles south)
Only settlement founded in John Charles Beales' ill-fated Rio Grande colony of 1834-1836. Beales (1804-1878) -- empresario of 70,000,000 acres in present Southern and Western Texas and New Mexico -- was Texas' largest known land king. In 1833 he and a partner brought 59 settlers here to colonize a town to be named for Beales' Mexican wife. Indian raids and drought soon took their toll, but the death blow came in 1836. As the group fled the Mexican Army during the Texas Revolution, Comanches killed all but 7 of one party. This ended the town's existence.

On June 15, 2012, the world watched as professional tightrope walker Nik Wallenda crossed the Niagara Gorge on a wire. Table Rock complex marked the Canadian end point for this high wire walk, which began at Terrapin Point, directly across the Gorge at the Niagara Falls State Park, in New York.

The Niagara Parks Commission granted one-time permission for this event in order to recognize the role that daredevil performances and stunting have played in the rich history and promotion of Niagara Falls. Under the motion approved by the Commission, examination of a proposal submitted by a stunting professional will be considered no more than once in a generation, or approximately every 20 years, as a way to pay tribute to the history of stunting.

The establishment of the Niagara Parks Commission and the focus on the natural wonder of the Falls, has been a catalyst for the growth of Niagara Falls as a global tourism destination.

On July 8, 1885, Lair Patterson applied for new post office located 7 miles south-east of Jolon and asked that it be named Lockwood Post Office. While records in the National Archives do not show the reason for his selection, it has been assumed by most local historians that he did so to honor Belva Ann Lockwood who was the first woman nominated for President of the United States. She was nominated twice, first in 1884 and then in 1888. The Lockwood office was authorized July 23, 1888 with Lair Patterson as the first postmaster.

Today Lockwood is the blend of farming land, vineyards and cattle raising.pastures. With its 18 inch average rainfall (from November thru April) and around 100°F sunny summer days, it is ideal place for many locals who call Lockwood home.
