Arrival of the Strip Mall

El Sobrante, California.
Hill View Center, El Sobrante's first strip mall, was constructed in 1960. Though the businesses have changed over the years, the appearance of the complex has changed very little. The "ranch house" architectural style was very popular during this era and its adaptation to commercial use on this center seemed perfectly compatible was the tracts of ranch-style homes being built in El Sobrante at the time.

El Sobrante, California.
El Sobrante gets its name from Rancho El Sobrante, "surplus land situated between existing ranchos that in 1841 was granted by the government of Mexico to brothers Juan Jose and Victor Castro. Curiously, El Sobrante's downtown is actually within Rancho San Pablo, an earlier Castro family grant. The Rancho El Sobrante boundary lies 1/4 mile east of and parallel to Appin Way. By the late 1800s, the Castros had lost or sold most of their land. Victor Castro's son, Patricio, continued ranching for most of his life on 100-acres along Castro Ranch Road.

El Sobrante's first free-standing post office opened in this building in 1957, marking an important milestone in the town's development. The post office was previously located in the adjacent Lee's Variety Store (the Elks Lodge as of 2014) and before that was located in a local grocery store. The post office remained here until projected growth necessitated building a larger and more modern facility on Appian Way.

Western history owes the Carter Brothers a great debt, for they were the general contractors for the first six narrow gauge railroads in California. From 1874 to 1902 they built freight, passenger, cable and street cars. Their plant became Newark's first industry. Their cable cars are still in operation on San Francisco hills.

West Dundee, Illinois.

This New England style farmhouse was built circa 1848, by Samuel Wilder to resemble his former New York State home. Robert and Lucy Duff purchased this property in 1868; however, historians claim they lived at this location during the Civil War and that the Duff House was a station on the "Underground Railroad". The mission of the "Underground Railroad" was to secretly assist runaway slaves by a loosely constructed network of escape routes that originated in the South, intertwined throughout the North, and eventually ended in Canada. Stories are told of slaves from the South hidden in the cellar of the Duff House. In the dark of night, Robert Duff transported them by wagon to another station, Buena Vista Corners, 6 miles west of town, to continue their journey to freedom.

May this plaque serve as an everlasting memorial for all who suffered hardship and uncertainty to build a better life for future generations.

British Naval Blockade and Cape Henry Lighthouse / The War of 1812

Fort Story, Virginia.
British Naval Blockade and Cape Henry Lighthouse During the War of 1812, a British naval blockade along much of the U.S. East Coast disrupted foreign trade and interfered with commerce. On 4 Feb. 1813, the blockade was extended to the Chesapeake Bay. At that time, the light at the Cape Henry Lighthouse was extinguished to prevent British ships from using it as a navigational aid. The British attacked the lighthouse early in Feb. 1813, and thereafter British scouting parties often visited the area to obtain fresh water from local wells. On 14 July 1813, Capt. Richard Lawson of the Princess Anne militia captured 20 British marines nearby.
The War of 1812 Impressment of Americans into British service and the violation of American ships were among the causes of America’s War of 1812 with the British, which lasted until 1815. Beginning in 1813, Virginians suffered from a British naval blockade of the Chesapeake Bay and from British troops’ plundering the countryside by the Bay and along the James, Rappahannock, and Potomac rivers. The Virginia militia deflected a British attempt to take Norfolk in 1813, and engaged British forces throughout the war. By the end of the war, more than 2000 enslaved African Americans in Virginia had gained their freedom aboard British ships.

The building has stories to tell
It can tell about first being built as an electric plant before being converted to manufacturing in 1905. There are memories of 1916 when it became the first Dodge dealership outside Detroit, later becoming a Willys-Overland-Whippet car dealership. But Hudson Sales & Service is its claim to fame, as Carl Miller sold Hudson cars here for 25 years, until 1958, as the world's last Hudson dealer. This building really found its voice in 1995, reborn as the Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum.

