The Bellamy Road

near Keystone Heights, Florida.
The Old Bellamy Road intersects Highway 100 near this point. In 1824, the First session of the 18th United States Congress appropriated $20,000.00 to develop a public road in the Territory of Florida between Pensacola and St. Augustine. It was to follow as nearly as possible on the pre-existing Old Mission Trail.

The St. Augustine to Tallahassee segment was contracted to John Bellamy. He completed this in 1826, using Native American guides and his own slaves. Remnants of the old sand road are used today and part of the Bellamy Road forms the county line between northwest Putnam and southwest Clay County.

What Is It?

0
0
Cape May Point, New Jersey.
This bunker or gun emplacement was built in 1942. The round turrets on either side held 6 inch guns. The horseshoe shaped structures which can be seen out in front of low tide are panama mounts. These were built in July 1941 prior to the construction of the more permanent bunker and held four 155mm coast artillery guns. A sister bunker stands across the bay in Lewes Delaware.

When built in 1942, the bunker was covered over with sod and stood on high ground 900 feet from the ocean. It is built of reinforced concrete. The roof and walls are 6 feet thick. Erosion and storms have washed away the land in front of and under the bunker. How long can the pilings (meant only to stabilize) support the bunker weighing thousands of tons?

Club Arrowhead in the Pines

0
0
near Lake Arrowhead, California.
Club Arrowhead Villas was constructed and dedicated in 1926 by The Atkins Corporation as seen on the pillared entrance to Arrowhead Villas. It was to be a luxury resort catering to wealthy patrons from across the country seeking adventure and relaxation in the San Bernardino Mountains. This isolated enclave included an opulent dinning club house, country inn and market, and a sports facility. The development was built in the English Tudor style and was equipped with modern amenities such as electric lighting, but retained a rustic mountain flair that featured riding stables, a ski run, tennis courts and an Olympic size swimming pool.

In 1929 the Great Depression arrived and combined with the heady days of the Roaring 20’s and the Prohibition Era a new age was ushered in that brought moonshine, gambling and dance hall girls. The club house transformed into a casino, the inn became a brothel, and the aquifers that watered the pool house soon began to water a taste for the “shine”, all under the watchful eyes of Los Angeles mobsters and rumored management by Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel.

By the early 1950’s, again the times had changed, Club Arrowhead Villas became a respectable community establishment once more, with only the ghosts of the past still wandering these many rooms. Even today these ghost stories abound, of Violet, a working girl killed by a jealous mobster, whose perfume waifs as she wanders the halls ...of a small boy killed by a passing ice truck whose foot steps are found in the fresh morning snow,... and of the young Indian maiden who asks for help to cross the sometimes raging waters of Fleming Creek.

With a dedication to California’s historical past, these properties have been reunited and fully restored in a new vision of The Atkins Corporation as a place for the arts and entertainment for visitors and mountain residents alike. The casino has become The Tudor House, the inn has become The Bracken Fern Manor, and the pool house has become The Club House… that now again waters the tastes of all who come.

...and, once in a great while, the spring breeze carries the scent of violets still...

Waveland Clock Tower

0

Chicago, Illinois.
Originally known as the Lincoln Park Fieldhouse and Carillon Tower, the Waveland Clock Tower was constructed in 1931. The English Gothic style building was designed by Edwin H. Clark and the chimes were from the Deagan Company of Chicago.
The Waveland area of Lincoln Park is part a landfill extension project which had begun in 1916, but progressed slowly. Completed in the late 1920s, the landfill enlarged the park from Cornelia Ave. northward to Montrose Ave., and included a golf course by the noted designer, E.B. Dearie. As the types of active recreation were growing in popularity at this time, tennis courts and athletic fields were also included in the extension.
The fieldhouse provided park patrons with shower, locker and rest rooms, club and craft rooms. A separate small refreshment stand building, also designed by Edwin H. Clark, was originally operated by the Brauer Co. While the field house was being designed, the Commissioners received a $50,000 bequest for the carillon towner from the estate of Mrs. Annie M. Wolforth, who died in 1926. The donation was made in memory of her husband, Jacob A. Wolforth, a member of the Chicago Board of Trade for forty years. The Wolfoths had enjoyed the chimes of a bell tower in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and wanted Chicago to have a similar carillon. The seven story tower was incorporated into the fieldhouse design, and for seal years the chimes were played daily at regular intervals. This proved to be disruptive to the surrounding community, however, and was eventually discontinued. In 1990, a group of volunteers worked with the Chicago Park District to restore the carillon.

