The Southern New England Ice House on Birge Pond

0
0
Bristol, Connecticut.

For many years an icehouse stood on the southern shore of Birge Pond at the site of the present-day parking lot. In the days before refrigeration, ice was an important commodity and Birge Pond was the largest supplier of ice to the City of Bristol. The icehouse was by description a large barn about 60 feet long by 30 feet wide and was two stories tall. Packed in dry sawdust and ventilated so as to allow the escape of warm moist air, quality ice might keep for as long as 2 to 3 years. Originally owned by Eli Norton. The Southern New England Ice House, who retained ownership until 1933 when the icehouse, a victim of modern technology, was finally torn down.

Camp Ben McCulloch No. 946 United Confederate Veterans

0

Driftwood, Texas.
Hays County Confederate veterans and their families gathered for a reunion in the summer of 1896 and formally organized the Camp Ben McCulloch Chapter of the United Confederate Veterans. The gathering took place near this site at the Martin Spring and campsite on Onion Creek. The reunion grounds were purchased by the organization in 1904 and have continued as the site of the annual reunion with the exception of one year during World War I.

The first commander of Camp Ben McCulloch was Capt. Martin Luther Reed. Other officers elected at the first meeting were Jacob C. Quick, W.M. Weaver, W.W. Davis, W.T. Chapman, Dr. J.M. Pound, and Santa Anna Cruze. The camp was named for Confederate General Ben McCulloch, also a veteran of the Texas Revolution, who died in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, in 1862.

The reunion grounds and other responsibilities were transferred to the care of the Confederate Sons after Burl Nash, the last veteran in the county, died in 1947 at age 108. The Sons in turn deeded the camp to the grandsons and other descendants of the Confederate veterans. Reunions continue to be held, illustrating the ongoing impact of the Civil War on Texas history. Antioch Colony

Buda, Texas.
Antioch Colony was a rural farming community formed during Reconstruction by a group of formerly enslaved African Americans. Although freed from slavery after the Civil War, African Americans still found it difficult to purchase land. In 1859, Anglo businessman Joseph F. Rowley purchased 490 acres in north Hays County, along Onion Creek. He began selling parcels to former slaves in 1870 at $5.00 per acre. Rowley, perhaps in an effort to protect the new landowners from losing their property, indicated in many of the deeds that the African American owners could not sell the property without Rowley’s consent. After moving to Missouri, Rowley rescinded the stipulation in 1893, but the document was not filed in Hays County until 1913.

Community residents Elias and Clarisa Bunton donated property for a community school and church in 1874, and the building served as the school until 1939. The following year, the school was relocated to Black Colony Road and served Antioch until students were integrated into the Buda school system in 1961. A Baptist church and a Methodist church were organized in the community, and there was also an active Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star chapter in Antioch.

Antioch remained an active farm community through the 1930s and 1940s. By the 1950s, many residents had moved away in search of better employment opportunities and the community was virtually abandoned. Beginning in the 1970s former residents and their descendants began returning to Antioch, some purchasing the land that their ancestors had previously owned, and the community continues to grow.

Sanford, Florida.
(side 1)
Sanford High School was built in 1902. This Romanesque Revival Style brick building with its massive three story bell tower was designed by Architect W.G. Talley of Jacksonville. The building is one of the few surviving examples in Florida's turn-of-the-century school architecture.

A new high-school was constructed in 1911 and the building was re-named Sanford Grammar School. Sanford architect Elton Moughton designed two symmetrical one-story wings which were added in 1916. The exterior is graced by decorative corbelling, string and bell courses and recessed round arched entryways. Sanford Grammar School served public students through 1984. At that time, the building's purpose and name changed to the Student Museum and Center for the Social Studies. (Continued on other side) (side 2) (Continued from other side) The interior includes a Native American Room, Pioneer Room, a turn of the Century Classroom, doll collections, a Geography Lab, Grandma's attic and the Georgetown exhibit.

The building overlooks a park donated by the City's pioneer developer General Henry Shelton Sanford. Lush orange groves once stood on this park known as the George Touchy Park. Many of the trees have grown from seedlings of historic trees from around the nation. Other tree plantings honor notable Sanford residents.

The Student Museum is supported and operated by Seminole County Public Schools as an interpretive center and teaching Museum for grade school students. The Museum specializes in hands-on activities designed for integrated learning in an historic setting.

In 1984 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Chittenden County Trust Company

Burlington, Vermont.
This Beaux Arts-style building, with its symmetrical marble facades, prominent cornices, sculptural ancient Greek and Roman details, and arched windows and doors, was designed by famed Boston architects Harper & West at the request of the Chittenden County Trust Company in 1931. A massive fire on 1928 destroyed the former Y.M.C.A and McAuliffe Paper Company building, which allowed for the site to become the new headquarters for the growing bank. This iconic building, whose monumental marble appearence stands in sharp cpntrast to the prevalence of nineteenth century brick buildings on Church Street, is wrapped on marble from the world-famous Vermont Marble Co. of Proctor. Bank tellers and officers greeted customers through the grand, arched entry on Church Street into a vaulted, sun-filled banking hall backed by a two-story arched window looking west to City Hall Park. The Merchants Bank occupied the property from 1969 through 1994, with Bank President Dudley H. Davis proudly overseeing the growth of the Bank and the caretaking of the building. In 1995, Paul Frederick pape Jr. acquired the property, undertaking extensive renovations to welcome new retail and office tenants while maintaining the integrity of the original Harper & West design.

Liberty Tree Memorial

Pine Meadow, Connecticut.
This American Liberty Elm was named after “The Liberty Tree: Our Country’s first Symbol of Freedom.” On the morning of August 14, 1765, the people of Boston awakened to discover two effigies suspended from an elm tree in protest of the hated Stamp Act. From that day forward that elm tree became known as “The Liberty Tree.” It stood in silent witness to countless meetings, speeches and celebrations, and became the rallying place for the Sons of Liberty. In August of 1775, as a last act of violence prior to their evacuation of Boston, British soldiers cut it down because it bore the name “Liberty.”

In 1945 the hospital's facilities were moved to the Sanford Naval Base. The base closed in April of 1951 and the hospital facilities were moved back to 500 Oak in September and remained there until 1956. (Continued on other side) (side 2) (Continued from other side) Seminole Memorial Hospital
In January, 1956, the third hospital in Seminole County's history was dedicated with more than 4,000 local residents in attendance. The first patients were five babies that were moved from the old 500 Oak building to the new facility at 1101 E. First Street during lunch. On January 30, 1956. It was re-named the Seminole Memorial Hospital and remained under that name until 1982.

In 1980, the County sold the rights to operate the Hospital which led to the development of the Central Florida Regional Hospital located on 17/92 on Lake Monroe. It opened in June 1982.

The County renovated the old Seminole Memorial Hospital building and it has served as the County Services Facility since July 22, 1984, when the first Board of County Commissioners meeting was held.
