near Big Pine, California.
Zurich Station, formerly Alvord, was established in 1884 as a freight and passenger station on the Carson & Colorado Railway - known locally as "The Slim Princess."

Zurich was the main railroad station for Big Pine and points east. Its name was changed to Zurich in 1923 because the eastern slope of the Sierra reminded local resident Emelie Nikolaus of her native Switzerland.

The station fell into disuse during the 1940's and was abandoned when the railway ceased operation in 1960.

Pan-American Exposition

Buffalo, New York.

1901 Pan-American Exposition 2001
The Pan-American Exposition occupied this site from May to November 1901. An international fair, it highlighted the technological pre-eminence of the United States, and trade and cooperation among the Americas. Over 8 million people came to see displays of electricity, infant incubators, manufacturing equipment and other marvels of the day. Thomas Edison filmed the Exposition with his new motion picture camera. John Philip Sousa's band played. Gondolas circled the grounds on man made canals. Exotic midway attractions and stadium events were crowned at sundown everyday as lights came on all over the grounds. For most visitors it was their first encounter with a large scale display of electric light. The Exposition's organizers hoped that Buffalo's access to cheap hydro-electric power and the fact that 40,000,000 people lived within a half day's train ride would encourage industry to locate in the area.

On November 16, 1864, Union cavalry under Col. Benjamin Marsh captured a small Confederate force at Liberty. Marsh had hoped to capture Brig. Gen. George Hodge, but he escaped. The next day, Brig. Gen. Albert Lee reinforced the Federals with 1,700 men and three cannon. On November 18, Confederate cavalry attempted to retake the town. Moving up the Greensburg Road, Col. John Scott's men were forced to withdraw after an hour long engagement. On the nineteenth, Union forces returned to Baton Rouge.

On Sept. 24, 1810, a group of West Floridians on horseback, led by Gen. Philemon Thomas and his military aide, Col. Benj. Parker Thomas, seized the old Baton Rouge Fort, ending 30 yrs. of Spanish control of West Florida.

The General's daughter Elizabeth, wife and cousin of Benjamin, was buried here in 1841 and later four grandchildren. Benjamin died in 1835 and was probably buried here, but there are no records to verify it. Gravesites are lost.

B.P. Thomas was a Major in the War of 1812.

Seventh Street

Oakland, California.
Spine of West Oakland
The elevated BART tracks are the latest link in Seventh Street's long history as the transportation spine of West Oakland. The street once led to the long Wharf and Mole on the western waterfront where the Central/Southern Pacific maintained its transcontinental terminus. The ferry terminal served westbound passengers heading for San Francisco, and eastbound passengers boarding both local electric trams and steam trains for destinations across the country. The railroad's maintenance yards and shops covered hundreds of acres of reclaimed marsh south of Seventh Street. Industrial plants adjoined the overland tracks. This dynamic district supported West Oakland's richly diverse working-class culture.

Heart and Soul of West Oakland
West Oakland's neighborhoods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries included many families of African American, Latin American, Asian, and European origin. Among the largest immigrant communities were those from Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Mexico, each with its own network of churches, clubs and businesses. Seventh Street served as the commercial, social, and religious center for West Oakland's many ethnic groups, and the street abounded in Italian restaurants, Greek coffeehouses, Mexican grocery stores, and Black Churches.

Gospel, Blues, & Jazz
West Oakland's African American community, one of California's largest, was a cradle for the emerging art forms of blues and jazz. Railroad employees brought back the latest recordings, and pioneer jazzmen like King Oliver and Kid Ory came to town in the 1920s. Seventh Street became a celebrated music venue known for small clubs like the Creole Café, Bluebird Cabaret and most famously, Slim Jenkins'. West Oakland was also home to well-known musicians such as the bandleader Sidney LeProtti and guitarist Saunders King, a minister's son raised in a Pentecostal church on Seventh Street. Gospel was represented by the flamboyant King Louis H. Narcisse, founder of Mount Zion Spiritual Temple Church, who made his first recordings in a Seventh Street studio.
