Old San Mateo County Courthouse

California, San Mateo County, Redwood City
Simon M. Mezes, owner of the land that now includes most of Downtown Redwood City, donated a block to the newly-formed San Mateo County in 1858 so that a courthouse could be built. There were eventually four courthouses built on this property. Couthouse No. 2 photo above left, was completed in 1883, In 1903, the architectural firm of Dodge and Dolliver designed Courthouse No. 3, which was ready for occupancy when the 1906 earthquake demolished all but the dome rotunda. This building was reconstructed between 1906-1910, middle photo, becoming Courthouse number 4.

The original entrance facade was demolished in 1939, and a Moderne Style addition was built, directly attached to the front of the building (pictured above, right), using funds from the Public Works Administration. The north facade received a new addition in 1941. The wooden flagpole, pictured in the 1915 photo above, was removed and now stands in front of the current City Hall at 1017 Middlefield Road. In 2005, the 1939 addition was demolished and the entrance facade was reconstructed to its original appearance. The “Old” San Mateo County Courthouse, now San Mateo County Historical Museum, is a significant example of Neo-Classical architecture, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Presented by the Redwood Historic Resources Advisory Committee

A County Seat

Maryland, Kent County, Chestertown
Establishing a county government is the first step for people building a stable community and a strong trade economy.

The first Kent County Courthouse was located at New Yarmouth, a 17th-century settlement abandoned when county lines were changed in 1706, That year, a new county seat was established at Chestertown (then known as "New Town") and its courthouse was built on this site. In 1860, the old colonial courthouse was torn down and replaced with the current building; its construction date can be seen above the door.

In early plantation days, tobacco was the common medium of exchange. It took 55,000 pounds of tobacco to rebuild the courthouse after a fire in 1719.

A complex Legacy

Country records house here span 350 years. They include land deeds, wills, court decisions and certificates of freedom given to manumitted slaves.

The Courthouse hosted public meetings at pivotal moments in American History. In 1774 patriots met to protest importation of tea from Britain. During the Civil War, General (and future U.S.president) James A. Garfield delivered a pro-union speech here; disgruntled locals expressed their own views by pelting him with eggs and rotten vegetables. The building has a darker legacy. Slaves seized to pay their masters' debts were once auctioned off on the granite steps at your right. In 1892. 24-year-old James Taylor, a black man, was dragged from a cell by a mob of local whites and lynched nearby.

This Church Made History

As Chestertown grew, so did the need for a larger church. In 1772, parishioners built a new Anglican house of worship on a lot deeded from courthouse land. Chester Parish Church, as it was called, made religious history in 1780, when, in the spirit of Revolution, clergymen met here and renounced the term "Church of England" in favor of "Protestant Episcopal Church" -- a name later adopted throughout the United States. In 1882, the building was substantially remodeled and consecrated under its current name, Emmanuel Church.

Wooded Ozark hills and fertile prairies for this county of contrasts organized in 1845 and named for Captain James Lawrence of “Don’t give up the ship” fame. The first settlers, John Williams, located on Turnback Creek in 1831. Others with him turned back in discouragement. Southerners and later pioneers from other sections and Germans and Swedes and Waldensians settled the county.

Mount Vernon, the county seat, was platted by J.A. Allen, 1845. One of the first state tubercular hospitals west of the Mississippi was founded there, 1905. Early schools were White Oak (Presbyterian) Academy in the 1840’s near Verona; Collegiate Institute (1870’s) at Marionville which later became Ozark Wesleyan at Carthage; Christian College (1870’s) and a Presby. Academy (1880’s) at Mount Vernon; and Baptist College (1880’s) at Pierce City.

In the war years, 1861-1865, guerrilla bands and troops foraged the area. Mount Vernon was a Union post. With the coming of Frisco R.R., 1870, and Mo Pac, 1907, expansion of agriculture and growth of zinc and mining, county population boomed from 13,067 in 1870 to 31,662 by 1910.

Marker Reverse
A dairy, livestock, grain and fruit area, Lawrence County was once a leading lead and zinc producer. Lead found in the mid 1880’s at Aurora made it a roaring mining camp by 1890. Founded 1870, now on two railroads, Aurora is the county’s largest town. Mining was also done in Verona, founded 1868, and Stotts City, 1885, Pierce City, founded 1870, and early railroad division point, produces lime.

Near Mount Vernon is the so called Spanish Fort built by prehistoric tribes. Indians roamed the area , part of the Osage land cession, into the 1830’s. Near Verona are site of what it said to be the first Sunday School in the western Ozarks, founded 1840 by J.M. White; the spring forming Spring River and Red Mill. At Pierce City is Harold Bell Wright Library in an 1873 building where he was once pastor. Chesapeake State Fish Hatchery and park are in the county.

Agricultural scientist, educator, William Jasper Spillman (1863-1931) and soil expert, educator, geologist, Curtis Fletcher Marbut (1863-1935) were born in Lawrence County. M.T. Davis, Comm. 1904 La. Purchase Cent. Exposition, lived in Aurora.

California Square

California, San Mateo County, Redwood City
California Square was a parcel of land located north of Marshall Street, between Hamilton and Winslow, diagonally located across the street from the Courthouse. The site was originally designated as a public park plaza in the Town of Mezesville survey of 1854 by Simon Mezes, who played a large part in the establishing of Redwood City and was the town’s first subdivider.

This was one of two blocks of land in the town site survey donated for public use by Mezes. The other piece of land at Warren and Standish streets, now called Mezes Park, is still in use as Mezes had originally intended. These blocks are believed to be the first property in California donated for public use and recreation.

Beginning with the construction of the Hall of Justice and Records in 1958, the entire block has been developed in the years following as part of the San Mateo County Government Center administrative and court complex.
