Hinman Hall

Fort Bliss, Texas.
Hinman Hall, named for Brigadier General Dale Durkee Hinman who commanded the Antiaircraft Artillery Training Center at Fort Bliss in 1943, was the administrative headquarters for the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School for over 50 years. It was designed by the Dallas architectural firm of Landauer, Guerrero and Shafer and was built by the R. E. McKee Construction Company of El Paso at a cost of $2.7 million. The building's modernist design was in bold contrast with the surrounding Queen Anne-style brick buildings. At its 1954 dedication ceremony, General John E. Dahlquist, Commanding General of Continental Army Command, stated, "Our new academic building - modern, streamlined, solid, strong - [exemplifying] the strength and growth of the anti-aircraft artillery and the importance of the activities now being conducted within its walls."

Over six decades, Hinman Hall served as a first-class facility for classroom training of the Hawk, Nike Ajax, and Nike Hercules, and later missile defense systems. At its peak, the school graduated more than 5,000 students each year from 58 allied nations. "The Air Defense School", as it soon became known, and its large international contingent prompted the Fort Bliss News to refer to it as a "little United Nations all by itself." The legacy of Hinman Hall is the training programs of the USAADAS that proved instrumental in the defense of the United States and allied nations during the Cold War.

Geneva, Illinois.

Geneva played an important role in connecting the cities of the Fox River Valley to the Lincoln Highway. The city was eager to cater to the newly motoring public by offering well-lit, paved streets, a stop-and-go light, and a motorcycle policeman to assist the busy drivers.

Geneva's lively downtown offered travelers something for their every need: over a dozen service stations and garages, first class accommodations at Hotel Geneva and numerous restaurants and shops.

Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Welcome to wonderful Wyoming! As you travel through the state, your visit will be more enjoyable and interesting if you stay alert to one of Wyoming’s most precious treasurers—an abundance and diversity of free ranging wildlife. The wildlife and large expanses of wildlands make Wyoming unique and well worth exploring.

Wyoming is most famous for its large mammals. Free-ranging pronghorn, elk, mule, deer, bighorn sheep, moose and grizzly bear grace our wild places. Over half of the world’s population of pronghorns (also called antelope) reside here and the largest concentration of bighorn sheep in the country can be found each winter on Whiskey mountain near Dubois. The world’s largest concentrations of elk can be found in the northwest part of the state. When it comes to large native wildlife, Wyoming is blessed with both quantity and quality. As you drive through the state, your chances are excellent for seeing a variety of interesting wildlife species. Watch for coyotes, badgers, sage grouse and red foxes.

Scan the skies for golden eagles, prairie falcons and other unique nongame wildlife. If you travels include wetland areas, be on the lookout for great blue herons, shore-birds, sandhill cranes and white pelicans.

In your travels, you will find interpretive signs at highway rest areas calling your attention to wildlife-habitat relationships unique to each area. Pick up a loop tour guide and increase your viewing opportunities and learning experiences. Visit the Game and Fish Department Visitor Center in Cheyenne..

We hope your visit here is most memorable and we also believe you’ll agree Wyoming’s wildlife—is “Worth the Watching”.

The scene depicts a typical meeting of the Indian and the Mountain Man on the open plains of Wyoming during the time of western discovery and exploration in the early 1800’s.

At such meeting the offering of friendship would take place. The Indian is holding out a ceremonial buffalo horn filled with Rock Mountain “sweetwater” while the Mountain Man brings several beaver skins stretched on rounds of aspen branches.

Note that the Mountain Man holds his Muzzle Loading “long rifle” well away from his body with this hand over the muzzle to assure that it is harmless.

The Indian stands 12’6” and weight 3000 pounds. The Mountain Man, whose raised had reaches to 14’, weighs 2500 pounds.

Chenango Canal Walking Tour

Norwich, New York.
This view of the Chenango Canal is looking north toward the Maydole Hammer factory and Lock #93. The Hammer factory covered the area today (2007) occupied by the buildings of the Golden Age Apartments. The lock was located in the space that is now the Golden Age Apartments easternmost parking lot.

Lock Street (Lackawanna Avenue) was constructed in 1837 to facilitate deliveries from canal boats to the village. Lock Street ran along the south side of the Hammer Factory and terminated at the lock. A small portion of the street can be seen in front of the covered entry to the Hammer Factory on the left side o the photograph. You are standing very near that site.

David Maydole constructed the factory next to the lock so the waste water from Lock #93 could be used to power the grinding room machinery. The Maydole Hammer Factory was in continuous operation from 1848-1900; then sporadically during the 20th century. Most of the buildings burned September 2, 1957, and the remaining buildings were removed in 1970.

David Maydole invented the Adz-Eye Hammer that revolutionized the hammer industry because the hammer head did not fly off during use.

Thompson and Company Foundry and Machine Shop where iron fences and agricultural implements were produced. On the left side of the picture is part of a canal boat. This is the only known photograph of a canal boat in Norwich. Curving away in the distance on the left is the Norwich Gas and Light Company. The plant provided coal gas used to illuminate 18 lamp posts in the Village of Norwich.
