Newark, New Jersey.
Newark’s second oldest Episcopal parish was founded in 1837. The architect of the present brown freestone building, completed in 1848, was the famed Richard Upjohn, a master of English Gothic style. In 1882 Samuel A. Ward, a choir-master here, composed a hymn tune that later became the melody of “America the Beautiful.” Since the 19th century Grace Church has been noted for its choral music and Angelo-Catholic worship. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1988.

Newark Female Charitable Society

Newark, New Jersey.
Founded in 1803, the Newark Charitable Society (now called the Newark Day Center) is one of the oldest social service agencies in the United States. After a plea from the pulpit of Old First Presbyterian Church, “Your neighbor is suffering, therefore devise some means to assist,” a group of Newark women met in the home of Rachel Boudinot and proposed “to devise some means for caring for the poor and distressed persons in the village.” Each member paid one dollar in annual dues, they were organized into officers and managers, and the Society established its criteria for distributing help. The plan of the Society was to help people help themselves. Food and clothing were given in emergencies. However, employment was found whenever possible or women were taught new skills that could help them earn a living. As times changed and Newark Female Charitable Society grew, it continued to address the problems of the community through programs for widows, single mothers, girls, boys, and the elderly.

“Surely the women of 1803 would be pleasantly surprised by the changes over the long years. The snowball they started rolling in the age of Jefferson has grown larger, and changed shape…however times have changed, Newarkers of 1803 and 1903 would recognize the mission as the same: to lift up the hearts of the neglected, to bring them inot a healthier, happier, less depressing life, by whatever means can be found at hand. Lives have been saved in the past…and with the continuing help of our citizens, many more will continue to be saved.” –Joseph Ricciardi (from “The Newark Day Center: An Old tree bearing fruit”)

Kenner, Louisiana.
The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when troops from Communist North Korea invaded South Korea. The United Nations called the invasion a violation of international peace and demanded that the Communist withdraw. Sixteen UN member nations sent troops to help the South Koreans with the United States sending more than 90 percent of the troops, military equipment and supplies. As one of the bloodiest wars in history, over 580,000 UN and South Korean troops were killed in the conflict. Many brave women serving in the Navy Nurse Corps in Korean combat zone provided care to wounded United States soldiers fighting as part of the UN force against the North Koreans. The war ended on July 27, 1953 when the UN and North Korea signed a truce. A permanent peace treaty has never been signed.

Gilbert Elementary School

Gilbert, Arizona.
This is the third elementary school in Gilbert and was built in 1913. The first two schools were part of the Mesa School District. Everett Wilbur, who later became Gilbert’s first mayor in 1920, donated the land where this school was built. The east wing of the school was built in 1913 and had four classrooms, two offices, a central assembly room and a large entryway into the building. The building had no inside plumbing, and there were two outside toilets. A well south of the building provided fresh water. A furnace in the basement provided heat in the winter. During this period about 85 pupils attended the school.

In 1916 a north wing was constructed. This wing consisted of two basement rooms and two classrooms just above ground level. A water fountain was installed for the teachers and students. In 1925 the south wing was built adding two additional classrooms. By 1931 the population of students had risen to 281.

This school closed in 1977. In 1982 the Gilbert Historical Society began leasing the building and opened it as a museum in May of that year. In 1985 the society purchased the building from the school district for $255,000 thanks to a donation by Otto and Edna Neely. It is the only building in Gilbert on the National Register of Historic Places.

Granville, Ohio.
Side A
The Elias Gilman House
The original structure, the central portion of the current house, is the oldest frame building in the village. It was built in 1808 by Elias Gilman, a prominent figure from Granville Massachusetts, who led the first family party to Ohio to establish a new settlement. In the home's early years, it served as a post office, library, retail store, and select school. The initial meeting of the Freemasons of Granville was held in the home in 1811 and the local Women's Christian Temperance Union organized here in the 1880s . A large spring to the west of the house supplied the village with water throughout the 19th century. The house has been an integral part of community life for over 200 years.

Side B
The Wee White House
Chi Psi Delta, a local sorority, purchased the home in 1904, making the first sorority house at Denison University . The group would eventually become part of the national Greek organization Kappa Alpha Theta. The "Wee White House," as it became known, has been home to the Beta Tau Chapter of KAΘ since 1929. The house has endured several changes throughout the years, including the 1830s addition of the Classical Revival style porch, with Doric columns of solid walnut, and the construction of the north living room in 1863. The west wing was added in 1958. In spite of numerous alterations, this beloved home, now owned by Denison University, retains its historic charm.

An Early Center of Education / Educating Young Women

Granville, Ohio.
Side A
An Early Center of Education
Just three weeks after reaching Granville, pioneer villagers decided on December 9, 1805 to build a log cabin where eighty children would attend school. By 1820, public school classes were being held in a three-story brick building. When rail lines and the National Road bypassed the village, dreams of becoming an industrial and commercial center were dashed. Educational institutions, however, thrived and by the Civil War Granville's citizens had organized the following: the Granville Literary and Theological Institution, later called Granville College and then renamed Denison University; the Granville Female Seminary, the Granville Episcopal Female Seminary, the Young Ladies' Institute, the Granville Female Academy, and the Granville Male Academy. As Granville enters its third century, educational excellence continues to attract students to the community's schools.

Side B
Educating Young Women
Granville's citizens were early advocates of advanced education for women. By 1827, thirty young ladies attended a "Select School." The Granville Congregational Church, today's Presbyterian Church, formalized these classes and established the Granville Female Academy in 1833—first in the Old Academy Building and in 1837 on East Broadway. On this site in 1832, Charles Sawyer founded the Granville Female Seminary, a Baptist institution. The Episcopal Female Seminary purchased and used the buildings for its school from 1838 to 1861. Marsena Stone then purchased this site in 1861 for the Young Ladies' Institute, which had begun in 1859 in the Baptist church. Stone's successor was Daniel Shepardson and when he retired in 1888, the institution was renamed Shepardson College. In 1900, Shepardson College consolidated with Denison University.

To accomplish this, large doors were built into the building. The tracks, engineered up Clear Creek Canyon, reached the depot on December 17, 1872. The great stone depot served as Colorado Central Railroad’s Clear Creek terminus until a track was built to Central City in 1878.
