New Providence Church

One-half mile west is this Presbyterian church, established in Carter's Valley in 1780 by Rev. Charles Cummings and Rev. Samuel Doak. It was moved to its present location in 1815. A cemetery is at the old site.

Maxwell Academy

Maxwell Academy was established by the Presbyterian Church in 1852 and named in honor of Captain George Maxwell, who fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Serving students in grades one through twelve, the academy was operation by the New Providence Presbyterian Church until 1907. It continued operation under the Hawkins County School System until 1954.

Patterson's Mill

On the site of this mill, Robert Patterson build a fort about 1775, shortly thereafter a mill. It was one of two stations at which the settlers took refuge during the Cherokee raid under The Raven in 1776.

One mile west is the site of the store established by John Carter and William Parker. This store was pillaged in the Shawnee raid of 1774. at the Sycamore Shoals Treaty in 1775, the proprietors were awarded the whole Carter's Valley as reparation.

Rice's Mill

On the site of this mill, Henry Rice built and fortified a mill in 1775. Here, in 1776, the settlers took refuge from warring Cherokee. In April, 1777, Capt. James Robertson and eight other pioneers had a fight with 30 or 40 Cherokee near here, in which Frederick Calvatt was scalped.

Blacksmith Shop – Building 7

A Blacksmith Shop has been a feature of the West Orange laboratory complex since it was built in 1887. The first shop was located in the back of Building 4. It moved to an unknown location in 1900 and burned down in 1911. The current Blacksmith Shop, built in 1911, was enlarged to its present size by 1919.

According to a former Edison assistant, the shop was used for forging any pattern of metal needed in the Laboratory Machine Shop, especially parts for repair of the machines themselves.

Activities in the shop stopped sometime between 1927 and 1931.

The “Mormon” Ferry

First commercial ferry on the Platte River was established 1/2 mile south of here in June 1847 by “Mormon” pioneers on their way to the valley of the Great Salt Lake. Brigham Young directed nine men to remain to operate the ferry. They were Thomas Grover, Captain, John S. Higbee, Luke S. Johnson, Appleton M. Harmon, Edmund Ellsworth, Francis M. Pomeroy, William Empey, James Davenport and Benjamin F. Stewart.
The first passengers were Missourians bound for Oregon. The ferry was made of two large cottonwood canoes fastened by cross pieces and covered with slabs. It was operated with oars.

Hose Company Number 4

Built in 1884, this building became home of “Columbia Hose Company Number 4”, chartered April 2, 1894. It is the oldest surviving structure of the 7 volunteer companies organized in Eureka between 1873 and 1908. Original building had 2 rooms, combined office and sleeping apartment, the other for a hose cart. The company had 25 active members.

The Josiah Gregg Expedition

After finding Humboldt Bay from the sand dunes near Fairhaven on December 20, 1849, the Dr. Josiah Gregg exploring party reached the present site of Eureka. December 26, passing an open area near this point, to camp by an Indian village close to today’s Fort Humboldt. At the junction of Eel and Van Duzen Rivers, a dispute separated the party. Dr. Gregg and three men tried to reach civilization via the coast, but were forced to turn inland. Near Clear Lake a weakened Dr. Gregg died. L.K. Wood, leading the dissenting members of the party, reached the Mark West Ranch in Sonoma, February 17, 1850. Word of the discovery of the bay became known and a dozen ships raced north from San Francisco to locate the lost harbor. The Laura Virginia Association finally entered Humboldt Bay in April 1850, benefiting from the Gregg Expedition’s work and hardships.

Todd Mountain

Texas, Mason County, near Mason
Named for family of George W. Todd, first Mason County clerk, which was attacked by Indians at this site while en route to Mason in late Dec. 1864.
     A 12-year-old black servant girl was killed, 13-year-old Alice Todd taken captive, and Todd’s wife, Dizenia Peters Todd (b. 1826), wounded severely. Mrs. Todd died about 3 weeks later, in Jan. 1865. An older half-brother, James Smith, returned from the Civil War and searched for Alice for several months, but she was never found.
     Mrs. Todd and the servant girl were buried in unmarked graves (150 yards southeast).

Dizenia Peters Todd

Texas, Mason County, near Mason
Born in Mississippi, Dizenia Peters moved to Texas with her parents about 1835. She married William P. Smith in 1844, and had a son, James. After Smith’s death, she married George W. Todd (1827-1901) in 1851; they had 3 daughters. Todd and members of his wife’s family settled this area in the 1850s and were among the first Mason County officials. Mrs. Todd and a black servant girl were fatally wounded in an Indian attack near this site and buried in adjacent unmarked graves.
