Jamaica, Saint James, Montego Bay

The area was settled by the Taino. Columbus arrived in 1494 on the 2nd voyage, anchored in the bay and called it Golfo de Buen Tiempo or the Gulf of Good Weather. The Spanish used it to ship Manteca or Lard from the slaughtering of wild hogs. The name Montego is derived from the Bay of Lard or Manteca. The town played roles in the second Maroon War 1795-1796 and again in the 1831-1832 rebellions by the enslaved against slavery. Since the start of the 20th century it became a major international tourist destination.

War on Terrorism

The paradox of power is that a weaker nation will seek help from a stronger nation to resolve a problem, then hate the stronger nation because the weaker nation could not solve the problem themselves.

Though it was not realized at the time, America's war on terrorism began in 1983 when Marine Corps barracks in Lebanon were bombed, killing 266 and wounding 169. Other acts of terrorism occurred over the next two decades. Most notable of these were the atrocity in Somalia, the tragedy at the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, and the attack on the USS Cole. However, America was unprepared for the acts of terrorism on September 11, 2001, when hijacked airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing thousands. Amidst their shock and sorrow, Americans also found strength and unity. The Bush administration quickly began a massive investigation into the attack, and the President vowed not only to hunt down the culprits, but also to eradicate all forms of terrorism. "The battle will take time and resolve," Bush declared, "but make no mistake about it: we will win." The battle continues.

The devastating September 11, 2001, attacks on American soil rattled the nation's morale as it became clear the Al Qaeda terrorists sought nothing less than the destruction of the United States of America.

Leaders of Al Qaeda had taken refuge in landlocked Afghanistan, controlled by Islamic fundamentalists called the Taliban. When the Taliban refused to hand over leaders of Al Qaeda, the United States launched attacks against the Taliban and Al Qaeda forces, and began to provide financial aid to opposition groups in late 2001. Working with anti-Taliban insurgents, United States and allied forces killed or captured many Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters and drove the Taliban from power throughout the country. Al Qaeda leaders were able to escape into the remove snowy mountains of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region where the search continues, though many have been captured or killed. NATO Forces have been introduced into the country to assume various duties, and a President has been elected.

Born on October 30, 1930 in Wilmington, Delaware, Clifford Brown was one of the most influential jazz musicians of the mid-20th century. He began to play the trumpet as a teenager while attending Howard High School. By 1948 he was playing in Philadelphia with pioneering jazz performers such as Fats Navarro, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. It was Navarro’s influence that played a major role in the development of “Brownie” as one of the stars of the emerging “bop” style of jazz .Following a lengthy recovery from an automobile accident in June 1950, he resumed his career , making his recording debut in 1952 with Chris Powell ’ s Blue Flames. In 1953 he toured Europe with Lionel Hampton. The following year he was selected as ‘New Star of the Year’ in a poll of industry critics . His considerable talent and virtuosity resulted in recordings with Art Blakey, Art Farmer, J. J. Johnson, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, and others. In 1954 he joined with Max Roach to form the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet, considered by many to be the greatest “ha rd bop” ensemble of all time. His life ended tragically on June 26, 1956, when he was killed in an accident while traveling to perform. Clifford Brown was laid to rest in Wilmington’ s Mt .Zion Cemetery.

Delaware, New Castle County, Wilmington
This congregation was organized in 1812. For a number of years services were conducted by Methodist “circuit riders” in members’ homes and local schools. On March 7, 1834, Thomas and Hannah Aldred donated land at this location on which to build a church. Constructed of Brandywine granite, the building was completed later that year. During the latter part of the 19th century the church was extensively remodeled. Improvements included the covering of the granite exterior with a stucco finish, raising of the roof pitch, and the addition of the narthex. The facility was further renovated in the 1930s with the completion of the present stained glass windows in 1934 and the construction of the belfry in 1936. The bell that was placed in the tower had been presented to the congregation upon the dismantling of Edgemoor Methodist Church. A fellowship hall with kitchen facilities was constructed in the early 1950s. A second story was added to the structure in 1974 to meet the growing needs of the congregation. Among the noteworthy graves in the church cemetery are those of long-serving pastors Reverend John Talley and Reverend Walter E. Fosnocht.

