"Flatiron" Triangle Building

Auburndale, Florida.
Because this building occupies a corner position on a triangular shaped lot, it has been historically referred to as the "flatiron" building, deriving its nickname from the triangular shaped electric clothing press irons popularized in the 1920's. Constructed around 1912, the building is one of the oldest Masonary Venacular commercial structures in Auburndale's historic business district. It is believed to be the only commercial structure to survive all three fires that destroyed the heart of Auburndale's business sector in 1912, 1913, and 1915. The building was originally constructed as the First State Bank of Auburndale, which opened for business in 1912 but failed in the 1930's under duress of the Great Depression. Auburndale's most well known early local photographer, Alice Kaszer, once operated a photo shop in the building. Other commercial occupants have included a furniture store, post office, restaurant and professional office.

Patterson Retail Building

Auburndale, Florida.
Nearly all of the early commercial buildings in Auburndale were constructed from wood. As a result, three fires destroyed the heart of Auburndale's business sector in 1912, 1913, and 1915. The fire of 1913 was magnified by a great explosion that occurred when flames engulfed a large cache of dynamite. In response to the disaster, Mayor E. S. Anderson appointed a committee to draft a fire zone ordinance requiring fire resistant structures within the downtown commercial district. Because of this requirement, John Patterson, an active member of Auburndale's early business community, constructed the Patterson Retail Building in 1916 using masonry building techniques. The Masonary Vernacular building is an example of the style that became more common for commercial buildings of the 1920's. The Patterson Retail Building has been home to at least two drug stores and a professional office.

Auburndale, Florida.
The Seaboard Air Line Rail and the Atlantic Coast Line Rail played a major role in the development of the City of Auburndale, intersecting each other in the City and bringing passengers and commerce from around the State and Country to central Florida. Auburndale was served by two train depots, one located on the Seaboard Air Line's Rail and another on the Atlantic Coast Line's Rail. This Seaboard Air Line train depot, which is a masonry vernacular building in the Mediterranean style, was built in 1927 and was originally located near the intersection of Pilaklakaha Avenue and Pearl Street on the Seaboard's rail line. CSX closed the station in 1993 where it sat in disrepair and faced demolition until 2000 when the City of Auburndale purchased it with the intention of making it a municipal building. The City obtained grant funding from the Florida Department of State to relocate the building to its current location where the former Atlantic Coast Line train depot sat. The rehabilitation and restored building has served as a municipal building since 2002 and remains an important part of Auburndale's history.

This 1925 American LaFrance fire engine with its polished wooden bed and steering wheel, rare Italian tires and black leather seat was delivered to the City of Auburndale on June 23, 1925 via freight train. The City's first fire engine stayed in service until 1953. In the 1930's volunteer firefighter Nephi Darby gave the truck its nickname "Grandma" as he worked hard to keep it running and clean. The truck was restored in 1979 and was put on display in the Public Library on West Park Street. The truck was restored a second time after an arson fire in the library in 1982. In 1992, the truck was relocated alongside the Fire Station on Orange Street.

In 2001 the Fire Department moved to this location and the historic engine was moved into this building named in honor of Chief James A. Hancock, Jr. Chief Hancock worked for the City of Auburndale from 1951-1991 and served as Chief from February 20, 1956 until his retirement. He was named Outstanding Fire Chief in 1981 by the Florida Fire Chiefs' Association. His public service tenure remains one of the longest in the City's history.

Maumee, Ohio.
In 1995, after years of research, Dr. G. Michael Pratt led an archeological survey on a field west of the floodplain previously believed to be the site of the battle.

A successful dig turned up artifacts such as buckshot, rifle fragments and frog-legged eagle buttons, unique to Wayne's legion. This combined with a 2001 detailed remote sensing survey, became conclusive proof that the Battle of Fallen Timbers took place on the site where you currently stand.

Legion Buttons
———————————

These buttons were only worn by General Wayne's legion from 1792-1796. During the archeological dig, groupings of these buttons were found in great numbers at a location thought to be the shallow graves of fallen soldiers.