The Baker-Peters-Rogers House

Knoxville, Tennessee.
(side 1)
The Baker-Peters-Rogers House is significant for its history and its architecture. The surroundings of the house have changed drastically since its construction c. 1840. The house was the center of an extensive farm in west Knox County. It faced Kingston Pike, the overland route to settlements west of Knoxville, and sat on a much larger tract of land tan it presently occupies. As development occurred around the house, its surrounding acreage was sold until, in 1989, only a small portion of the original tract remained. However, the house still faces Kingston Pike, and is located on its original site.

Kingston Pike offered good transportation access to Knoxville and more western settlements. The Baker-Peters-Rogers House follows the location patterns of many of the larger houses of Knox County built before the Civil War, which were located to capture river access or along on the the major roadways. Kingston Pike has continued to provide that accessibility, which has contributed to the desirability of the property for commercial uses. The house has been the site of several restaurants, and its location led Phillips Petroleum Company to select it as a potential station location in late 1988.

The Baker-Peters-Rogers House was built as the home of Dr. James Harvey Baker, a prominent local physician. Some accounts of Dr. Baker's activities during the Civil War report him as being aligned with Confederate troops, while others recount his neutrality. Whatever his allegiances, his son Abner was fighting with the Confederates. Dr. Baker was at home in 1864 and had been treating wounded Confederate soldiers. Union soldiers visited the home and, racing upstairs to a bedroom, shot and killed Dr. Baker through the barricaded bedroom door. (Continued on other side) (side 2) (Continued from other side) When Dr. Baker's son Abner returned after the war, at the age of 22, he shot and killed the Knoxville postmaster William Hall in an attempt to avenge his father's death. Several of the postmaster's accomplices heard of Abner's action, and ambushed and killed him. A marker on the front lawn of the house memorializes Abner Baker. it was erected by the Abner Baker Chapter of the United Daughter's of the Confederacy.

Dr. Bakers house was sold in the 1800's to the George Peters family, which lived there until the V.M. Rogers family purchased the house and 300 acres in the early 20th century. In recent years the house has been used as a restaurant, first as Jeremiah's, and more recently as the home of Hawkeye's Corner Too. Phillips Petroleum, after purchasing the property,, became aware of the strong citizen interest in saving the structure through a special public meeting on January 3, 1989 attended by 400-500 persons concerned about the possible demolition of the house. Phillips Petroleum then made a commitment to assist the community in preserving the landmark structure.

The service station was then located to the west of the house on a separate parcel expanded for that purpose. The house was subsequently sold to Dr. Larry Tragesser for use as offices, retaining its historic fabric.

The propeller is from the USS Intrepid (CV-11) aka "The Fighting I", an Essex Class Carrier built during World War II. Intrepid was launched on 26 April 1943 across the river at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. She has one of the most distinguished service records of any Navy ship, seeing active service in the Pacific Theater including the Marshall Islands. Truk, Leyte Gulf, and Okinawa. At war's end, she supported occupation forces by providing air support and supply services. Not only was she a war fighter, she also participated in the Gemini and Mercury space programs as a recovery ship.

After 30 years of distinguished service Intrepid was retired and scheduled for disposal until a campaign saved her and she was converted to a museum in 1982. Four years later the ship was designated as a National Historic Landmark and is now moored in New York City. Over the years "The Fighting I" has hosted many special events including wrestling events, press conferences, parties and was designated an FBI operations center immediately following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

This concrete circular gun mount remains as part of a 16 inch howitzer battery built to defend the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. The battery was active until the final days of World War II when it was declared obsolete and scrapped. The below photo of gun number one of Battery Walke is a typical representation of a 16 inch howitzer battery.

When the US Army established Fort Story in 1917 there was initially no family housing provided. Between World War I and II a limited number of NCO quarters were built and some families lived in former Cape Henry civilian quarters taken over by the Army in the late 1950s the first Army family quarters were constructed these buildings were the predecessor of the beach community homes built for military personnel in the modern Cape Henry village constructed under the Army's residential communities initiative.