Grubb/Worth Mansion

Delaware, New Castle County, Claymont
John Grubb, one of the original English settlers in Delaware, acquired a one-third interest in a 600 acre tract of land at this location in 1680. Several generations passed and the Grubb family greatly increased their land holdings in the area and successfully opened leather tanning and iron manufacturing businesses. In 1783 one of John Grubb’s great-grandsons, Amor Augustus Grubb, built a fieldstone home which is believed to be on the foundation of his great-grandfather’s original house from 1684. The house and land would remain in the hands of Amor Grubb’s heirs until 1913. In 1918 the house and surrounding land were bought by Edward Worth of The Worth Steel Company who would expand the house and double its size. The Worth family named the estate Ledgeworth. In 1952 the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Wilmington purchased the estate and sold it to the Holy Rosary Parish to be used as a convent for the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The Convent was closed in 1980 and the mansion was used for various activities and meetings as well as a retreat. In October 2011 the mansion was reopened after an extensive two year renovation as the Holy Rosary Parish Pastoral Center.

Hickman Row

Delaware, New Castle County, Claymont
The industrial expansion of Brandywine Hundred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was largely reflective of national trends in the growth and development of heavy industry. As large corporations moved to locations outside of major cities, some industrialists recognized the benefits of providing a living environment for workers close to factories. Through the efforts of the Worth Steel Corporation, the community of Hickman Row was constructed to serve as segregated housing for the company’s African American workforce. Many residents were part of the great exodus of African Americans who fled the South to escape racism and pursue economic opportunity. Completed in 1919, the buildings were designed as simple brick row houses facing the street with back lots large enough to raise vegetables and livestock. These amenities made the homes particularly attractive to families who had formerly farmed and raised cattle. The intimate nature of the design promoted a strong sense of community, emotionally supporting families seeking a new life and friendships in a foreign place. When the buildings were sold by the company in 1962, many African American families continued to live here and build new homes nearby. The Hickman Row Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Arden is an intentional community, founded in 1900 by social reformers Frank Stephens, a sculptor, and Will Price, and architect, to create a society based on Henry George’s Single Tax economics and William Morris’s arts and crafts philosophy. Incorporated in 1967, the village continues to be governed by these taxation and community ideals. All residential land is held in a trust. Leaseholders own their homes and pay one property tax (land rent) determined by elected assessors. Town Meetings reflect an enduring model of direct democracy. Almost half of the 162 acres is in greens, roads, paths and buffering forests. Arts and crafts continue to flourish in Arden.

The 112-acre Penn Farm is the last surviving farm of the 1,068-acre New Castle Common. William Penn, Proprietor and Governor of Pennsylvania, made his warrant in writing under his hand and seal in October 1701, granting the New Castle Common “to lye in Common for the accommodation of the Inhabitants of the Town of New Castle for their onley use and behoof forever”. The Common served as both pasture land for livestock and a source of wood for inhabitants of New Castle. It is held in trust and managed by the Trustees of the New Castle Common, a private land trust first chartered in 1764. In 1792, the Board of Trustees divided the Common into eleven tenant farms for lease. The first tenant was local businessman and Trustee, John Crow, who constructed a house upon the historic farmstead in stages between 1799 and 1828. A granary and dairy barn date to the mid-19th century. This tract of land was later named in honor of the proprietary Penn family and today is a combination of original farms No. 6 and No. 11. The Penn Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The Community of Dunleith

Delaware, New Castle County, Wilmington
The Federal Housing Act of 1949 established a goal of “a decent home and a suitable living environment for every American family.” However, a segregated housing market put this goal beyond the reach of African American veterans. In that year, Delaware Community Homes Inc. purchased a tract of land from members of the du Pont family through the Rogers Trust. The property, released specifically for the construction of Dunleith Estates in 1950-1951, was the first subdivision in suburban New Castle County to offer new housing to African American veterans. Dunleith was named after the nearby du Pont mansion. The streets in Dunleith were named for prominent African American persons or institutions. Two local churches, Coleman Memorial Methodist Church and Community Presbyterian Church were established in the neighborhood during the 1950s to serve residents’ spiritual needs. In addition, the Dunleith Community School was completed in 1957. It not only served the educational needs of local African American students in grades K thru 9, but was also the center for many recreational activities until 1970. Dunleith was a truly blended community, where families of all socio-economic levels lived, worshipped, were educated and played in harmony.