Melamerson Athletic Field

Chicago, Illinois.

Dorothy Melamerson lived most of her life in Lincoln Park. A Fitness enthusiast, she was a gym teacher at Stone Elementary School and other public schools for 36 years. When she retired in 1977, she began an education of her own: how to make her savings grow. The effort was not for herself, however. Her happiness came from simpler pleasures, such as being outside to bicycle or walk the park. The real beneficiary was to be the physical well-being of children, a cause to which she had devoted her life. Her modest lifestyle and wise investing led to a most generous gift when she died in 1994 at age 74, $900,000 to be used to upgrade facilities and begin youth sports programs in Chicago Park District properties in the 43rd Ward where she had lived. Close to $600,000 of the estate went into the 1996-[9]7 renovation of Oz Park athletic field and playlot. Thanks to Dorothy Melamerson's generous spirit, her enthusiasm for youth fitness lives on in this park, where hundreds of youth are reaping the benefits of the real Wizard of Oz.

The Last Naval Battle of the American Revolutionary War

0

Merritt Island, Florida.
The last naval battle of the American Revolutionary War took place off the coast of Cape Canaveral on March 10, 1783. The fight began when three British ships sighted two Continental Navy ships, the Alliance commanded by Captain John Barry and the Duc De Lauzun commanded by Captain John Green sailing northward along the coast of Florida. The Alliance, a 36-gun frigate, and the Duc De Lauzun, a 20-gun ship, were loaded with 72,000 Spanish silver dollars they were bringing from Havana, Cuba to Philadelphia to support the Continental Army. One of the British ships, the HMS Sybil, a 28-gun frigate, commanded by Captain James Vashon, chased the Alliance and Duc De Lauzun to the south. The HMS Sybil fired first, exchanging shots with the slower Duc De Lauzun. Then in a daring strategy Captain John Barry aboard the Allinace reversed his course, and while under fire, waited until the HMS Sybil was close. When the British ship was alongside he returned fire to the broadside with greater number of cannon. The battle lasted less than an hour, when the HMS Sybil, outgunned and badly damaged, broke off from the battle and fled. The Alliance and Duc De Lauzun then continued on their mission at dawn on March 11, 1783.

Provost Hall

Merritt Island, Florida.
Provost Hall was originally constructed in 1910 as the Georgiana Club house on land provided by Charles D. Provost and his wife Gertrude Breese Provost. Until their grandchildren, Charles D. Provost and his sister, Mary Virginia Provost Katz, gave the hall to the Georgianna United Methodist Church in 1992 the Georgiana Club house was used for community functions. The functions included the children’s Christmas Eve party; the Georgiana Club meeting and card party fund-raiser; Memorial Day services; and, the Fall Youth party and dance. During WWI it was the focus of many Georgiana Red Cross Auxiliary Unit (GRCAU) functions to sew items for the war effort. A fund-raising mid-winter ball was held on March 1, 1917 by the GRCAU with the KMI military school orchestra providing the music. The Club house was packed to capacity with people from all over Brevard County. The Club house was also the voting precint for Georgiana residents for many years beginning in the 1930s. Presently Provost Hall plays a vital role in the ministry of Georgianna United Methodist Church and its WAVE (Wave of the Future) Youth Groups.
