Fire Station No. 1

$

California, San Mateo County, Redwood City
The Redwood City Volunteer Fire Department started in 1861, and was the first non-profit organization in San Mateo County. It wasn’t until 1921 when this building at 1044 Middlefield Road was built that the firefighters finally received a salary.

The original old firehouse, now the center of two wing additions with its arched central openings, loggia and classical ornamental details, is one of the best examples of Italian Renaissance style buildings in the area. The tile brickwork is distinctive and reflective of Italian traditions of fine masonry. The architect adopted an Italian villa design to suit an institutional purpose. The three arched doorways of stone provided the exits for the fire trucks. Two rondels with “R.C.” and “F.D.” still exist between the arches.

When the building suffered structural damage from the 1984 Coalinga earthquake, the Fire Department moved to temporary quarters until a permanent station was built at 755 Marshall St., which was dedicated in 1987.

The former Fire Station No. 1 was remodeled and expanded to house the Redwood City Main Library in 1989.

Express, as well as a two-story hotel, boasting bar room, reading room, billiards and a bowling alley. Visitors could rent boats, horses and carriages to enjoy the scenic grandeur. A hero of the Sierra Nevada Mountains!
Probably the first skier of the West. This Viking son of Norway, exemplified the spirit of a true pioneer. Strong, daring, faithful and courageous he was the answer to California’s motto “Bring Me Men to Match My Mountains.” For 20 years he was the winter lifeline between the new State of California and the East with a regular mail schedule between Placerville, California and Genoa, Nevada and other isolated hamlets of the Mother Lode Country. Mail, news of the world, medicine, supplies, and equipment arrived on the sturdy shoulders of this giant snow Viking. Over great snowdrifts through raging winter storms with packs of up to 100 pounds, he made his appointed rounds. His daring rescues, errands of mercy and many kindnesses made him a legend in his own time. He was born John Tostensen at Tinn in Telemark, Norway April 30, 1827. He died May 15, 1876, at the age of 49. He rests at the base of the mountains he loved, by the side of his wife and son in the cemetery at Genoa, Nevada. A simple headstone, engraved with a pair of skis, marks his grave.

Sailor's Bethel Methodist Church

Delaware, Sussex County, Bethel
The roots of this congregation can be traced to 1809, when a house of worship was constructed to serve the needs of the many residents of this area who were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. First known as Elzey Moore’s Meeting House, the name of the church was formally changed to Wesley Chapel in 1825. Following the closing of Wesley in 1852, members of the congregation who resided in the vicinity of the seafaring village of Lewisville conducted services in area homes. In 1855 they constructed a church at this location on land purchased from Bayard Moore. The church became known as Sailor’s Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1880 the name of Lewisville was formally changed to Bethel, reflecting the importance of this community institution. The present church was built in 1884, and its name was subsequently abbreviated to Bethel M.E. Church. With the discontinuation of services at St. John’s Methodist Protestant Church in 1902, many of its members joined the Bethel congregation. Their former church was obtained and converted for use as the Community Hall. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. In 2004 the members of the church elected to reclaim the historical name of Sailor’s Bethel Church.

Sturctural changes on the Hotel Sere de Rivieres in the 17th and 18th centuries left intact two overhanging corner turrets, or bartixans, which are characteristic of the Renaissance. The Seré de Rivières family were made nobles in the 18th century, and their ties to Albi’s history and the pastel trade dates back to the 16th century. The most illustrious member of the family was general Raymond-Adolphe Séré de Rivières (1815-1895). His engineering of fortifications in eastern France after the defeat of 1879 earned him the sobriquet “the Vauban of the 19th century”, and general de Gaulle referred to him as instrumental in the victories at the Marne and Verdun.

[English]
Castelnau
The Old City of Albi was first known as Castelnau or “new town” in distinction to Castelviel – the original site of the city at the start of the Middle Ages. It developed during the 12th and 13th centuries between the Cathedral of Staine-Cécile to the north and the fountain of Verdusse to the south. With the approval of the city’s three ruling forces – the Count of Toulouse, the Bishop of Albi and the Vicount Trecavel – the neighbourhood grew. The regular layout of the streets shows intentional organization of space, an can be seen in the straighter and wider rue Saint-Clair and the rul de la Croix-Blanche. Today, Vieil Alby is one of the best-restored neighbourhoods in the old centre-town, featuring well preserved houses in the traditional Albi style and stunning views of the cathedral of Saint-Cécile and the Saint-Salvi collegial church [Spanish translation not transcribed.]

[English]
La Temporalité
The name of this street is a reference to the Bâtiment de la Temoralité, a civilian court (for theft, homicide, assault etc.) which represented a means for the bishop, lord of the town, to extract justice in the name of his worldly powers. This street passes by the site of the old cathedral and its cloister, and gives a view which displays the architectural similarities between Sainte-Cecile cathedral and the Palais de la Berbie.