Delaware, New Castle County, New Castle
Built in 1923 with funding provided by Pierre S. duPont for schools in Delaware, this school replaced New Castle’s first school for “colored” students that was built in 1867 on Williams Street. The Delaware School Auxiliary Association provided $23,405.97 to cover the entire cost of the land and the construction of the two room brick building. Grades one through eight were instructed by two teachers. Notable faculty included Bertha Howard Battle, who taught grades one through four from 1923 until 1938, and Albion T. Unthank, who taught grades five through eight from 1926 until his death in 1953. During segregation, this school was the center of educational and social activities for the African-American residents of New Castle. Booker T. Washington School was used as an elementary school until 1958. It was used for a variety of educational programs until the early 1980s. Following a long period of vacancy, the building was acquired in 2005 by the New Castle Senior Center for community use.

In 1919 a school was established in the Buttonwood Methodist Church to serve the needs of “colored” students in the growing neighborhood. The first teacher was James Matthew Coulbourne. In 1926 a new one room school housing grades 1-8 was built here on land obtained from the Lukens Steel Company. Funding for construction was provided by P.S. DuPont and the Delaware School Auxiliary Association. Expanding enrollment resulted in the employment of a second instructor, Sylvester Woolford, in 1934. An additional classroom was added in 1938. Integration of local schools was initiated in 1955, and in 1957 the Buttonwood School was closed. The property was purchased by the Trustees of the New Castle Common in 1998, and conveyed to the Buttonwood Civic Association in 2002.

Delaware, New Castle County, Wilmington
Near this site, on October 21, 1910, the first heavier than air aircraft built in Delaware made its first flight. The aircraft, known as the Delaplane, was built by Robie Seidelinger and piloted by Eddie Bloomfield. The construction was funded by the Wilmington Aero Club at an estimated cost of nearly $6,000. Construction took place in a barn at the Gentlemen’s Driving Club, also known as Horseshow Park and, later, Wawaset Park. Originally built with two propellers, the aircraft was modified to fly with a single propeller before its first flight. The flight occurred on the last run of three high speed taxi runs when the test pilot pulled back on the controls and the aircraft became airborne for approximately 50 yards. The aircraft was later destroyed by fire while being stored in a shed at a rifle range near the town of New Castle.

Bethany College, located one block west, is a small, liberal-arts based college solidly rooted here in Lindsborg.

Established by Swedish Lutheran immigrants in 1881, Bethany is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, owned and operated by the Central States and Arkansas/Oklahoma Synods.

From the earliest days, people of Lindsborg have valued and promoted education. Bethany evolved from 11 students in the sacristy of Bethany Lutheran Church, to an academy in a modest frame building, to a full college housed in "Old Main," an imposing brick building of six stories.

Bethany College today celebrates a tradition of appreciation for learning, spiritual thought, music, the visual arts, and hard work inherited from its Swedish-American founders. The college awards the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education, and offers 50 majors and concentrations. Its primary focus is on four-year, undergraduate degree programs which prepare students for specific professions as well as in traditional liberal arts disciplines.

A member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Bethany fields teams participating in fifteen intercollegiate sports.

To the plains and mountains of America's West came not only waves of pioneers but also immigrants directly from Europe. Swedish painter Birger Sandzén (1871-1954) arrived in Lindsborg at the age of 23 on September 4, 1894, to teach at Bethany College. Plans for three years in America changed to sixty, with fifty-two of those years spent in memorable teaching. He also became regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized. Studies in Stockholm and Paris gave his paintings a vigorous brushstroke and a vibrant palette equal to the beauty and sunlight of America's landscape.

The Birger Sandzén Memorial Art Gallery is located two blocks west.

In 1908, Lindsborg presented a fertile time and place for the establishment of an English speaking Lutheran Church. Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, located two blocks west, was organized on January 15, 1909.

Following an organizational meeting, arrangements were made to hold services temporarily on the campus of Bethany College. In June, 1908, Dr. E.F. Pihlblad, President of Bethany College, accepted a call to become the first Pastor of Messiah.

The Kansas Conference of the Augustana Lutheran Church entertained a request from the church council to permit Bethany College authorities to grant sufficient ground on the college campus for the construction of Messiah's future home.

Construction of Messiah Church began in February, 1911, with dedication on Sunday, October 19, 1912. The present structure includes a Fellowship Hall addition dedicated on May 26, 1996.
