St. Mark's Episcopal Church

Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Finding "the wickedness unimaginable and appalling," the Rev. Joseph Cook organized St. Mark's Parish Jan. 27, 1868, in Cheyenne, Dakota Territory, then a railroad winter camp. The first church at 18th and Carey Avenue was dedicated in August 1868 and was the first church building erected and dedicated in Wyoming.
This present edifice was constructed in 1886 and was patterned after Stoke Poges Church, Buckinghamshire, England.
The ministry of St. Mark's is historically linked with the settling and development of the frontier west. The church register records the burial service of a cavalryman killed by Indians, the wedding of an acting governor, and use of the Parish Hall as a social and cultural center.
The Rev. George Rafter, Rector, was asked to "pray over" Tom Horn during his public hanging in November 1903.
In August 1915, the wife and three children of General John J. Pershing were buried with solemn military rites from this church. They lost their lives in a tragic fire at the Presidio, San Francisco. Hundreds of cavalry troops from Fort D.A. Russell participated in the burial procession.
On Sunday Oct. 11, 1936, President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt worshipped here.

1980 Capitol North National Historic District

Cheyenne, Wyoming.
The Capitol North Historic District of Cheyenne was built between 1905-1930 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This district presents a good blend of middle to upper income housing for the period. Many of the home styles are frame construction with clapboard siding, brick, and brick veneers that were common in the period. Several of the older buildings within the district were moved in from Fort D.A. Russell (now F.E. Warren Air Force Base) as the fort changed from wooden structures to the brick ones you see today.
This district, consisting of approximately 12 city blocks, is located primarily to the North of the State Capitol. Because of its proximity to the State Capitol and other State buildings, this district provided housing for officials of the State to include Governors, State Legislatures, lawyers, judges, and other related professionals.
Some of the key buildings in this district include: The Luke Voorhies House, 2819 Thomes, 1884; The Charles Hirsig House, 2800 Carey Avenue, 1922; The J.B. True House, 2800 Capitol Avenue, 1922; The Cyrus Beard House, 2710 Carey Avenue, 1911; The Moses P. Keefe House, 210 W. 27th Street, 1910; Governor Leslie Miller Home, 108 W. 27th Street, 1908; The W.E. Chaplin House, 2622 Central Avenue, 1910; The A.A. Underwood House, 214 W. 26th Street, 1905; and the D.S. Swan House, 2612 Central Avenue, 1915.

Site of Cheyenne's Carnegie Public Library -- 1901-1966

New York, Dec. 27, 1899
Robert C. Morris, Esq.,
Dear Sir: Your favor of the 16th instant received. When the city of Cheyenne is willing to furnish a proper site for a free public library and maintain it at a cost of not less than $3,000 a year, I shall be glad to give $50,000 for the building.
A public library cannot be maintained for less than $3,000, and really should be $4,000 per year.
Very truly yours,
Andrew Carnegie

The Cheyenne Carnegie Public Library was located on the southeast corner of West 22nd Street and Capitol Avenue, and was a County Library rather than a City Library. The first Carnegie built in Wyoming (1 of 16), it was replaced in 1966 and torn down in 1971. A bronze plaque from the Library is located in the current County Library just a few blocks west of its former location.
Carnegie libraries are libraries which were built with money donated by Scottish-American businessman Andrew Carnegie. Over 2,500 Carnegie libraries were built, including public and university. Carnegie earned the nickname Patron Saint of Libraries.
Of the 2,500 libraries funded between 1883 and 1929, 1,689 are built in the United States. Very few towns that requested a grant and agreed to his terms were refused. When the last grant was made in 1919, there were 3,500 libraries in the United States, nearly half of them paid for by Carnegie.
In the early 20th Century, a Carnegie library was the most imposing structure in hundreds of small American communities from Maine to California. Most of the library buildings are unique, displaying a number of different styles, including Italian Renaissance, Baroque, Classic Revival and Spanish Colonial. Each style was chosen by the community and was typically simple yet formal, welcoming patrons to enter through a prominent doorway, nearly always accessed via a staircase. The staircase was intended to show that a person was elevating himself. Similarly, outside virtually every branch a lamppost or lantern symbolized enlightenment.

Mennonite Centennial Memorial

Peabody, Kansas.

This monument is an expression of deep gratitude

— to the City of Peabody for receiving the Mennonite immigrants, extending hospitality to them, and now granting a plot for this memorial,

— to the Santa Fe Railroad for directing the Mennonite immigrants to a productive land and making it available under favorable terms,

— to our government for respecting conscience, rewarding industry, and granting freedom for Christian outreach,

— to our God for His leading and continued blessing.

During the 1870's and the early 1880's about eight thousand Mennonites migrated from the Steppes of south Russia to America, and arrived near this spot in Peabody, Kansas. Because of their dedication to God and their faith in Jesus Christ, they sought a land where their desire for religious freedom would be honored.

America became that land. The terms of the Santa Fe Railroad and those of the government for land purchases were attractive, and the vast, fertile plains and favorable climate made Kansas their choice. The record of the past one hundred years reveals that the Mennonites made a wise decision.

Peabody and the neighboring communities became the port of entry for the Russian Mennonites to the Kansas rolling prairies. The Turkey Hard Red Winter Wheat became the origin of the hard winter wheat grown in America and has made Kansas the largest wheat producing state in the nation.

Though an agricultural people, these immigrants also recognized the importance of providing for the spiritual, cultural, and physical needs of themselves and others. They plowed the sod but also established churches, schools, and hospitals.

Distinctive to the Mennonite heritage are the principles of peace and compassion. The Mennonites believed that a disciple of Jesus Christ should heal the wounds of individuals and nations rather than inflict them. Churches and colleges have been instrumental in providing programs of outreach in missions and voluntary service. Through the years they have had many opportunities to extend a helping hand to suffering mankind around the world. They felt compelled by the love of God to help alleviate suffering, especially when natural disasters struck.

Erected this 27th day of July, 1974, by the Mennonite Inter-Church Centennial Committee, Hillsboro, Kansas.

St. John's Lutheran Church

Winters, Texas.
Fritz Armbrecht, accompanied by his friend August Spill, Sr., was reportedly the first Lutheran to arrive in this area. The men came from Comal County in the 1880s and bought property, bringing their families here in 1890. Armbrecht’s land included the present site of the city of Winters; in 1892, he sold 100 acres for the city center and later donated two acres for use as a cemetery.
As more Lutheran families arrived, the time was right to organize a church. The Mission Board of the Texas Synod of the Lutheran Church sent missionaries to lead services held in homes and schools. Families dedicated a sanctuary in the downtown Winters area in October 1904 and formally organized on November 6 of that year as St. John’s Lutheran Church. Members learned the railroad line would run adjacent to their property when it arrived in 1909, so they built a new sanctuary on the west side of town. Facilities have expanded over the years and include the present sanctuary, constructed in 1930. The congregation grew, and its members participated actively in Winters’ development and social activities. Many parishioners operated local businesses, and others entertained the community with their musical talents.
Although church members served in the U.S. Armed Forces, local anti-German sentiment during the First World War led to the congregation minimizing its services, which were held in German; relations slowly mended following the war. During the Second World War, congregation members maintained their visible and patriotic role in support of U.S. involvement overseas.
St. John’s members continue to serve their local and global communities. The church remains a spiritual home for many in the Winters area.
