Israel, Negev, Southern, near Be''er Sheva
The story of the Negev Brigade in the War of Independence (Nov, 1947 – March, 1949) The Brigade, whose ranks included local settlers, fought courageously against superior forces – Arab irregulars and the invading Egyptian Army – and defended the isolated settlements, roads, water conduits of the besieged Negev.

The Brigade played a vital role in a series of offensive operations that lead to the defeat of the Egyptian and Jordanian armies and the liberation of the entire Negev, from Beersheva to Eilat. A total of 324 of the brigade fighters, men and women, fell in battle.

The memorial was constructed thanks to the efforts of the late Micha Peri. It was designed by the sculptor Dan Karavan in 1963, and dedicated in 1968.

Its design and location express a special relationship between art, environment, and historical memory of the events. It is recognized as an important landmark in contemporary art.

Napa: A River Landing Town

Historic Commerce Along Napa River
As other modes of transportation became more dominant, the waterfront declined. But in the 21st century, Napa has turned again to embrace the river. Much of the riverfront as been redesigned and reconstructed, while the river corridor itself has been widened to provide natural flood protection for the City.

The River is Again the Heart of Commerce
The view from where you are standing provides a vantage point into the history of Napa's riverfront. Across the river, industrial buildings have been removed and contaminated sites cleaned, clearing the way for a widened river corridor. The restored floodplains and march plains are designed to keep water flowing between its banks, freeing the City from the constant threat of flooding. One can see trees planted in 2005 as part of the Napa River/Napa Creek Flood Protection Project, returning a repairman forest to the river. Downstream to the right, remnants of the 19th century Embarcadero de Napa are still visible. Overlooking the remnants are houses in the Historic Napa Abajo District - many of these houses were built by early ship captains.
With the emergence of the Napa Valley as a distinctive wine growing region, the commerce of Napa is largely based on tourism and the wine industry. The river is again a focal point of a community proud of its history and its river. The adjacent Napa Mill is a prime example of historic preservation of both buildings and the river heritage.

Banner Warehouse 1862

California, Napa County, Napa
This was the former site of Napa's original Embarcadero and home of two Banner warehouses constructed in 1862 and later acquired by Charles Carpy for wine storage. Captain A. Hatt purchased the property in 1895 for storage. Behind the current Embarcadero buildings, which was built in 1997, Hatt constructed a wharf on the Napa River in 1897 that included a derrick facilitating the loading and unloading of steamships. Hatt used the wharf for receiving and shipping his goods up and down the Napa River and to moor his personal schooner and small fleet of steamships used for shipping. As the shipping industry waned and the Napa Valley went from farming to grape growing, the wharf fell into disrepair and was removed.
Today the Embarcadero building is part of the Napa River Inn hotel operation with 26 guest rooms that feature a yacht cabin theme of cherry wood, porthole mirrors, wainscoting and coffered paneling.

This small building was constructed by Captain A. Hatt in 1893 with an accompanying wharf. This building may have been the first in Napa constructed of poured-in-place concrete reinforced with twisted square rebar. A rolling door in the southwest corner provided access to the wharf for loading operations. Napa Milling used the building for storage of agricultural chemicals and other products.

The Hay Barn was constructed in 1959 after an earlier hay barn building burned in the 1958 inferno. The building was rebuilt to allow sunken drive through access for hay trucks through the Main Street opening. The building is constructed of a myriad of building products on concrete pilings overhanging the Napa River. It was, of course, constructed with the most up-to-date fire sprinkler system.
The Hay Barn now hosts business offices, specialty shops and restaurants.

Texas, Jones County, Stamford
Founded 1930, jointly with Texas Cowboy Reunion—to "hand down to posterity, customs and traditions" of early cattle people who lived in dugouts and fought drouths, die-outs, heat and freeze-ups, raising the longhorns that finally brought settlement to the southwest. Here (1930) were 335 men who had been cowboys prior to 1895. Besides regular cowmen, early members included musician Paul Whiteman, editor Amon Carter, Ranger Captain Tom Hickman and Will Rogers, ex-cowhand, internationally famous entertainer and columnist. Colonel R.L. Penick was first president.
In 1932, donation of a bull started building fund for bunkhouse and roundup hall standing nearby. SMS Ranch donated site. The interior and exterior of the bunkhouse feature ranch brands of many members.
Oldtimers' Reunion and Rodeo held 3 days annually (including July 4th) features chuckwagon meals, square dancing, and oldtimers' memories and songs.
Town celebrates with cowboy parade and thousands come to see what is called "World's Largest Amateur Cowboy Show", with actual cowhands performing.
These oldtimers represent the end of the open range and beginning of the era of barbed wire. They opened Texas' last frontier.

The Lake Plain

New York, Orleans County, Gaines
The Neutral Nation of Indians, an Iroquoian group affiliated with the Eries, were early inhabitants of this area. About 1650 they were conquered by the Senecas of the Five Nations Confederacy. French explorers and traders crossed this area and English expeditions along the lake shore entered the small streams, but extensive swamps deterred settlement.
After the Revolution a few settlers came from Canada but development awaited the formation of speculative land companies. The Pulteney Purchase and that of the Holland Land Company divided the area into tracts for settlement. Inhabitants fled the area for a time after the fall of Fort Niagara in the War of 1812. Then came the building of highways, some of which ran along old Indian trails. The Ridge Road, opened in 1809, became a principal east-west route. Completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 spurred the building of towns along its route and the growth of commerce. Here early settlers built unique cobblestone houses, many of which are still standing.
Geography and climate have favored fruit culture and made packing and canning a principal industry.

Napa Milling Company demolished earlier buildings to construct this building in 1932 which was later to include the 84' tall silos constructed in 1944 and the hoppers placed in 1965. The Silo Building was home to the egg candling operation. The big doors allowed parking inside for Napa Milling trucks and equipment and accommodated a drive-through passage from Main Street through the warehouses to exit on 5th Street through metal doors in the original 5th Street brick wall. This building now hosts an art gallery, entertainment, meetings, ATM and specialty retail.
