The Mustard Seed Trail

0

California, Monterey County, Gonzales
The legend of “the mustard seed trail” is rooted in the Portola expedition which travelled through the Ohlone tribal lands with a wagon containing sacks of mustard seeds. These seeds were spread behind them as they travelled north in the winter, marking a trail for their return in the spring by a blooming yellow pathway.

Supervising Muralist: Trudy Karl • Asst. Muralist: Eliazar De La Cruz • Youth Muralists: Angelica Delgado, Azuzena Rayo, Claudia Picaso, Gerardo Camerena, Jose Morales, Misciel Flores, and Ceasar Rico

Special thanks to the following corporations and agencies for their support of the Private Industry Council Private Sector Youth Program: The Pebble Beach Compay, Tanamura & Autle, The Marriot, Searles/Art Max, The Jock Shop, The Dole Corporation, PG&E, and the City of Gonzales, and the Gonzales Rotary
.
The goal of the “One Voice “ Murals Project is to enhance awareness of local cultural identities for Monterey County youths and their communities. This will be achieved through customized mural art and academics, work experience, field trips and mentoring in creative thinking that will ultimately give these youths “one voice” towards the dreams of their future.

This project was part of the 1998 Monterey County Summer Youth Employment Training Program funded by the United States Department of Labor supported by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors and the Monterey County Private Industry Council.

Gonzales

On September 26, 1836, Teodoro Gonzalez received a grant to the 15,218.62 acre Rancho Rincon de la Puente de Monte (“nook of the point of the woods”). Teodoro’s sons, Alfredo and Mariano, laid out a town on the Rancho and assured its prosperity by deeding a 100-foot right-of-way to the approaching Southern Pacific Railroad, which arrived in late 1872. The Gonzales Post Office was established on December 1, 1873. (No one knows how the city got its spelling – the family, who was listed as “Gonzallas” in the 1850 census, spelled their name with a “Z”). The city incorporated 73 years later, on January 17, 1947.

Boontling: The Lingo of Boonville

0

California, Mendocino County, Boonville
Storekeeper, W.W. Boone settled in Southern Anderson Valley among families that brought the Scottish and Midwestern patterns of speech in the mid 1890’s. Young men picked hops, sheared sheep, and displayed marvelous whit, cleverness, and intelligence to create a forceful descriptive 1,500 – word language harped by 500 residents.

The versatility of Boontling is apparent; “Bucky Waltered my abeqled to a tidricks for bake chiggle and zeese.”

Derivations : A pay phone cost an Indian “Bucky” nickel and Walter Levi owned the first (telephone), “Applehead” by unusual circumlocation (sic) is “girlfriend” and shortened “Tea-Drinkers” is a party. The next two words are from Scottish while that for “coffee” commemorates camp cook C.Z. “Zeese” Blivens renown strong brew.

Translation: I telephoned my girlfriend to go to a party for good food and coffee.

Use declined after 1917, when boonters marched into the Great War but boontling continues to amaze listeners and baffle outsiders.
