Historic Sheridan Inn

Wyoming, Sheridan County, Sheridan
"Buffalo Bill" Cody led the Grand March celebrating the opening of the Inn in 1892 and was part-owner of this unique building for about eight years. The first telephone and electric lights in Sheridan were in the Inn.
The Inn was built by the railroad and the Sheridan Land Company. The railroad caused Sheridan to grow and prosper at the expense of other communities in the area.
Like many other visitors from the East, "Miss Kate" Arnold arrived by train. She was employed at the Inn from 1901 until 1965. Some people believe that her spirit still watches over the Inn.

The Sheridan Railway Company

Wyoming, Sheridan County, Sheridan
In early 1910, Albert Emanuel and William Sullivan of the Electric Street Railway of Dayton, Ohio, proposed to build and operated an electric streetcar system in Sheridan. The proposed line would run through Sheridan and serve as a direct line to the nearby coal camps. The City of Sheridan quickly approved the proposal and by July of 1910, rails were being laid. In just over one year's time, the City Line was completed with service beginning on August 11, 1911.
Following the tremendous success of the City Line, a second route, known as the Fort Line, was established. The Fort Line was an extension from Main Street, up Lewis Hill to the county fairgrounds, across Deadman's Draw, and on to Fort Mackenzie - the present day VA Hospital. Once at the Fort, passengers would help turn the streetcar on a turntable for the ride back to town.
The streetcar service expanded even more with the construction of a 12-mile route from Sheridan to the nearby coal camps. This Interurban route was completed in February of 1912 and made stops at Dietz, Acme, Model, Carneyville, and Monarch.
Sheridan's streetcar system has some 18 miles of track within the city, which included a short spur from the end of the City Line to the sugar factory on Coffeen Avenue. Over the years, the streetcar became the pride and joy of Sheridan and the nearby mining communities and operated with no additional changes.
After the city decided to repave downtown Main Street and not replace that stretch of double track due to decreased passenger counts, service on the City Line was discontinued in September of 1923. The Fort Line continued to operate until March of 1924 when it was replaced by a bus. That left the Interurban routes to carry on as the last remaining electric railway in the state. However, it met the same fate of abandonment in June of 1926.
Fifty years after the streetcars made their last runs, the dilapidated body of one of the cars was discovered in a field near town. As part of the Bicentennial Celebration in 1976, #115 from the Fort Line was saved and renovated by local individuals, businesses and organizations. Today, #115 is the only remaining streetcar in the state of Wyoming.
Restoration plans and preservation continue for streetcar #115 to this day including a custom made protective cover during the winter months. Donors of materials and labor are: Prill Brothers, Inc.; Kennon Products; Sign Products Co.; Bella Graphics and Display; and Garry Doerr. The project is also supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund, a program of the Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources.

(east face) Smith County C.S.A.
Major center of Confederate activity during Civil War. Many distinguished men and military units served south. The largest ordnance plant west of the Mississippi River manufactured "Tyler Rifles" near here. Camp Ford located east of town was the largest prisoner of war compound in the western Confederacy. Other military activities here included a quartermaster depot, training camps, transportation depot, foundry, general hospital and medical laboratories. Two large salt works produced daily thousands of pounds of this vital commodity. At home, women, children, old men, loyal slaves raised cotton and grain for army. Women made all their own clothes, used parched okra and yams for coffee and made hats out of shucks and straw.

Smith County as a 19th Century Legal Center

0
0
Texas, Smith County, Tyler
Soon after its establishment in 1846, Smith County became an important legal center in East Texas. The first legal proceeding to take place in the county was a district court session held in an abandoned one-room log cabin in Tyler in December 1846.

In 1850, after the State Legislature decided the Supreme Court should meet not only in Austin but throughout the state, Tyler was made one of the court's three seats. The Supreme Court began meeting here the following year. In 1851 Tyler was also made a U. S. District Court seat. It has served as such since that time, interrupted only by the Civil War when Confederate District Court was held here.

Because the Supreme Court was overworked hearing both civil and criminal appeals, the new Texas Constitution of 1876 established the Court of Criminal Appeals to relieve the Supreme Court of its criminal jurisdiction. Rotating at the same time and to the same places as the Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeals met in Tyler from its inception. Years later, state laws were passed that moved the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals permanently to Austin. The courts continued to operate in Tyler until 1891 and 1908, respectively.

Fit For A King

0
0
United Kingdom, Scotland, Perthshire, Doune

This mighty fortress was a powerful statement of the Duke of Albany's status as governor of the Scottish Kingdom.

Strong and defensible yet with luxurious accommodation, Doune was every bit the royal residence. Albany ruled on behalf of three successive kings and this impressive castle proclaimed his importance as the man who ran the kingdom.

1. Gatehouse tower: As ruler it was important for Albany to be well protected. The main entrance was heavily defended with solid wooden doors and cross-barred iron gates.

2. Great hall: The main reception room, used for hosting feasts and large gatherings. From the courtyard you can see the four-light window that illuminated the high table.

3. Duke's hall: A more intimate space where Albany entertained small parties of distinguished guests. The double fireplace is unusual and a sign of the duke's importance.

4. Upper room: With an oratory for private prayer, this may have been duchess's hall. But it could also have been the duke's private chamber, where he slept and met his closest advisers.

5. Kitchen: Food was prepared here, then passed through the hatches and taken along the service passage to the great hall, or to the duke's hall beyond.

6. Postern gate: Albany's staff probably used this door to bring goods and supplies into the castle.

Did you know...
The carved water spouts adorning the north courtyard wall would have once been painted bright, bold colours such as red, blue and gold.

The First County Agricultural Extension Agent

0
0
Texas, Smith County, Tyler

At a time of low crop production and depressed farm economy, Smith County became the birthplace of the County Agricultural Agent concept. This occurred in an historic meeting Nov. 12, 1906, in an opera house near this site. Present were Dr. Seaman A. Knapp of the United States Department of Agriculture, County Judge S. A. Lindsey, and some 44 local leaders—many belonging to the Tyler Commercial Club which sought to underwrite farm improvement.

Smith County that day appointed Wm. C. Stallings (1842-1916) the first county agent in Texas and the first in the nation to serve only one county.

Three years earlier the first cooperative farm demonstration program was begun on the Walter C. Porter property, Kaufman County. That successful application of scientific farming operations and appointment of Stallings (an outstanding farmer of the Dixie community, west of Tyler) were first steps toward establishment of the County Agricultural Agents' system, now known the world over as the Cooperative Extension Service. Today its educational programs further development of agricultural and human resources in both rural and urban areas.

Stearns Telephone

Michigan, Wayne County, Detroit
On September 22, 1877, a Bell telephone was installed on this site in the drugstore operated by Frederick Stearns. An iron wire strung along the rooftops connected the store with the Stearns laboratory a half mile away at the foot of Fifth Street. This service, only eighteen months after Alexander Graham Bell patented his invention, was the first to be offered by the organization which eventually developed into the Michigan Bell Telephone Company. A placard in the store window invited the public to drop in every hour on the hour to speak over the amazing new device. Other private lines followed, but it was a year before the first telephone exchange was constructed with fifteen or twenty subscribers on each party line.
