A Once Promising Canal Becomes a Raceway

0
0
Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Beginning in 1829, the Rappahannock Company constructed a series of dams and canals along the river, to transport bulk cargo. Gold had been found in Spotsylvania County in 1806 and a canal could bring heavy equipment and other materials to the area’s numerous mines. Gold production grew in the Rappahannock valley during the 1830s and 40s and the Town of Fredericksburg invested heavily in the canal enterprise that appeared to support a promising future.

Extracting gold by crushing quartz required heavy equipment and proved expensive. When the California gold strikes in 1849 drew mining companies to the West, Virginia mining declined. The canal system had been extended 50 miles upriver, but insufficient revenues forced it to close in 1853. The Fredericksburg Water Power Company constructed a dam across the river and turned this part of the system into a raceway. The new millrace supported several local industries.

(sidebar)
In 1849, the U.S. Mint received $129,382 in Virginia gold, while receiving $5.5 million in California gold.

(captions)
When the Fredericksburg Water Power Company constructed a dam across the Rappahannock River, it included a canal lock at the dam, to allow continued navigation to the upriver reaches.

Early plans for a canal were developed by Laomi Baldwin, in 1817. The navigation company had to build a bridge where its canal cut Fall Hill Road. The original stone bridge abutment is visible under the modern bridge in front of you. The concrete on top of the stones is an adaptation for a 1950s bridge. Panel design by Jackson Foster, The I.D. Confederate Defenses in December 1862

Fredericksburg, Virginia.
In December 1862, General Robert E. Lee deployed his Confederate army along a series of hills around the town of Fredericksburg. In front of you is Fall Hill, which anchored the Confederate line at the Rappahannock River. Brigadier General Cadmus M. Wilcox and his brigade of Alabama troops took position around a brick mansion at the top of the hill and spread out across the high ground.

On December 11th, Union artillery bombarded the Town of Fredericksburg in support of Federal infantry forcing its way across the river. Many of the town’s residents fled west, along this roadway. On December 13th, the Federals launched several attacks in town and south of town. There was no attack in this area, although Union artillery across the river still delivered an intense fire.

(captions)
Union topographical engineers developed this map to accompany the Chief of Artillery’s report on the December battle of Fredericksburg. It shows the heavy concentration of cannons on the opposite side of the river that could fire into this area.

On December 13, 1862, Wilcox and his Alabamians held this end of the Confederate line as the Federals attacked the heights near town. This map is oriented to the direction you are facing and also shows the modern road network to help relate the battle action to the ground. Panel design by Jackson Foster, The I.D. Entity

Water Powered Industries

Fredericksburg, Virginia.
In 1855, the Fredericksburg Water Power Company adapted the Rappahannock Company’s navigation canal to be an industrial power canal. The canal turning basin became a mill pond and several raceways soon branched off to power the Germania Flour Mill and the Washington Woolen Mills. In 1887, a local firm established an electric generating plant on Fredericksburg’s lower canal, which introduced electricity to the Rappahannock valley.

Electricity rapidly became the main power source for the area’s industrial enterprises. In 1901, the City of Fredericksburg established a municipal power plant on a raceway fed by this upper canal. In 1910, the Fredericksburg Water Power Company constructed the Embrey Dam to increase the potential horsepower flowing through this canal. The enhanced raceway fed into a new hydro-electric power plant, which remained in operation into the 1960s.

(sidebar)
The Washington Woolen Mills opened before the Civil War and operated into the twentieth century. A newspaper article from May 8, 1922 reported:
“The business today has a trade territory embracing the entire United States and requiring a staff of 26 travelling men…. An office force of 20 is steadily employed…. About 400 mill employees are carried on the payroll…. The firm does an annual business of around $2,000,000.”

(captions)
A fire in 1875 caused significant damage and also cooked off a previously undiscovered Civil War shell. The mill owners quickly rebuilt an expanded plant and resumed operations.

This Civil War photo shows the Woolen Mills in use as a hospital, sheltering wounded Union soldiers from the 1864 battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House.

This 1878 map shows the extensive Woolen Mills complex. The inset includes both the upper and lower canals and also shows a portion of this upper canal’s flow being diverted to mills in downtown Fredericksburg. This third canal never materialized because it was superseded by electrical power, beginning in the 1880s.
